The Bangalore Movie Club Update- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)Views: 5801
Nov 29, 2005 8:24 amThe Bangalore Movie Club Update- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)#

Avinash Mudaliar
The Bangalore Movie Club had its first outing at the INOX with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

With the Bangalore Movie Club's adrenalin pumping credo of Ideate, Formulate & Act, I think Pradeep did a better job of organising the tickets than Mike Newell did of the entire movie.

We, came, we met and we ate... then chilled and chatted , discussed this film and others at the Cafe Coffee Day. Aditya, Sudheendra, Pradeep and me were the last of the Mohicans...

Kudos to all who turned up. Sandhya, hope you are doing well now.

Few notes:

Firstly

Harry Potter was now Hairy Potter

With all the Brit critics going gaga over this goblet. It just made me shut my gob and think. This flick was definitely a thinking man's flick. Made us think why we chose it.

In his fourth year at Hogwarts, a time when Nazi-like "Death Eaters" are on the march, Harry is forced to fight gladiator-style in a deadly intramural competition, the Triwizard Tournament. A dragon breathes fire down his neck while a dragon of a different sort - the evil, presumably vanquished Lord Voldemort - makes Harry's lightning-shaped scar pulse with foreboding.

Millions of blistering broomsticks coupled with some Indian curry at the ball, where Harry didn't dance at all, kind of sums it all up. Krum was cool.

They've gone ahead and done a double Lagaan on this one. Alfonso Cuarón was better, me thinks. He brought a clear depth in to the series

Dark...Light...Dark... And then was Light again...this seemed to be the tone of this flick.

A"Mazing" sfx + Triwizard Tournament + Love and Bhai chaara +a wee bit of jealousy combined with darkness and death + Mad-Eye Moody+ Potter + Hotter Hermoine + Measly Weasley+more SFX + Brit director +a laborious, exposition-filled confrontation with a key supporting character who’s revealed to be a different, more sinister person than initially suspected + Ralph Fiennes - nose makes this magic potion.

One scene I liked though was the ghastly ghostly soap sudded opera scene which has Hairy without his basics in " hot " bath with Moaning Myrtle! Using soap sud as protection was quite a masterpiece. Basically Newell's tried to make it as PG 13 as it can get with Ms.Granger getting Freudian with “we didn’t really talk at all. Viktor’s more of a physical being.” Ooh!

I got home and checked out Donnie Brasco again... Mike Newell, should just stick to weddings and crime. that's where he works best.Despite some box office wizardry to the tune of $2.7 billion and counting, the Harry Potter films are still, so far, no masterpiece for those who haven’t read the books.

Rita Skeeter is hot is a very "not" kinda way. You guys know, what I mean

As the wise headmaster Dumbledore says, life is "a choice between what is right and what is easy." We chose a flick that would be easy, I guess it wasn't just right!

That's all folks...

News of next screening soon. We are trying to find out what are the good movies coming up. Suggestions welcome...

Coming Soon : A review of the awesome loo at INOX. It's a Master Pee (ce)

Built for world pees!

Well, there was much more excitement outside the movie hall than inside it, atleast for me !!!! Did some spotting outside the hall, LOL. Infact spotted Arathi, an yesteryear actress who was, one of the best actress Sandalwood(thts the nick name for the kannada movie industry) had. She was there with her kids and hubby to watch a movie(I dont know which one, but I ddnt c her at Harry Potter movie). In true David Livingstone style went upto her and asked "Nivu Arathi allava" ??? (arent you Arathi"). She smiled , nodded her head , looked at Pradeep, Divya Punj, standing a bit behind me and mischieviously asked "Anthu friends hathra bet gedhri thane !!!"(so you won the bet with your friends). And she even posed for a pic with me LOL, pic courtesy Divya Punj ;)).

Well waitin for the next movie, dont know who I will spot then LOL :))

guess i share avinash's thoughts to a large extent ... HP&GOF grossly hyped considering how much happens in the buk ,newell has failed to give emphasis to the events that matter like the Triwizards Cup ... Voldemort after all the aura built arnd him is rather unsatisfactorily played by Ralph Fiennes n leaves the audience asking for more ... i seriously fail to r'ber any well shot or directed scene in the movie except the cinematographically blessed Quidditch stadium shot in the beginning ... all in all a huge disappointment esp after Azkaban n Cuaron ...

Nice to know that you guys had good time, too bad i couldn't make it.

Will you consider organizing these type of outings on Sundays in future? Atleast alternate between Saturdays and Sundays.

HI All,

Thks for the concern....I liked only the part 1 & 3...other parts i didnt liked very much....specially this part (Goblet of Fire) i didnt like...There was not much competition between the Harry potter & Dragen and also the movie was not much entertaining...

Well folks before being critical about the movie, lets look at some facts

- The books are getting fatter
- A director needs to finish the movie in 2 hrs, if he were given 4 hours for this movie, I am sure he would have done an awesome job. Maybe we should hand the 5th movie to Yashraj films, the masters of long chewing gum movies like Mohabattein
- Which movie has ever been better then the book. I can hardly recall any movie that has been better then the book

We need to except that the movie just scratched the surface and too much of emphasis was laid on the tri-wizard. Finer aspects of the World cup and the death eaters is totally missing

I must admit that I missed a good game of quidditch in this movie, maybe the director should have considered a game in this movie

The new dumbeldore does not quite go with his character. The actor who featured in movies 1&2 was good but unfortunately is no more. Dumbledore is calm, compassionate person and the new dumbledore appears more brash and arrogant in his ways

All in all a good attempt

We had an amazing time at INOX.

My son, Ashwin, had a disappointing day in College and came home in sore mood at 5.45pm on Nov 26. I called up Avinash and Pradeep to get the last two tickets to Harry Potter movie, landed in INOX, Gaurda mall at 6.45pm and made Ashwin's day. Thanks Avinash, Pradeep.

Movie comments:

* The visualisation of the movie is amazing. Ofcourse, it helps if you have read the book to follow the story.

* More scenes of the World Quiddich championship would have been welcome at the start of the movie

* Harry Potter fighting the dragon has been visualised in a amazing manner

* Felt the movie was too short or had very less scenarios compared to the book.

Nice to see the enthu for the movie club. Harry Potter was our first outing followed by Rang De Basanti. The RDB outing had a mega turnout of nearly 50+. All due to the efforts of Pradeep Mehta.

We hope to announce a outing very soon. Watch out the board, for more details.

The Day of the Jackal was the only movie until recently that was closest rendering of the book.

Do u think Da Vinci Code also was true to the book?

The first line was from somebodys mail-so you agree with me?
Ken Follets 'eye of the needle'and of course BBC's production of Shakespeare and my all time favourite"Pride and Prejudice'with Collin Firth
Da Vinci -I thought was good too -considering it is a thin line they had to walk on
I esp liked London and Paris shots and of course when he reminded her of her lineage towards the end and she tried walking on water!!

Oh Avatar is going to be released in Bangalore? I didn't think the 'plexes would invest in the 3D technology--I see 8 theatres will be--cool! This is going to be a real treat for stereoscopy buffs like me.
