Hii Anuradha,
Welcome to the land of dragons and happiness BHUTAN.A small kingdom with more happiness :Land of the Thunder Dragons.Worlds 8th happiest country.Indian stands at 125th!!!Telephone and internet or mobile is still far cry- including education or medicine. But a well disciplined country one must visit.
One dnt need a passport or visa.Only carry Indianness proof voter I card of anything like DL etc with photo.Smoking is prohibited strictly, one is not allowed to carry smoking items. Can carry drinks upto 4 bottles but cant drink on the road.Only one is allowed to have at bars.NO TO DRUGS LIKE GULF COUNTRIES.Remember Prasad gurujee at Dubai!!! Bhutan prisons are of horrible- (one will collapse within 10 minutes!!!).
Food is pure NV.. Chinese type as rice preparations are less. But more of red chilly!!!
To go either use DRAK air from Delhi to Thimphu or from Kolkata to Thimphu.By train get down at New Alipur duwar Jn and go to 40 Km away Hasimara then to border post Phunentsholing( pronounce as Phuntsling). Its 10 km.The border post guards will check ones identity and note down the durations of stay.If hire a taxi from Alipurduwar then the taxi will help.Phunentsholing till Thimphu will take 6-7 hrs.Taxi takes 4-5 hours.Perhead 700 Rs. The currency are same of India. It the only country to come at per with India as per world bank.

ayesha sitara
Republic Day weekend. Go fishing with Gerry Martin:

Long weekend and nothing stimulating to do? Why deal with hangovers, traffic, noise and what we call air here in Bangalore?

There’s some fresh air, serenity, good company and new experiences on offer.

Go fishing with Gerry Martin - A 2 night camp out on the banks of a 70-acre lake, 180 km (3.5 hrs drive) away from Bengalooru and 20 minutes from Nagarahole.

Watch exotic migratory birds; get to experience Gerry’s insights into the rich biodiversity of the lake, which will blow your mind. Landing a fish is almost guaranteed!

- Jan 26th to 28th. (Two night three days)
- Rs 5000/-per head
- Leave Bangalore at 6am on 26th
- Return to Bangalore at 6pm on the 28th.
- You can drive up on your own too!!
This excursion is ex Bengalooru. Included in price are transport, food, and accommodation in tents. However, you will have the luxury of proper toilets. Also bon fire and barbeque!!

Activities:
Camp on the banks of a lake – Barbecue dinners by bonfire- experience farm life and actually see the stars at night.

Fishing – We will teach you how to make a rod from bamboo, tie a line, float, hook and everything else you need to know to land your first fish!!

Bird watching – Vinod will help you spot and identify interesting birds and will run you through their lives around the lake.

Reptile experiences – Night walks to find nocturnal life.

Jan 22, 2007 6:36 amre: Wanted Ideas for Coorg holiday#

Tushar Prabhu
When our office went on its trip to Coorg, we decided not to make it a sight-seeing trip, but to make it an experience. We stayed at a place called "Shanti Estate" this is about 12k out of Cooorg Town, atop a hill. A coffee and vanilla farm, this has two lovely cottages set in a valley with a little duck pond added to the effect. Perfect for lovely treks and coupled with a friendly old couple as hosts, this is quite an idyllic place.

On the food front, we had found Shanti Estate to be the best, making home cooked meals. All other places we checked were a disappointment. Try and avoid all the seemingly good hotels and definitely the ones that have an 'International' in their name. Seems to be synonymous with bad food in Coorg.

Do visit Tala Kaveri while there. Other than that, my recommendation would be to chill out and make it an experience in spending time together instead of making it a sight seeing trip. Coorg is a lovely place to relax. And relaxing too, if you let soak in the place and allow it to relax you.

You can contact Shanti Estate on vgopal31@yahoo.co.in or call 223690 (forget the STD Code). And I made a mistake with the tariff. It used to be Rs 200 per head (not Rs 800).

