Hi all,

What the best way to advertise a website, that doesn't cost and arm and a leg?

First, it depends on your definition of an arm and a leg. $100? $1000? 10000?

Hi Cindy,

It's hard to say THE best way for you to advertise since I don't know just who you're trying to reach, but I'd recommend looking into either Google's Adwords or one of Yahoo's advertising programs.

With them you can be very specific as to who views your ads and you typically only pay for the people that click through to your website.

Depending on the just who you want to reach, you might also want to find websites that cater to this same audience and see if they have advertising opportunities available on their website or in a ezine they publish.

Cheers,

Steve

I had a copy of Guerrilla Marketing in 30 Days sent my way, looked through it and it appears to be mostly common sense type stuff for marketing your business.

But the problem with most small business owners marketing their business isn't a common sense issue. It's an action issue. Consistent action.

It doesn't much matter how many times Jay or you or I tell people what needs to be done. They need to do it. Consistently. And they don't.

For advertising on the Internet at a very very reasonable cost I would recommend Michelle's Advertising - her RYZE page is here:

http://www.ryze.com/view.php?who=Michelle1963

and her Advertising Services are presented here:

http://www.michellesadvertisingservice.org/

and her advertising has prompted the people who had previously given me an Image Gallery on a Web Site originating in China to pick up her copy on their own when they themselves saw the advertisements that she had posted throughout the Internet:

http://www.e9e9.com/show/walter.htm

I honestly am still in awe of the type of exposure that her ads have gotten me both at the time of the first placement of her ads and also months and years later!

thank you!

Hi Cindy,

I'm not sure you've been by lately to check out the advice you are getting here. Some really great stuff.

It seems to me you have the PERFECT way to market your site and product already. You ARE a writer. So do what you do best. Write!

Write about how you got started, what you write, why you write it, why you choose to offer your books via membership. Heck write a few short stories about the characters to get people interested in reading more.

There are hundreds of article directories online that would love to publish your articles and give you links back to your site. Mine included.

If you need help finding the right directories to submit to, contact me and I'll get you a list of places I recommend you start.

Whatever you decide to do, just do it. And start right NOW!

Good luck,

Hi Cindy,

I would say that you should first consider what you want to accomplish with your advertising. Online advertising is not always the most cost effective when it comes down to cost per lead and cost per sale.

I often write articles on improving the effectivenss of your advertising and minimizing the cost. Copies of all articles can be found at http://www.secondmelody.com/apps/toolsinfo/login.php

Look forward to hearing from you.

Depends what kind of website, there are alot of yellow page type sites that let you add your business free. I also know Verizon(superpages) is offering a free website (bad looking, but free, it could be your secondary site), and $25 free ad credit, so thats good, and that includes your directory listing.

I recently read an article regarding book sales targeted to their authors which stated: "Book sales are best when the author personally promotes their product."

Having done a website for an author of children's books, I can say this is true.
While her site is well optimized for SEO and the call to action is strong, sales are poor unless she is personally promoting it.

Promotion means you have to participate in forums and discussions revolving around your topic.

Here are just a couple of ways I think are quite effective you can use to advertise without costing an arm or leg. Mainly online.

1. Participate in forums and leave your url signature

2. Write articles and publish it on your blogs, websites and directories, while leaving a link to your website.

3. Create a some free stuff and give it away, while having a link back to your site.

4. Simply tell people about your site, and ask them to tell their friends. (Viral)

5. Create a useful resource where people might want to come by and have a look at.

6. Make some funny videos with a linkback to your site.

7. Link exchanging with other non competing sites, etc.

There are many other ways actually, mostly free ways that won't cost you, but there are also paid ways to advertise (PPC Campaings, Banner Ads, etc.).

I have a couple of resources that I can share with you on online marketing that can help you drive more traffic to your site. If you're interested just let me know.
Hope this helps.

Cheers.

I think the Best way to Advertise your Website is through some Business Cards that you can make yourself. Just include your URL. It's that Simple.

Also you can Subumit your Websites to Search Engines for Free. A Lot of People don't do this. But I do. It May or May Not get Listed. But It's worth the Try. and it gives your Website huge Exposure. I've been doing it for Months and Months. and it does pay off if you keep at It.

I don't Believe in Spending a Fortune just to Promote a Website. We have to Use some Common Sense.

Also as SomeOne Had Mentioned. Forums are an excellent way of Promoting your Website.

Yahoo Groups are Excellent!

Wow, there's loads of good information here already, and I'll have to check back again and look into some of these ideas.

