Top Five Dive Bars in Bangalore (not for the weak lined stomach)Views: 8279

My personal "dive bar" favorite in Bangalore is Reddys Bar in Koramangala First Block, just off the Sarjapur ring road junction. Rum and water at almost wholesale rates, but the food was simply divine - pork pepper fry, egg pepper fry and "coca-cola" chicken. Together with the dinner they served up (chapatis and dal/curry), you just got to love the ambience.. typical dingy dirty dirty dive bar style...

Second, Coorg Hut on the Sarjapur Outer Ring Road... Run by a Coorg family, they made the best pork curry and roti as well as some incredible dal fry. It was a BYOB joint that offered excellent value for money... A sit out place where you could drink the night away peacefully

Next for me is Samudra, off the Majestic bus terminus, for the best egg pepper fry and some tangy fish delights...

Fourth place to the Canara Bar and Restaurant just off Natraj Theatre in Seshadripuram, next to Philips Wines. They serve some fantastic kori roti and chicken gassi and on a hot (?) saturday afternoon this went very well with KF beer... They make some nice "thread chicken" as well

Finally on my list is Madan's Bar in Koramangala (near the Vivek's showroom) or on the road parallel to the Juke Box restaurant... Some cheap chicken delights to go with not so ridiculously cheap liquor (by dive bar standards)

Any adventurers in Bangalore, please do try and let me know if you have some on your A-list as well?

And a final note of caution, please avoid if your stomach is capable of doing turns seeing roaches on the walls as you enter...

Dare I say, bon vivant!!!

I'm assuming you mean quarter bars :)

I only knew two and we used to go there cause they used to be open late in the night after all the pubs shut down.

1.) Rose Bar on Brigade Road. - Open till about 3. Bad Bad Bad Bad food. Cheap booze. Only felt like going there when one was missing Bombay quarter bar like environment.

2.) Carnival on Residency Road - Again used to be open quite late (no idea about now). Food was just about edible.

Apart from these two

3.) Brigade Fuel (next to Pecos, off Brigade Road) - This was the only decent quarter I found in Bangalore so not quite sure if it qualifies as a Dive Bar. The food (beef/pork chilli) was decent. Closes quite early though.

chandru man...

of course rose bar... a k a the golden rose, opposite st. josephs commerce college and behind the catholic club, only as i was more a koramangala lad, i did not often go to the st marks vicinity... but yes, that's surely a topper as well... as dingy and dirty as you could get...

i've been to carnival, you mean the one next to the petrol bunk on the corner of brigades and residency... but that was too open and had too much flora and tube lighting for my liking...

Dewars is not a dive bar, raunaq, its quite polished indeed... but I agree the best "spare parts" food in town... chicken liver fry et al ;-)

Have been top Coorg Hut once and boy, reminded me of some of the dingy bars I frequented in Mumbai specially Chembur.

And there was one another place where I went.. but can't remember the name. It is on way from Belandhur to Koramangala. Still bad with the road directions and name in this city :(. But this place served some real good Malabari stuff and so dark and dingy that half the time you wont know what you eating but food was gr8... washed it with lotsa Old Monk

Finally visited Reddy's last night.

We entered the bar around 9:30ish, I had promised my friend Prashant a gastronomic adventure.

As we looked around for a place to sit, some miscommunication occured and we left the bar only to realise it was because he thought it was the wrong place since no one was eating.

So we returned promptly and seated ourselves at a table where a solitary man was already nursing his drink. It was a white plastic table which had been ghastly disfigured by black spots of cigarette burns.

I had lost Sumanth's recommendations and wasn't quite sure what to order so we asked the guy for what's to eat in non veg and he rattled off some standard chilli, manchurian etc dishes.

So from what I vaguely remembered, I asked him tentatively (and slightly embarrassedly) if there is a Coca Cola Chicken, at which his eyes lit up and I was instantly recognised as a man in the know.

In the same breath I ordered a Egg Pepper Fry and was met with a smile of respect and admiration.

We ordered a Quarter of the redoubtable Smirnoff and waited.

Two glasses, freshly washed, arrived, with water drippping off them from all sides. Looked for some tissues to clean them but there were none. Ah well the alcohol would kill all the germs anyway.