Places to visit (if you want to make it a sight seeing trip) would include:

* Taka Kaveri (birth of Kaveri river. quite picturesque)
* Abbi Falls
* Madikeri fort
* Raja's Seat (also called the sunset point)
* Tibetian colony closeby
* Lots of trekking routes. Take a local guide. The people at Shanti Estate would be able to help.

Hope you have a wonderful trip
Tushar

Both are within your budget, pretty good and located in the city centre (Mall Rd). Dont opt for the packages that includes meals, as you will get a lot more better options in both the places. Manoj Sethu
Plamgrove was very good. But the last time I was there it was pretty worn down. I don't know about it now.

You could try Dasprakash, the very typical south indian hotel, with the traditional wooden furniture, lot of parking space. You get excellent pongal at the restaurant.

Could anyone suggest a good hotel near / walking distance from Kodai lake?

I was trying booking through www.makemytrip.com on the net, I see Hotel Mount View etc, but any other good and economical ones would be great.

Thanks Madhavi, but what's the room tariff at Villa Retreat and how do i book it? Also, any other hotels?

I am planning for end April and I hate these package trips offered by travel agents. U dont get time to breathe the air of the place, they just make you run from one place to another :)

Hey Manoj,

I have a resort in Kodai, its inaugurating on 15th of April, beautiful cozy cottages, library with a fire place, camp fire, Mini Golf on top of the Hill ( will take an extra month for this )Pool Table, Indoor Games and probably the best location in Kodaikanal ( the scenic mountains )

If you are looking for a busy vacation filled with numerous activities, then it wont be suitable, if you are looking for some peace, beautiful View, away from the bustling crowd, then i got a right place

Ma Resort Jain Farms is 5 min away from Hill County and here you have a premium Cottage : the Bed would have 2 Big Pillows, 2 Big Cusions, 3 Small Cushions, Blanket, QUilt, on the whole 7 pillows, Furniture from Godrej , linen from maspar and more

just 8 km from Kodai Lake,,,,

if you decide the otherway, good restaurants in Kodai are Hill Top, Astoria, and one just adjacent to 7 cross road below the Re

if you are looking for quality room with simple but good facilities HillTop is the Best, carlton is expensive, shivpriya is cheaper, Hill County is good again expensive

Hi Pratik,
You can check Grand Hotel du Calvados in Saint-Lazare area. Rates around 80 Euros. But if you are a first timer to Paris make sure you stay near Saint-Lazare at any cost. Simple reason being it is the most central and convinient location. All tourist spots are in walking distance and also the main station which connects the entire of Paris is 2 mins away. The business district is also accessible via trains. Basically if you stay at Saint-Lazare, your travel expense will be reduced by 60%, believe me!

I stay in Paris Garnier near this place whose rate is around 110 Euros.

Anoter small tip. Get the weekely tourist travel pass from Saint-Lazare railway station. This will make any travel ( bus, train, underground train) very inexpensive.

Bikash Kumar Das
Friends, I did posted a topic year ago at BBN with same heading. As time go on,there was lot many enquiries. But now people are requesting me to accompany for more realistic and adventerous trip which also help to provide medical facilities at any emergencies.Even single person is also willing to pay for my charges as well air fare.As of now I am planning for Guwahati-North Assam and East Bhutan driving over the Himalayan rivers-Orang National park(rhino),Bomdilla-Twang( beyond clouds)-China border-Chella pass-Tezpur( King Bans encient kingdom, whose daughter Usha was kidnaped by Krishna's son Aniruddha and was a big battle for this)-Kaziranga National park-Namdapha National park at 4500 Ft ASL with half in Burma and then back to Nagaland and to Shillong-Dawki( Bangladesh border)-Cherrapunji and back to Guwahati. If time permits there is another tiger and Rhino park at west Assam, where half lies with Bhutan. Its Manas national Park.Specially famous for tigers.
But July till Sep is not good as climate worsens with flood.
This trips will not be as usual operated by the operators to simply dump at a place and hurriedly taking away.I am planning self driven small vehicles like car/jeep only. This will be more educative with the NE history and importance as well knowing villages /Peoples more closely by visiting on the way.
Air Deccan has now direct daily Blr GHY flight at 0545 and ETA GHY at 0925.So much more easy since its the first morning flight to Guwahati.Return flt is at 1025 hrs daily.
Any interested small groups or individual may contact me/PM please. My intension is to know NE India more better.
Happy tourism.

