Ok folks, I know that we all learn new things every day... I would love to hear what tip, strategy, mindset, or tool you have tried that was successful in helping you be more organized and/or effective in your life either at home or at work!

Tell us what your challenge was and how you solved it. I can't wait to hear!

I HATE to clean house...but as a professional organizer I must keep my house presentable at all times...I never know when a potential client is going to stop by for whatever reason.

What I do is I never go into another room without looking around the room I am in currently and seeing if there is anything I can take with me that belongs in the room I am heading into.

Then I take it with me, drop it off in the correct location and do whatever I was going to do in that room. I do the same thing when I return. I look around and see if there is anything that should be in the other room I am heading back to, then take it with me.

I do this with the stairs as well. I will collect things throughout the day downstairs that belong upstairs and I will put them on one of the stairs, out of the way. Then whenever I head up the stairs I grab some of the stuff and take it with me.

I do the same thing heading downstairs.

This REALLY helps me keep cleaning time down to a bare minimum. Not to mention that my house almost always looks tidy, and I didn't even spend any time tidying up...or at least it seems that way with my system.

I immediately give Marcus the mail to be shredded. No need to leave it lying around. We also have mail slots for each of us. Once a week, I go through it, ask my son and husband what they want to keep or toss.

1. I process mail daily and I throw out/shred most of it. Then I bring what needs action up to my office IMMEDIATELY.

2. I keep a roll of paper towels under my bathroom sink and a bottle of Windex. That way, I can wipe up the sink and the mirror in a few seconds so it never really gets too gross. (makeup and hairspray make it necessary to clean it up every few days)

3. When I buy a new piece of clothing, I go through my closet and get rid of at least one old piece.

I've recently adopted a technique to get me back on top of all those little tasks we try to avoid. I spend 5 minutes on each task I need to do and then move on to the next one. If I haven't finished it within the first 5 minutes I come back to it later and spend 10 minutes on it when I've got down my tasklist.

For instance my tasklist might be emails, phone calls, letters, filing, accounts .... Using this method it's amazing how much you can achieve and how much more you get done that if you just cherry-pick your action list.

We have several checking accounts used regularly for different purposes. On all of these we almost always use our debit cards. I prefer to keep all of these receipts for at least several years even though some say only the statements are necessary.

Needless to say, piles of receipts were growing FAST. Several years ago I finally bought a little accordion folder used for cancelled checks for each account. Each account has it's own folder and all receipts are immediately filed by month as soon as the transaction is entered into my Quicken file.

At the end of the year, this folder is filed away with my tax returns.

Large Zip-Lock Bags,

Not the really large - but the 2 gallon size. And the 1 gallon sizes with the slider. Then add some of the smaller ones.

I dump a lot of stuff in the 1 or 2 gallon sizes for quick clean up. OK, maybe it's an extra step, but in the plastic bags it has much less chance of spilling or getting spilled on.

Then I'll take a bag and sort it into smaller bags. If I have to stop, it's all still in bags and I just zip it up and put it away until later.
