I'm a good +++ art director and designer, but no really good businessman.
For long time I'm looking to hire a Sales manager, but didn't have much luck.
Any ideas when to find this rare animal.

I’ve found sales managers are best breed from within your organization. Now I know that doesn’t exactly answer you question. However do help give you some clear and concise answers and tips I’ll need just a bit more information.

How many sales people do you have?
How many would you like?
What would be considered the sales managers duties?
Do you have an operational manual for sales and marketing?
How are you looking to compensate?

I understand if you don’t want to air this all out in a public forum, If not please feel free to send me a private message and we can communicate that way or schedule a phone call.

It's the problem I don't have a full time sell staff.
I'm expect Sales manager do the recruit.
I have 17 freelancers and have a big problem to sale and work in same time.
Most of my customers are coming from referrals and "Corporate partners".

Aug 11, 2006 3:32 pm7 Tips to hiring a sales manager#

Thank you for answering my questions. Here are 7 tips to keep in mind when hiring a sales manager.

1. Most sales manager become sales managers because they were an ace or superstar sales person at one point. And because of that they got promoted to the position. The thing to keep in mind here is just because they were awesome a salesperson, DOES NOT mean that they would be good managers. Often times they are not. And more often then not they are much happier doing what they are good at. And that’s selling directly.

2. Hire a “manager” first and their salesmanship second. This relates to the point above. When looking for a sales manager you want to hire someone who has direct management training and experience. You want someone who loves to manage, as opposed to one who loves being the technician (sales person). A good manager knows how to lead a department. The manager will know how to create the needed goals and key performance indicators required for that department to get results. I’m not saying don’t hire someone without the slightest bit of sales experience or training. But don’t expect to have had that person be a “great” sales person in a previous life.

3. Upgrade your skill set. Often times I’m asked about hiring a “good” sales person or manager. When am I asked this simply respond, why? To which I’m usually told of the companies struggles in sales and marketing. I’m told how the business owner is horrible at sales and hates doing it. And they feel hiring the right sales person will solve all there problems. NOT TRUE. My feeling is this. The business owner while talented and best suited for the work they love to do, and are good at. (In your case being and art director.) They must at least have a good, well rounded, and general knowledge of sales. Most importantly of all they must also believe themselves to be a good sales person, and like the process of selling. Simply put if you’re not good at sales, how will you be able to tell whether or not someone else is? And once you do hire them. How as a leader will you be able to support them?

4. Systems, systems, systems. If you haven’t already starting creating a sales and marketing system. (often referred to as an operations manual.) Start now. Or get someone to help you. Systems are the key to automating any business process. (Especially Sales.) A fantastic quote to keep in mind when thinking about whether systems are needed in your business is this: “Systems help ordinary people, Do extraordinary things” –Michael Gerber. Try never to make your business dependent on any one person including yourself. With a good system you can plug-in almost anyone. Then you can sit back and watch as they produce amazing results.

5. If you won’t be writing the systems yourself that’s fine. However when you look to a hire a sales manager or any manager for that matter. Make sure they have experience writing systems of operations manuals. Also, make sure that you, a coach, or a consultant is there to collaborate with them.

6. It’s your job to create and express the systems. It’s the mangers job to write and enforce them. If you cannot be the one to be along side of your manger during this process. Please make sure once again that you have someone who can.

7. As an entrepreneur who is busy and working hard at your craft. Remember there are resources out there to help you leverage your time, money, energy, and resources. An outside coach or consultant can be an invaluable and highly profitable investment to make in your business. An experienced coach with right tools can easily help you systemize and hire the right personal. In an easy step by step way. A way which will not only save you time and money. But save and maintain a good healthy work\life balance.

The process of taking your business to the next level and hiring your first sales team is a major accomplishment. CONGRATUALTIONS!