I just returned today after a package stay at Villa Retreat, Kodai. It's a compact resort-like atmosphere, quite economical, but availability is quite difficult as it runs full throughout the year.

It is also strategically located closer to Coakers walk, Bryant Park and Kodai Lake.

So try reaching / booking them fast.

You could contact Mr Nazar / Mrs Leena on their numbers 04542 240940, 243556. You could also refer my name, I am sure they'll do the needful.

Hi,

There's this place in B'lore (off Infantry Road) where you get 1 decent room with attached toilet, phone, television -- all this for Rs.500/day!

Any experienced ryzer know of such place in Mumbai also? (Toilet should have Western commode, and a Shower though)

I know by Mumbai standards, such a place might cost upto Rs.1000/day. But even that's okay!

Ram Sridhar
Like Arun has mentioned, there are three Palaces/Fort of Tipu are in and around Bangalore. Here is the detailed info:

1.TIPU'S FORT/PALACE-City Market Area, Bangalore: In the busy, crowded City Market area lies the remnants of Tipu's Fort. Originally this fort was built by Chikkadeva Raya and was later extended, dimantled and rebuilt by Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan.

What remains now is parts of the fort wall with a tablet marking the place where Cornwallis had breached it in 1791. In the courtyard is the Ganesha Temple that is popularly thought to represent Tipu Sultan's religious tolerance. The fort is noted for its beautifully carved arches on the gate walls.

Within the fort are the remains of Tipu's Palace. Haider Ali started the construction which was completed by Tipu Sultan in 1791. It was used as a summer retreat. It was known as the "Abode of Peace". Currently the settings evoke memories of a two storied ornate wooden structure with pillars, arches and balconies. Location: In the City Market area.

The main charm of the fort is the art gallery of nearly a thousand historical photos, including those of viceroys, maharajas and other famous personalities besides the delicate carvings and paintings.

Visiting Hours: 10am to 6pm. The palace is closed on Sunday. There is also an Entry Fee to the fort.

2.TIPU'S FORT-DEVANAHALLI:
A small stone tablet surrounded by a small structure is all that announces the birthplace of Tipu Sultan in Devanahalli. Situated 35 kms from Bangalore, on Bangalore-Bellary Road, Devanahalli, was earlier known as Devana Doddi and Devana Pura. Tipu renamed it as Yusufabad, which however did not prove to be popular.

Tipu Sultan was born in Devanahalli in 1750. As one reaches the town from Bangalore, one finds a signboard, proclaiming the birthplace of Tipu. A few yards away is a stone tablet surrounded by fields, stating that Tipu was born here. A little distance away is the Devanahalli fort.

The fort was built in 1501 by Mallabairegowda, and remained until the mid seventeenth century, in the hands of his descendants. In 1749, Mysore Dalawai, Nanjarajaiah, attacked the fort and occupied it. Later, the fort passed into the hands of Hyder Ali and then Tipu Sultan. In 1791, Lord Cornwallis laid siege to the fort and took possession of it during the Mysore War.

The house in Devanahalli where Tipu and Hyder Ali stayed can be seen. Residents of the town say that the authorities have made no attempt to either preserve or protect the monuments. Others point out that the house of Dewan Purnaiah, who was a high ranking official during the time of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, still exists. But there is no board or sign indicating this.

The old buildings and structures in the fort are disintegrating, gradually. The fort is also crumbling and is badly in need of repairs. Several houses have sprung up within the walls and buildings and other structures dating to the period of Tipu Sultan are either being demolished or modernised.

