The fear of having an email address harvested | Views: 614 |

Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | Is the popularity of Hotmail addresses due to the problem of harvested email addresses? I have been getting a lot of SPAM lately. For example, I have gotten a lot of Ebay messages that my Ebay account is in trouble. Well, that is amazing to me. Why? Because I have never had an Ebay account. Is there a lot of harvesting happening here on Ryze. I wonder if my activity here is contributing to this problem.
Any insight out there?

Chris Young | | Popularity of multiple email adresses is indeed due in part to spam.
Personally, I have more than 10 email adresses that I use in an effort to reduce spam to my main account.
Of the free webmail services the best I've found is Gmail.
Gmail has a number of filtering and syndication features that work well to improve my information flow.
Cheers,
Chris

Garland Coulson | | Hi Lamar,
Here are a few ways to stop your email address from being harvested and reduce spam.
1. Use a form for people to contact you on your site instead of listing your email address. This stops the harvesting.
2. Use a good quality spam filter. I use the email client Thunderbird which has a decent one built in. It greatly reduces spam and it learns my preferneces.
Most Ryze activity won't contribute because you choose whether to make your email address available to each Ryze member.

Wendy McClelland | | One other tip is to create a graphic on your site, that is hyperlinked to your email address. This way people have to "click on the graphic" to use the email function.

Jonathan Clayman | | My web hosting company provided me with a free tool which encrypts email addresses which has been very useful for my site.
