Tutorial ... "Curing A Stalled Program"
=============================================
Occasionally, your computer will stop responding. It just locks up, or "freezes." This may have been caused by a program trying to access a memory location in use by some other program, or some other reason.
Regardless of why, you can try to close an offending program by using three keyboard keys:
Ctrl + Alt + Delete. This is sometimes referred to as The 3 Fingered Salute.
--------- Step 1.
While holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys, press the Delete key. If your computer hasn't lost it's mind entirely, you'll see a "Close Program" dialog:
--------- Step 2.
Select the program that you think may be causing the lock-up (usually the one you last tried to use). Click to highlight it.
--------- Step 3.
Click 'New Task' in XP or 'End Task' in 98 to see if the offending program can be closed.
Note; You may have to go through this routine several times, since many programs won't respond to the Ctrl-Alt-Delete routine on the first, second or even third try.
I've personally had to run through this cycle up to five times with one particularly nasty program failure. And on occasion, not even the 3 fingered salute will solve the problem. A reboot (restarting your computer) is the only cure then.
-------- Another Note:
Don't confuse the 'Turn Off Computer' or 'Shut Down' button with shutting down an individual program.
It's purpose is to shut down your whole operating system, which is the method of choice if the End Task or 'New Task' option doesn't work.
The final and guaranteed way of zapping the offending program is to reboot (restart) the computer.
If your system is totally locked up so even the keyboard doesn't respond and the mouse cursor doesn't move, the only cure is to press the reset button or power switch on your computer. This is the last resort. You will lose any unsaved changes in your data.
Computing sure is fun isn't it?
I'm glad you agree:-) ____________________________________________________ Information Provided by Joe Robson, founder of the outrageously successful Newbie Computer training Club at http://newbieclub.com See his other sites listed at http://www.joerobson.com Private Reply to T.E.A.M. Mom! | |