3.TIPU'S PALACE-NANDI HILLS

The pleasant hill resort of Nandi Hills is also known as Nandigiri or Nandidurga amongst the locals. The Nandi Hills have attracted people since long. Nandi hills were the summer haven of Tipu Sultan as well as the British. The palace of Tipu Sultan and the Bungalows of the British stand in testimony of the same. Now Nandi Hills are popular with the tourists and act as ideal weekend getaway for the people from Bangalore. In the past the Nandi Hills have attracted the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Pt. Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi, Sir Mark Cubbon, Queen Elizabeth II among others.

Seeking some information on "economical" hotels for a night near Delhi and Mumbai international airports.

It seems all of the international flights to Delhi and Mumbai land late at nights, more like midnight or 1am.

I will basically sleep and shower and move on to main train station the following morning, where I will be travelling extensively on Indian railway systems.

Appreciate for your help and information on the economical hotels near by the airports.

Cheers,

hope this is what you need.

Rajarajeshwari Nagar is an area to the southwest of Bangalore, Karnataka, India, on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway. A magnificent arch that marks the entrance to the area is visible from the Mysore Road. The arch was built by the Rajarajeshwari Temple Trust and was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Shri P. V. Narasimha Rao.

Rajarajeshwari Nagar derives its name from the famous Rajarajeshwari Nagar temple located just over one kilometer from the arch. The temple, which was built in the late 1960s, has Jnanakshi Shri Rajarajeshwari as its deity and is maintained by the Kailasa Ashrama Trust.

What was once a beautiful valley surrounded by hills and full of greenery is today a bustling area with schools, colleges, and nursing homes. Rajarajeshwari Nagar comes under the governance of CMC (City Municipal Corporation) and is mainly divided into Ideal Homes Township, BEML Layout, BHEL Layout and Pattanagere.

One immediately encounters the Ideal Homes Township upon entering Rajarajeshwari Nagar. It was formed by the Ideal Homes Society in the late 1970s, and today it is a prime property point in Bangalore. BEML layout is further ahead and is divided into five stages. It is comparatively larger than the rest of the areas in and around Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and contains many shopping complexes and hotels. Pattangere is also a beautiful area inside Rajarajeshwari Nagar with an old look and feel to it.

Rajarajeshwari Nagar, which was once considered to be far from Bangalore, is today one of the prime properties in Bangalore and is very well connected by bus. With as many as six engineering colleges (PES, RV, Ambedkar, GAT, RNSIT, JSSATE and SJBIT) within a short drive, and a software park (Global Village) situated nearby, the area has become a popular place to live for many students and techies. In addition, the area's greenery and parks attract many retirees.

Omkar Hills and Shridhar Gudda, both of which are within a five minute drive of Rajarajeshwari Nagar, offer breathtaking views of southern Bangalore. Omkar Hills is said to be the highest point in Bangalore. Also place like Big Banyan Tree locally known as Doda Alada Mara (also spelled Dodda Alada Mara) ) and Manchenbele Dam are just a few minutes drive from here.

Land is selling very rapidly in and around Ideal Homes and BEML layout. Nursing homes, petrol bunks, banks and half a dozen schools have been constructed in the past two years, and land prices have skyrocketed in recent years.

The Halagevaderahalli Lake, which was once a beautiful spot, has gone dry, and is now a wasteland.

Today the township is also known by locals for the administrative office of Peace Child India, that causes a moderate affluence of foreign volunteers to the area.

Thank you Karthik & Venkatesan for replying!

I turned to the web when the directory, the helpline as well as countless people I asked yielded nothing. And would you believe it Karthik, there are temples that give their history, contact details, location, everything on the net, in keeping pace with the times! And thanks Venkatesan, I had seen that township website (if only the numbers had been given in that window on the temple in the home page). I needed info for somebody on a particular seva and finally got a response from the temple itself when they got a fax I'd sent to a fax number I found in the directory. Thanks a lot again.

Misha Pamnany
Hi everyone,

I havent been a part of this network for a long time as i've moved to Goa to a run a restuarant/lounge called Shiro Beach. i miss bangalore but the the new challenges Goa has presented me with its diverse customers. Here's a brief note about my place -

Greetings from Shiro Beach!

