Private Reply to Jiten Gajaria | Dec 14, 2005 8:09 am | | re: XXX | # | Onkar Singh Plaha | | I don't know for sure but this is what I have been given to believe:
In olden days when Rum was prepaired and sent to far away lands by ship, it was transported in wooden drums. When the ship would return with some unsold drums, the stock used to be replenished with newly filled drums. The drums that had returned (old stock, so to say) were marked with a single "X". If any of them came back again, that(or those) was marked with another "X", and then with another for the next voyage. In those days one return journey of a ship would usually take a few months,if not years. So the number of "X' markings would tell, in a way' the age of the Rum.
Two things are not known to me. One,whether they considered the Rum to become better with inceasing numbers of"X", or the other way round ? Two, Why then there was no such thing as "XXXX" Rum. I am inclined to think that they thought that after three returns the Rum was rendered useless and therefore, they may be throwing it into the sea or leave it behind to be consumed by the slaves (or may be the officers), depending upon how stupid or wise they were.
Anyway, not to worry. We are quite alright with XXX.

I tried to do a Chandrashekhar Bhosle and find out through google. But no luck. Onkar's theory sounds interesting - very likely to be correct Naren Private Reply to Narendra Kusnur | Dec 14, 2005 11:49 am | | XXX | # | Chandrashekhar | | Well,
1.) With a casual glance at google this seems to be a mostly Indian tradition.
2.) Rum does NOT get better after a particular (variable) age unlike some other liquor.
3.) Ageing would require more then the time it takes to transfer it across in a ship.Private Reply to Chandrashekhar | Dec 14, 2005 12:28 pm | | re: XXX | # | Onkar Singh Plaha | | Dear Mr. Bhosle,
One "X" is not for the time required to transfer the barrel(drum). It is the time this particular drum spent on the ship during it's one voyage. I am sorry if I was not clear the first time. In any case this theory is only a theory.I do not know for sure.
Cheers. Onkar. Therefore XXX is indicative of triple distilled. Casking the alcohal is called maturing or aging, and adds the flavour of the wood cask oil to the brew. It also allows the alcohal to form longer molecules (chains) which are indicative of smoothness. The longer the chain, slower is its breaking down. Well so much for the gyaaan...Private Reply to Akkshai Malhotra | Dec 25, 2005 8:25 am | | re: re: re: re: XXX | # | Srini vasan | | Hooo Malhotra Saab, wat a fantastic explanation.
