family vs work? How do you manage?Views: 565

I have a question in regards to how you balance work and family. I am in the beginning stages of trying to turn my hobby into an online store. I am also a SAHM, which is the most important thing to me.
How do you schedule your day? In some area's I am doing good in and then in others there is conflict.
Do you have a set time everyday that you work or try to get a few hour in everyday, when ever you can get them?
What is working for you?
What is not working for you?

Thanks for the help
Gina

During the summer I work my schedule differently than during school year but it all works around the kids' schedules..
summer, I work from 5 a.m. til they wake up (anywhere from 9-11 a.m. if I let them sleep in) then it's 'kid time'.
sometimes I have to go into the mortgage office, in which case I take my daughter, my son is old enough to stay at home now...then it's 'kid time' again, we do lunch, fun stuff, dinner then after dinner I work for few hours, then kid time again til they go asleep (usually around 11-midnight) then I go back to work on computer til around 1 a.m. then sleep til 5 and start all over...during day I do grab emails quickly and take whatever biz calls come in....

during school year....work from 5 a.m. til 6:30 a.m. when I get kids up and take them to two different schools, two different times....then home by 8, work, do the office/bank runs, go into office or work from home til 1:30 when I'm back in line at first school to get daughter, then 2:30 get son, then home by 3, and kid time til after dinner, when I have to make a few hours phone calls, then kid time/bathtime/etc....then they go to bed at 10, I work from 10 pm til 1 a.m. and then sleep til 5 a.m.

That's a 'typical' work schedule for me...cuz I have a lot of time during the day i'm doing 'kid stuff' and it pays off because my son's in honors classes and my daughters' in gifted classes and both have me when they need and they're all the better for it...it's not a 'typical' schedule for most people but it works for me and has for 11 years!

Best to you!
Tara :)

oh forgot to mention, that I'm single, so I luckily do NOT have to work a 'husbands' schedule into mine!! as you see there's minimal time for 'me' in my schedule so I'm blessed that I don't have to deal with a partner, because my time is the kids and work!
Tara :)
yes, happily happily single!!! LOL

Good question...and I don't think one that has just one answer.

I myself work my schedule around my kids. That is the very reason I run my own business versus working outside the home.

When my kids were young I "stole" work time whenever I could. Now that they're older I have more time to devote to working, but still need to be there for them.

They are a constant distraction. I unfortunately taught them that they come first ha ha ha. So whenever they need something if I'm not with a client or on the phone doing business then I stop everything and assist them.

My advice, since it sounds like you like to put your kids first as well, is to find the business time whenever you possibly can. Just like Tara does.

She may not have a lot of "me" time, but she can take the time when needed now and then. She may be working non stop from 5 am until 1 am (my goodness Tara...you are truly a superwoman...I hit the sheets at 11 and I do not get up until 7:30 am) but it will pay off for her in the end when she has a thriving business and happy, well adjusted children. Which it sounds like they are already on thier way.

You may not end up working traditional hours, but at least you are home with your kids, AND making the extra money too. I suggest writing down how many minutes here and there you do steal away for business. That way you can add them up each day and decide whether you are putting sufficient time into your business. Some days you might find you worked a ton of hours, others you might find you didn't get to much at all. Average it all out weekly, so you can see that you are accomplishing stuff.

Good luck to you. I'm sure you will get into a routine that works for you. I wish you luck. Many have done this juggling act before you with great success, and you will succeed as well. Just don't give up.

and Thanx! :)
I'm no superwoman but my kids have and always come first so I work it around them! :)
like this morning, I left son at home to wait for phone company, while my daughter and I ran to mortgage office to get check and turn in some paperwork, son called to say phone co. was almost there, so daughter and I go back home, phone jack got installed where I wanted it and now we're off to get ready for a hurricane! LOL
and I'll bounce between work calls, emails, clients and personal stuff the rest of today, then tonite work on a new clients web site and do some little things for a cake order (oh, yes I still do an occassional cake for fun via www.cakesbytara.com, that's my 'fun creative' side and both kids are working on a new biz (to be launched online soon) so today will be a day of work, personal stuff and hurricane preparations...
And YES it does pay off, my daughters' in gifted classes and my son's taking a few college classes this coming year and he's just going into 11th grade...so it works!
Peace and success,
Tara

Thanks everyone for your great advise. I think I need to work out a schedule like serious work in the mornings before my kids wake up and then after they go to sleep. This is fairly new to me, I just need to adjust. You guys are very encouraging.

I hope everything is OK with you in regards to the hurricane!
Thanks
Gina

Gina,
Kids love and need routine. This gives them a level of comfort and security because they know what to expect next. So try to create a routine not only for what YOU need to do, but also for what THEY need to do. Structure is good for them and you.
