Quite often when I know there's a writing project, construction project, website or any other task to deal with, I set the work aside, close my eyes, and start thinking about the more creative side of each task.
This can add hours of additional work to a day, in which I’d otherwise given up and gone fishing.
Thinking about deadlines is the worst thing you can do. I know my clients hate to hear this, but to me, a deadline is just an indication of how late the work is going to be -- or how much earlier than they expect it’s going to be, but I can’t allow it to drive me.
I can’t allow it to push me into decisions that are going to hurt the copy and hurt the project at hand.
Think about deadlines, and you’re going to find that your project suffers!
I've learned this the hard way, and now I focus on writing the best copy, developing contracts etc., that I can now visualize deadlines with a "hot new control," and have gained a lot more winners.

When writing a newspaper article, I usually have a clock ticking in the back of my head. I'm always aware of time, and when it's up, I end the paragraph, give the story a quick read and send it.
You're right that awareness of deadlines can sometimes hurt the work, but I've found that I actually write better under deadline.

It's always gratifying to know that someone has similar experiences, especially when we are so far away.
As for deadlines, I have a hard time working too far ahead. I have a story coming up on former gymnasts Bart Conner and Nadia Comaneci, and I've frittered away a week in procrastination. The deadline's closer, and now I can work.

I find that when I get down to the wire my adrenaline gets going and my creative juices flair. When I have alot of time, I put things off until the deadline nears unless I have to send progress reports.