The Egg Pepper Fry arrived first, packaged very non attractively. We let off a collective "Hmmm", had a bite each and let off a collective "Hmmm" again and pondered for a while.

Prashant decides he likes it and starts comparing it to other pepper frys he's had in his Bangalore stay. I was of the opinion it would have been better with a bit less salt or properly mixed salt. But now, complaining about finding a blob of salt suddenly in your food in a dive bar wouldn't be a very macho thing would it? I reserved my views.

During this time the roof had started to leak and while we could bear a drop or two every 5 seconds, we decided it's easier to go sit on a empty bench instead.

The Coca Cola Chicken appeared, in brand colors resplendent enough to make a coke ad agency flunkie proud but fell flat when it came to performance. Maybe the elusive taste was too subtle for us after the zingy pepper fry.

One again, we summoned, "The Man". He dropped the word "Pork". We ordered the result of "What's the best pork dish?" -- Pork Chilli. This one was the pièce de résistance, soft boneless pork pieces in a spicy dry red gravy.

This enthused us to have another Quarter and we ordered some spicy chips and chomped and sipped merrily like happy campers discussing the benfits of having cars in Bangalore and how Bangalore weather rocks. We left around 10:45PM when the bar was almost closing.

The bill for the evening? A mere 400 INR.

Disappointing on 2 counts:

1. Reddy's closing at around 11 pm, and
2. Lack of flavor in coca cola chicken

Ah well, show me the way to the next whisky bar

How is the Coca Cola Chicken supposed to taste?

This one was very bland with a very thick wierd tasting batter covering of some sort. Maybe it was a off day.

All bars close by 11 or 11:30 now.

Except ahem (such details aren't to be publicised ;-)

Chandra, You ditched me??? You were to come to i-Bar, you forgot????

And what about Surya Garden on Airport Road!!! Its next to the gate of carlton towers (which houses TGIF). Its got a restaurant and a small garden thing (where I usually sit). My favourite old monk quarter for just 40 bucks. In snacks, one could try the fish fries, tangdi kababs and tomato omlettes. Had dinner just once, and the chicken biryani was sort of OK. Would rate it 7 / 10...

Coca cola chicken is supposed to taste hot (spicy) and slightly sour, as I recall it. The less batter the better

Goes well with old monk and water...

What is a:

1. Dive bar?
2. Quarter bar?

Anyway, my vote is for Dewars, Chin Lung on Residency Road and Northwinds at Palace Gutthalli. Chin Lung has half decent Chinese food. Northwinds has excellent Coorgi food.

1.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dive_bar

2.) Quarter bar is where they serve booze by the quarter at not very expensive rates as compared to pegs. More of a Bombay concept. Unlike a Dive these can be both shady places or (relatively) posh places.

Reddy's Adventures Part II

So I joined some friends in Pingara and they were generally unhappy about the alcohol taste. So I instantly grab the chance to suggest a change to Reddy's next door.

Easily done. We entered Reddy's and sat at the cigarette burnt table with S1 staring in horror at its condition.

I sat next to the wall and leaned back on it. A few minutes later I looked towards the door only to find a HUGE COCKROACH SITTING ON MY SHOULDER! I generally freaked out swatted it off and went and sat on the other side of the table away from the wall with all the restaurant staff and waiters laughing at me.

S2: (in his mallu accent broken hindi) -- "Kya cnb, cockroach accha hai yaar".

Me: HUH?

So I decided to give the Coca Cola Chicken another try. This time it redeemed itself. It was spicy and tangy and not much batter. S2 loved it too.

Suddenly there was a HUUUGE CRASH right behind me and some liquid fell into my shoes. A guy carrying crates of beer inside had managed to drop a bottle (or two) from about shoulder height. The bottle had exploded after falling and there was glass scattered all over the restaurant and rivers of beer flowing under our table.

S2: "There's a puddle under the table."

Me: "It's beer yaar." -- (As if it made it ok)

S2: "Hmm yeah ok." -- (it did!)

It was more or less uneventful after that apart from needing to swat off ants climbing on my shirt.

We had pork pepper fry which was just ok. The problem with ordering pork is that half the meat is fat so we ended up eating only half and ordered a Chicken Chilli Dry which was also just ok. I think the "Dry" word confused the guy and he got something which was more like chicken pakoda.

Once again, damages were trivial.
