First of all knowing yourself is important. I think often times we underestimate exactly "how" much we all do every day.

It can be a simple as re-organizing your day to be more productive. Since you all have the gift of doing many things at one time. Simply chose three things to do at the same time but finish "each" project.

If it is a project that requires your total concentration, do set the timer, do focus on that one thing. Keep it in your mind. When you need that break, take it... don't feel bad, try not to allow yourself to be frustrated.

I'm unsure if you all realize what a gift you have. I can do three to 4 things at a time, or I can focus solely on something that I really want to do whenever I want to. The key is to re-structure your days and responsibilities in a manner that creates "less" chaos in your life.

So how do you do that? Planners are a great way to do it. Recognizing your ADD/ADHD as a good thing, which it truly is.

Recognizing that you can indeed accomplish more in one day than others who don't bounce around like Tigger (which people have called me LOL)

I have 4 lists that I keep around the house.

1. Food shopping and on the bottom misc., items that I want to get during my errands. If the misc., items are something that I can get during an errand I get it. If not, then if it's not something that I need "right now" I put it on the next list. No guilt, no worries, no problem.
2. One for my business. I have a running list and one by one I take care of that list, and tick them off as I go. It gives me a really good feeling of accomplishment as I see the check marks. It also helps me, since I am forgetful, to see just how much progress I make. You can even type them out as well, so you have that running list.
3. Personal projects list. Like, painting, buying something for the house, supplies etc.,. one by one I purchase and/or get what I want and again, I check them off. I feel that in adding a label to a really cool gift that we are undermining how cool it is to be so flexible in our thinking. It "is" cool! When I'm totally focused on something I get it done. I know that when I'm busy asking myself "why" I don't get to a particular task/thing that I cause more stress within myself because I feel that I'm not doing enough! When you have these lists and you can visually see the check marks, you "know" you're accomplishing things which you should give yourself credit for.

Life is busy! Even people who do not have ADD/ADHD can forget things or lose focus. They may not talk about it as much but they go through the same things ...

4. I have another list for other misc., things that I want to get to as well. Also checked off in order of when/how I do them. I dont' focus on the fact that I "haven't" done x,y,z I focus more on the fact that I "HAVE" done this that and the other thing.

There are always going to be those days where we just don't feel like focusing on something that we may find to be less exciting or mundane. That's totally normal.

While we're at it, can we define normal? Normal is as each individual perceives it to be. My definition of course is going to be different than yours, and visa versa.

I can get more things done, in an hour than some others in a day. I'm pretty tickled by that knowledge.

So what you all have here is a gift.

Learning about yourself and your patterns and cycles of behaviors is really important to how you structure your day. Give it some thought, you'll be able to see whether or not you're more apt to focus clearly in the morning, perhaps in the afternoon, or in the evening. If you have kids around, THAT is a distraction in of itself.

Think about it! Anything any of you have put your mind to? Has been accomplished.

My two cents for today.

Sue:

This is great information! Adding to your lists, even though I have a Treo/Palm, I keep physical lists in a planner as well. They are:

Movies I want to see
Books I want to read
Household Projects
Websites I want to look at
Things I want to do
Groceries or things to pick up
...and individual tabs for key people on my team so that when I go to talk with them, I know what I want to say

I keep the planner with me all the time to write down those flashes of thought, and when I'm out, there's no need to make another list or try to remember where I'm going.

I agree. I'm going to be joining that movie place where they mail you the movies and keep a list of movies that you want to see :) I just forget.

Life gets busy! How can we expect, even if a person "does not" have ADD/ADHD to remember everything that we would like to accomplish in one day? Even a normal list of everyday activities can be overwhelming and we can forget things as others come up.

Another thing that I am going to invest in is a mini recorder. I have "the best" ideas in the car while I'm driving around with the radio on. Something I hear will trigger an idea and I'll think! That would be a great article. I have an envelope here on my desk lol with a bunch of bits and pieces of paper with all my ideas, just waiting patiently for me to turn them into something.

As I do transcription during the day for an attorney a habit that I have is to immediately type them up for fear of erasing the work or losing the tape. So, that will be a great tool to use as well.

Initially one would or may feel funny talking to themselves but it's just like anything else, once you get used to it, you simply do it.

I'm very visual ... so since I know that, and lets say I have something that I need to do? I put, lets just use the vacuum as an example. I want to vacuum, I may forget. So the instant I have that thought, I either ... vacuum right then and there or I grab it and put it in the middle of the room where I'll be annoyed by it cluttering up my environment. I'm not allowed to put it away until I've used it ... I'm the boss. :) It works!

Same thing with Vitamins. I'll do a great job taking them for a while but then as time goes on I start to forget. Way around it? I put a glass of water on the counter. Why? To annoy myself and as a reminder that I have to take the vitamins, if that shouldnt work I leave a bottle out on the counter because I like my countertops clear. It may seem like a silly thing to do but it does work.

Remember, anything you really "want" to do that intrigues you, you'll get done right? So finding those ways that intrigue you, or motivate you is very important. If one way does not work, try another. It's impressive how much we can accomplish by recognizing when we "are" the most able to focus ... and when we're simply unable to. It helps alot and it shifts day to day, month to month.

Hmmm, guess that's where go with the flow comes from aye? :)