I just added a plug board to my site if anyone should want to add their "plug" that links to their site as a way of advertising...it's at http://happynutritionist.com on the first page.

I also have a game going at http://workathomegrandmoms.com We had a winner for our first game yesterday, and another is just getting underway. I offer to purchase a gift for the winner up to $40 from any of the advertisers on the game. The first round lasted only a couple weeks, the second may take a little longer. Stop by and see.

Dean H.

Hi all. It's been awhile since I've checked in.

Here's the problem with the initial question about what's the best way to advertise.

The initial poster didn't explain who she is targeting and what her business and marketing plan consists of. By asking such a vague question like this, you end up getting all sorts of answers that aren't *relevant* to the needs of the owner. In doing so, she is forced to try and figure out which answers and their methods are best for her. It almost becomes futile because if she doesn't have a marketing plan to begin with, then it becomes the blind leading the blind. Make sense?

What we should have initially done is ask Audrey who she is targeting and what her current marketing mix consists of. Before we can offer a solution, we have to do an initial situational analysis. It's the basics of solution selling-- only offer a solution once you know the entire situation.

Questions that Audrey needs to ask are;

Who is my target market?
What is my current marketing mix consists of?
Of that mix, what's working. What's not working?
What does my SWOT analysis look like?

Hopefully, you get the point.

While I think there were some great answers given, I think the real lesson learned here is that most small business owners haven't a clue as to the basics of a marketing strategy. That's not meant to be condescending in any way, but it really is a reality that most of us need to understand.

As a web designer who works with independent service professionals and SBOs on varying levels, I can tell that most SBOs would rather get their tooth pulled out than focus on creating a sustainable marketing plan. In fact, all the periodicals that I've read on small business says the same thing- sales & marketing is last on the to-do lists of most SBOs. I believe Denise may be able to confirm that observation.

According to the SBA, more than 90% of service related businesses [of which most of us are], fail within 5 years. There are many reasons for this, but the primary reason isn't because we don't offer a great service or product. The primary reason is because the owners haven't mapped out a solid marketing and sales strategy and a system to go with it. I emphasize system because as business owners, we need to systemize our business as much as possible. Without having a system in place, we find ourselves spread too thin and going in all different directions. Does this sound familiar to anyone? :)

I strongly suggest talking to professionals who can help map out a proper strategy and plan for you. Denise comes to mind. There is also a colleague of mine on Ryze, Dave Orsborn, who specializes in writing up business plans for people. He runs The Networker's Network and his work has been referenced in the works of Seth Godin.

There are tons of other resources out there on this stuff. Feel free to drop me an email if you need further info on this stuff. Not selling anything as this is not my area of expertise.

Laters.

Keeping a Blog is an increasingly popular way to bring in click thrus to your site.

As well as using the links on the Blog itself, they also do a great deal to speed things up on the search engines, getting your site re/listed much quicker than the usual months of waiting.

Ron Amundson

However, I am targeting Men and Women who love to read fantasy books in created worlds. Between the ages of 18 to 45, who have internet access.

Aha, now, that we know the target, its time to ask questions....

Are these people going to search for fantasy books, read banner ads, read text ads?
The younger demographic may not, but the older ones might. As a result, using such methods may miss half your audience. For insight, pick a couple hundred myspace, facebook, or friendster users under 25, and ask them what the last banner ad was.... no one will be able to tell you! Heck, even ask an experienced ryzer what the last text ads at the top were... Such advertising is based upon a very tiny conversion ratio, and a huge mass of exposure. Its not very targeted.

Will these people hang out in like minded communities?
Probably so, within narrower demographics, and this may be a good target... only if handled appropriately. An author friend picked up a substantial readership, off of a Bruce Willis fan site. Needless to say, he did not spam or self promote on the site.

Beyong reading, what are their interests?
RPG and MMORPG come to mind, as a subset

What are their blog interests?
eg, their is no point using trackbacks, and blogging on subject areas where they are unlikely to subscribe or read in passing. The exception being that you want to rely on search engines, rather than wom. Considering that google has 19,500,000 results on fantasy books, and close to that on sci fi books and related terms, its going to be difficult, although not impossible to use search engines alone to bring you readers. Ref http://labs.google.com/suggest

Can I find any joint venture possibilities?
I'd say the sky is the limit in this regard. Take a look at some SEO tools, not necessarily for the purpose of linking, or worse counterproductive link farms, but for like minded communities, where a jv may be possible, or for other insite. Related Link Suggestion Tool is a decent one.

Hopefully this gives you some ideas

Ron
