New business marketing roll out... have I really done all I can do?Views: 641

Shari Thomas

I've been creating a marketing rollout for a small direct sales company who is promoting a software application.

This application has tremendous market potential according to the product developers.

The plan is for it to be sold via "direct sales". In this case that means via the Internet, and "belly-to-belly".

Here are the issues I'm struggling with...

The overall market is way too general for any single small business to even think about penetrating, much less competing in advertising clout.

Because the sales method is direct sales, that means independent reps who are paid strictly by commission. It's a nice fat commission of 67% of the sales price... no discounting allowed. I've been having a really challenging time finding reps who work on commission only... Oh where oh where have the salesmen gone?

Here's what I've done so far...

I've created a "parallel" site which will eventually link to the company site when they finish their marketing upgrade.

I've got a few highly targeted Google AdWords going.

I've written one highly targeted article with more to come... am working on a "white paper" also.

I've been very carefully advertising on Craigslist (it's a real jungle), and we've used RepHunter.com with limited success so far.

I've written one press release and will issue another one on May 1.

I've posted to a few exceptional quality forums. That means they're the right people but very low traffic.

I've initiated a linking strategy but have not yet hooked it directly to the site... still considering how best to prevent link spam.

Have initiated a blog at blogger.com but have not yet linked it to the main site for the same reasons... blog spam.

In the two weeks since the site went live, we've attracted 134 unique visitors, and are sticky enough to have 25% of those folks stay on the site for more than 2 minutes, with 24 staying there in excess of 15 minutes. We've also attracted 12 signups to our newsletter which is issued each week.

Finally, this afternoon I was able to locate us on the second page for one of our easiest search terms. Yes, the site is fully optimized.

I'm open to any and all suggestions. I'm looking for assistance in finding appropriate places (forums, networks, link exchanges, reasonably priced advertising) in the real estate, mortgage broker, "road warrior", or other industries wherever salespeople hang out. This product is for them!

Here's the site to critique and provide suggestions.

Thanks for your help with this,

I hate to be critical.... but when you said 67% commision, and you had no takers something has to be wrong.

I took a look at that website, and am still clueless as to what it is, and what it does. I spent about 5 minutes there, and the features and benefits are pretty nebulous.

To gain interest, an online demo would be useful, as would a clearly stated list of features and benefits. In addition, a comparision between lite and pro.

To build credibility, a link to the full set of documentation, and manuals would help. I did check out the knowledge base, and actually picked up more info there than on the sales site, but its still lacking.

As far as pr and maybe a deal on advertsing a good story on telecom automation in Fortune Small Business could work wonders. We did one something simliar years back, and I think we saved $$$$ on the advertising and the response was mind blowing.

Hello Ron,

Thanks for your candid remarks... and please, be critical.

This site as it's shown purposely plays down the idea of "direct sales" as we fully expect the ratio of product purchases:resellers to be about 90/10.

This is truely a product that when used in the business community, will perform as stated... reduce time (at least 1 hour a day for most business/sales people) and increase profits, etc.

As for demo and tech, the company is upgrading their site at present and until that is completed, I'm reluctant to link to them. They are also producing a CD/DVD with an online component, but that is now behind "my schedule".

I put the "my schedule" in quotes because I'm not sure I'll ever become accustomed to the "no real deadlines" in software marketing.

I love your idea about Fortune Small Business and will pursue that. Someone on another forum suggested gaining favor with airport "Crown Lounges" and we will also pursue that.

I know the audio clips are weak. They have been excerpted from live conference calls and the speaker is more a visionary than a presenter... It's very difficult to pull clips that are longer than 20 seconds and stay on topic if you know what I mean.

Thanks for all your help on this,
Shari
