I've spent some time in Denise and Larina's websites... very informative, thank you both! I have learned a great deal!
But now, I have another question... How would I know what to charge if I decided to do Professional Speaking Engagement?
Most likely, I would speak on The Epidemic of Childhood Obesity in the U.S. and how parents of the latest generation can make some positive lifestyle changes to aid in the health of their children.
I currently have signed with a local city in my area that received a grant from the Kaiser Health Foundation. However, I will teach a "hands on class" (not a speaking engagement) for parents of preschoolers. Same subject matter as described above.

I speak professionally and have done so for several years. I speak on topics related to parenting and am hired by preschools, elementary schools and family life agencies. My fee is $200.00 which seems about standard unless you can somehow get connected to organizations that are in a position to pay a lot of money. I have tried to make a connection with some of the big corporations here in Vancouver to present "Lunch and Learn" sessions but have had no luck so far. My talks are an hour and a half to two hours.

Barb,
Your speaking fee seems rather low for an hour + program. I have been speaking for years now and generally figure my fee based upon a lot of factors. First being preparation time. That includes, creating the program, practicing the program, handouts, powerpoint and ANYTHING that would go into the actual creation of the program. As for fee, if the program is a local program, I charge less than if there is travel included. Some industries do have a maximum they will pay. Others do not. I know several people who speak in the education field and get a much larger fee.
However, being unfamiliar with the norms for speakers in Canada, one group you might want to check out is CAPS - Canadian Association of Professional Speakers. That is a good place to start and I do believe that there is a local chapter in Vancouver.
Also, visit the National Speakers Website - www.nsa-speaker.org and check out the speaker profiles under the topic of education. We have an educators PEG - (Professional Emphasis Group) which could probably help you in developing a higher fee based upon your years of experience and the amount of work you do.

Barb Desmarais | | Thank you Heidi! I'm going to check out CAPS for sure. The reality is for the groups I speak to, $200.00 is often a stretch. I gave a workshop for a local elementary school recently on "Parenting Alone". I quoted my fee of $200.00 but they were only able to pay me $150.00. It's all PR for me though. I've had several clients have come to me through workshops.
I also present at conferences and I get an honorarium which is usually about the same $150. - $200. Again these are conferences hosted by childcare and family life agencies, all who have a very limited budgets.

Stephanie Chandler | | If you're just getting into the speaking business (like me), then I highly recommend Dottie Walter's book "Speak and Grow Rich." It offers great insight into the speaking business and explains how you can build up to better pay rates.
