Hi,
I am sure everyone will agree particularly those who live and been to kolkata, it is indeed one the best place for food lovers. There are foods which will suit all budgets and all ages.
From roadside rolls, a much better version of francos in bombay to proper chinese dishes in chinatown. I will post another post with some of the dishes, they are mouth watering .. Every city in India has a unique style, in Kolkata there is a mixture of mughlai food, lucknow style biriyani bengali style cooking and authentic bengali+chinese cuisine.

Cheers
Jaydeep

Maharaja's mutton rolls are my favourite. Don't know if the place is still around in New Market?

Hi Jaydeep,
thanks for all the places you have recommended. My sphere in Calcutta is mainly south calcutta, Dhakuria uptill new market (northern point!)

So tell me about the places roughly in this area.
Just came back from Mocambo...its as great as I remember!!
baked crab, drunken prawns, cream of mushroom soup, fish steaks, chk chipolata....and no place for dessert!! That's what we had.

So far I have one invite to a relatives place for crab jhol..., lots of food that Mom's cooking, and a few restaurants on the list!

For authentic Bengali cuisine, do try Oh! Calcutta. It's at the Forum mall on Elgin rd. Even for those who do have Bengali food at home, this is a great place for those tricky dishes that are difficult to make at home. You could also try 6, Ballygunge Place -- it's a bit cheaper. And that is the address as well as the name of the restaurant.

I had great Indian food at Lazeez, near Elgin Road and Chowringhee crossing. There's a new restaurant called Tamarind, I think it's on camac street, that serves great south Indian non veg, like Mangalorean and other coastal cuisine. You could try fusion cuisine at KK's Fusion near Swabhumi (it's at 89 Cinemas I think).

Heya ..

Oh Calcutta and Mainland China are in BBY too .. so guess Rhea wont want to waste time on those ..
Try the rest .. they are worth it .. Amber is a Must ! !

Tamarind is on Sarat Bose Road (close to Motor vehicles)... 10 mins drive from Marco Polo .....

Tangerine is on Outram st/rd... food is continental .. quite good ..

And if u want chaaaats - try Russell St and one more joint adjacent to Kookie Jar on Rawdon St ...

Rhea,
Try 6, Ballygunge Place. Oh well, it is at 6, Ballygunge Place! :)

Supposed to be very good authentic Bangali food, though I haven't tried it.

Hi Basabda,
Good to hear from you :)
Its been a while.
Since a lot of people are recommending the Chello kebab at PC, will definitely go there too.

What about some Chinese places? Apart from BarBQ...

Rhea,

Peiping on Park street is an old favourite, but can't say how good or bad it is these days. There is a new restaurant on free school street just off Park street, diagonally opposite where Golden Dragon used to be, the name escapes me, but the food is good. Mainland China is good too, and so is Mandarin in Park Hotel, take your pick. :)

Jaydeep,
Haven't been to B H Manna yet this trip, so will let you know as soon as that happens.
Meanwhile today the menus at lunch and dinner (both at home)consisted of Musur daal, Bhaat, begun bhaja, dharosh bhaja, rui machher jhol...at lunch. mangshor, jhol, golda chingri malai curry (cooked like the fish recipe in the Fish Book thread), pabda machher patla jhol, bhat, aamer chatni finished with pantuas...for dinner.
I'm definitely going back to bombay a few kilos more prosperous :P
I think I'll be on bread and water when I get back!!!
on second thoughts...naaaaaah!!!

A big THANK YOU to all of you guys who recommended Marco Polo...Superb. Just superb...the food, the service, the ambience, everything. A bit expensive as per Calcutta standards, but fabulous food, worth every paise spent.
we had a fish preparation, Bekti or Bhetki, it was flavoursome and a bit spicy, a mutton preparation, cooked in almond sauce, and the most divine Lachchha parathas.
Lovely food, on the table within 10 mins, courteous and very prompt service, a lovely experience. The dishes had very fancy names so I apologise for not mentioning exactly what we ate.
3 ppl, lunch and coffee (which was not so great), altogether cost RS. 821 Incl taxes.
Worth it.

Hi All
Nice to hear that you liked Marco Polo.

I firmly believe other than bengali cuisine ,you must taste muglai food which is best available in Calcutta.

Few more thoughts

1.Oh Calcutta-I ate in Mumbai. It is simply awesome.Must try bhetki jhol made with kalo jeera.Daab chingri and kosha mangsho.

2.6 Ballygunge place-Average.I tasted in Bangalore. Its multicuisine menu is a big drawback. Also I felt the rates are overpriced.

3.Bedwin-My all time favourite for kati rolls in Gariahat circle(Now below the flyover)

4.Baan Thai(Oberoi)-The BEST THAI FOOD in INDIA,I can vouch.

5.Royal(Chitpur)-You might feel that it is little shabby. But the biryani's and kababs are divine.A foodie's delight.

Kewpies is as absolute must do - (Bhapa Ilish, daab chingri in coconut shell). I found Aheli disappointing. Suruchi had a great baigun-kheema cutlet.
MAke sure you get the Nolen gurer (kodoppa) from Bhim Chandra Nag at the junction of College street and bow bazaar, if memory serves me right. Both gangurams and balram mullick didn't measure up.

Hi Vineet,
thanks for the sweet tips, but I don't eat them at all :( don't like them.
Have been to Kewpie's earlier, the food is fab!!
Am looking forward to the small samosas, typical of Kolkatta, with unpeeled potatoes in the filling.

went shopping too...picked up about 5-6 different varieties of jams and preserves. Brand name- Bhuira. Peach jam, cinnamon and apple jelly, plum jam, that sort of stuff. Awesome stuff. Hubby loves them.
Also picked up a whole lot of masalas. all local brands. and found potato flour. I didn't know that an Indian Co. has started making the stuff.
Shall try it out at home

For some very Indian stuff, one can try Flavors of India.
Its on AJC Bose, diagonally opposite to Tata Lexus Motors.

One of the few restaurents in the city that doesn't boast of a great advertising, has no link with any five star chain and is surprising full even on weekdays, surviving in this internet age, with just word of mouth publicity.

They serve a range of Indian and Chinese cuisine and make some of the most mouthwatering Singaporean Chicken I've had in a long time, but its the tasty wholesome down to earth Indian food that bowls you over. Just the right combination of spices with an accent on the taste.

Cheers
Anurag
