Mine is very limited. Thanks, Kristi Sayles http://smartauthor.comPrivate Reply to Kristi Sayles | Feb 21, 2006 10:53 pm | | re: What do you think about Tagging? | # | Denise O'Berry | | Kristi --
Thanks for your post. Are you referring to tagging as in technorati tagging on blog posts?
Please clarify.

The site is so unprofessional I would run, not walk as fast as I can away from it. It was registered for the first time on 1/15/06 so it is very young. I couldn't even stay and read it I found it so offensive to my eyes. It does seem to have something to do with blog tagging, but I'm not sure and a search on it pulls up another duplicate site with the same exact page and a different domain.
Stay away in my opinion.
Best regards,

Thanks, KristiPrivate Reply to Kristi Sayles | Feb 22, 2006 3:43 am | | re: re: re: re: What do you think about Tagging? | # | Ron Amundson | | I too found it rather odd...
Probably the biggest issue I have beyond the graphical presentation is I see no way that value is created. The money has to come from somewhere, and I just could not see a reason why someone would pay for advertising on the site.
Now, it may well be that they are trying to build a subscriber base, and with concurrent efforts they will create something of value, and have the subscriber stats to back it up, and thus provide revenue. Being such a new site, its impossible to tell.
I would guess, they are probably fighting the cart and horse scenario. Eg, no one will advertise until their are subscribers, and subscribers will not sign up without a carrot... and thus the difficulty of being clear cut in this matter.
Now, I did pull the bookmarks from digg (which is one of the sites referenced in tagexplosion). http://digg.com/links/TAG_You_re_it,_you_will_get_RICH,_playing_this_game and it got killed on digg within minutes of posting. That was on the 19th of January. It appears they registered it on the 15th, and then submitted it to digg shortly after DNS propagation. That shows a serious lack of planning and diligence. In fairness yet again, it is possible an overzealous marketing guy who was way outside his element might have done this, especially since such said person has no other diggs. Talk about shooting a new venture in the foot....
All is not totally lost though. The concept of tag sharing and a search protocol related to tag popularity may actually be a good idea, perhaps even a great one. The key is how to build a business strategy around it.

Social bookmarking is an increasingly popular way to locate, classify, rank, and share Internet resources through the use of shared lists of user-created Internet bookmark lists, the practice of tagging, and meta-data inferred the use of such tags and their relation to one another.
In such a system, users store lists of personally interesting internet resources, and (usually) make these lists publically accessible. They also classify their resources by the use of informally assigned, user-defined keywords or tags (see folksonomy). Most social bookmarking services allow users to search for bookmarks which are associated with given "tags", and rank the resouces by the number of users which have bookmarked them. Many social bookmarking services also have implemented algorithms to draw "meta-data" inferences from the tag keywords that are assigned to resources by examining the "clustering" of particular keywords, and the relation of keywords to one another.
Such a system has several advantages over traditional automated resource location and classification software, such as search engine spiders. All tag-based classification of Internet resources (such as web sites) is done by human beings, who understand the content of the resource, as opposed to software which algorithmically attempts to determine the meaning of a resource. Additionally, as people bookmark resources that they find useful, resources that are of more use are bookmarked by more users. Thus, such a system will "rank" a resource based on its perceived utility. This is a more useful metric for end users than other systems which rank resources based on the number of external links pointing to it.
I did not know anything about this, but searched and fouind some info. Check more on Tagging and Social Bookmarking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking

I have two blogs and have tagged some of the posts on Technorati and del.icio.us. They've started showing in Google search results, so I think it's worth it.
I also signed up for Tagexplosion, but can't see how it's any use. If I could find an unsubscribe link on that busy page I would.

In Nov they got funded to the tune of $2.8 million.
For a 1 year old site created by a couple guys, they are obviously doing something pretty amazing in their business plan. I've got some ideas, but any insite as to why this is so hot, is appreciated.
