Do you think the Kotler 4Ps of marketing that we all read about in B-school makes sense today?

I have a few points about it which I have posted on my blog - My 4Ps of Marketing for today's business environment.

What am I saying?
My 4Ps are

  • Profile
  • Profit
  • Personalisation and
  • Permission
Would love to have a heated discussion on the same.

I add a 5th P to Kotler's 4Ps. It's a cheesy P but it's an all important P for me.

Prayer. I can think of the best marketing campaigns following the best marketing strategies but I like to believe that, at the end of the day, a Higher Being dictates where my campaign goes.

This is what you get when your marketing consultant spent 12 years of her formative schooling in a Catholic school run by French nuns. LOL.

Personally, I think the original 4 Ps still represent the way to think about marketing. Your Ps, while interesting, seem to represent a second order, perhaps a lens/framework for organizing one's thoughts on the original 4 Ps. And, they appear to be very consumer product oriented. Is that your intent?

This would apply to any marketing scenario - trade, consumer, investor, etc. The basic model is that
  • There is an audience out there
  • You want the audience to transact with you
  • The audience has to be communicated the benefits of transacting with you
As I said earlier, that the original 4Ps would apply today as a starting point for any marketing strategy but the enunciation that I have proposed puts a new perspective in this competitive scenario

Interesting question Anannya,

I work with International Clients every single day and I must admit that the 4P's apply (universally) just as much today as they did when they were first introduced.

I have however made a slight adjustment to the product one (especially for new businesses)...

It stands for Product Planning - not just product. Very few of us intend to stop business at ONE product. So Product Planning allows us to create a complete plan for success that includes front end and back end products.

This not only allows us to think bigger and plan better - but is in and of itself "evolution focus".

Gotta love it! :o)
