I am very happy you are coming forward enthusiastically. There are a few others also, who are eager now to meet. But I would like to ensure that we have at least 10 people this time, - I mean 10 hardcore volunteers - who can get down to work and NOT just meet. Taking the drop-down ratio as 10:1 (app.), we have to make 100 people confirm their participation in any out-of-the-net activity. I would confidently say that WCFC is really having a good number of virtual members, as this network itself connects people only virtually.
The comfort of making a posting in the net, in a jiffy, and getting on with other mundane tasks, is the boon and the bane of the net. We have an uphill task in converting the virtual comfort/anger/service-attitude to real life.
I have met a few wonderful people in WCFC. Some of them are quiet young and going through the calls of life, like marriage or migration to other cities due to transfer or job change, etc. I hope that they would get back and join hands to continue what they wanted to do thru' this network. We also have a few people, who fall in my age group (50s'), showing an infectious enthusiasm all the time. They also have to be reached back again.
To my knowledge, at least in Chennai, there is NOT even a single group that got formed virtually, (in the net) which is able to engage itself in community tasks with a dogged pursuit. The net is yet to strike the imagination of the common man, when it comes to translating ideas into practice in the service front, while it does a wonderful job connecting people on activities that can trigger the humour segment of the brain, call it leisure or pleasure time activities.
The challenge before WCFC is to disprove what I have described above. It is a very tough task, but as I had mentioned in one of the threads earlier, I am trying to stay floating in Ryze and spot out the ones whose sense of righteous anger doesn't get born and die on the net.

I think u r right.. But it's only a matter of ignition, I mean to say the REAL activity, as once it's ignited soon many would follow I suppose.. Is there any other such network group in India or across the World which is doing some Real activity.. Govind Srinivasan | | I assure you all that I am NOT trying to avoid a meeting. After all, I have been a common denominator here and cannot afford to spend my time in this network, with no objective. I certainly have my limitations too.
The very reason why I took the paid membership (Gold membership) is to start this network - WCFC. But, then, many a time, the one who starts any public activity may find the churning happening all the time. Being a common denominator is like being a Bus Stop. People come to a Bus Stop with the clear idea to catch a bus and go where there want to. The Bus Stop remains there. Think of this; I am managing the WCFC Bus Stop since September 2004! I have been witnessing a lot of debating here, in which I have also been participating. But the coversion rate from imagination to fruition is abysmal so far.
At the cost of repetition, let me say it once again -- which you all know, of course. The internet is a very powerful medium that gives a tremendous leverage to anybody to say anything and even commit anything. Translating virtual commitments, fellow-feeling, empathy, satisfaction, etc. to real time is a herculean job.
Internet is very young and obviously promotes a lot of youngish activities; quite understandable; it is required. Promoting PUREPLAY FUN through net is easier, much easier than promoting awareness, physical participation in agreed actions and more importantly ensuring continuity. The psychology of curiosity makes people ask questions or give suggestions on the fly in the net. To make a fusion of minds in FUN-oriented meets is lot easier than expecting people live up to their promises in service-oriented tasks. Thus, empathy in common cause remains ephemeral in the net. The challenge now before us is to disprove this. We have NOT been successful in the past, but we should continue to be optimistic, which is what life is all about.
This is a private network run by me and I am keen to make it a public network. I am still on the look out for a few, who can co-build WCFC and not just participate, while we always require a lot number of participants. Believe me, co-building WCFC can be exacting and exhausting; nevertheless enjoyable to those who strongly feel that they are the CHANGE-AGENTS. You should be able to dedicate a few evenings and week-ends for this co-building work. There is a lot of work for others too, who cannot give out their week-ends and week-evenings. But let's construct the platform first.