Just to introduce ourselves - an exotic restaurant/lounge in an exotic location bang on the beach. With a spectacular view and even better cocktails... it is a totally different experience then ever felt before.
For photographs please go to -

http://picasaweb.google.com/pamisha/ShiroBeach

An Asian castle of sensuous indulgence

'Shiro', meaning castle in Japanese, has been conceptualized to set off the mind in many ways - with its interiors, its food and drink. It has a sensuous feel and has been built to represent an Asian Castle , complete with water flows, low seating, niched spaces and mellow lighting.

"Shiro", has a mysterious spa like aura as you enter. Its double heightened ceiling provides openness and a feeling of lofty magnificence. Dominating the central space of the restaurant, are three 16ft high figures of consorts dropping water into a large moat.

Shiro's menu includes a range of Japanese food (sushi, sashimi, yakitori), a wide range of dim sums (prawn and asparagus dumpling, mushroom dumpling, lobster with laksa sauce), and other Korean and Thai specialty dishes to name just a few, and also boasts of over twenty vegetarian dishes.

The feeling in Shiro is definitely eclectic. It has strong Asian overtones and clever reinterpretations of traditional Japanese, Chinese and Balinese elements which make it warm, engaging and tropical. It exudes equally a sensuous and serene energy. And as one walks through the different private rooms, each offering a unique experience of oriental mystique in a very contemporary style, one feels enveloped in a Castle of Cool !"

Do come by if you are in Goa anytime.

Cheers!

Jan 24, 2008 7:14 pmHave a great holiday - Weekend getaway to Wayanad.#

Deepak Sriram
Hello Everyone,

I happened to stay at the Tree house in Kalpetta, Wayanad-Kerala last week, while I was on a Business visit. Just wanted to share the details with others who are planning a holiday this weekend or after..

His website is currently being updated hence my post.

Mr.Anil and his family are very warm and hospitable and have hosted many guests from worldover.
My stay at the Warm and Cozy cottage designed by Mr.Anil Abraham was just fantastic & simple.

It's a Tree house, set beautifully in a green Coffee estate.

Activities:

1) Visit Muthanga Wildlife sanctuary (after Gundlupet- Enroute to Wayanad)
2) Explore the Eddakal Caves at (Neolithic cave site dating back to 3000 years, Enroute to Wayanad).

Notes: Then Drive to Kalpetta where Mr.Anil will receive you. Check into the cottage & Relax.

3) Undergo a Theraputic & relaxing Ayurvedic massage at a suggested Centre which has good practitioners.
4) Adventure enthusiats can go trekking & Camping to Chembara peak. At 2100 mts its the tallest summit in the region.(Don't forget to get your small Tent & sleeping bags).

5) Speed boat ride through the beautiful waterways among small mountains is available at reasonable price.

Tariffs:

Rs.2000/- Per Couple or Two Individuals.
Rs.500/- Extra for Children Below 8 years.
Rs.700/- Extra for Children betw 9-20 years.

Note: Maximum of 4 people can be accomodated in the single cottage. The other cottages will be constructed soon.

Food:

Breakfast + Dinner is included in tariffs.
Lunch will cost Rs.50/- per person.

Driving Advice:

Total hours of drive: 6-7hrs.
Avoid Night driving as the roads are bad.

Road from Bangalore- Mysore is very good.
But the road from Gundlupet- Sultan Batthery is a rough stretch.

Contact:

Mr.Anil Abraham
Mob: 094956-69408
Address: Buena Vista Hut,
Kavummmannam Post, Kalpetta 673121.

Notes:

Travel in Kalpetta & Wayanad will cost you as per actuals. Jeeps can be hired.

Muthanga wildlife sanctuary: Is also known as the Wayanad sanctuary and is located in the protected

area networks between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The Muthanga national park at Wayanad,

Kerala is spread over an area of around 344 square kilometers. This lush expanse of land is a haven

to many animals. In the sanctuary one can find animals like sloth bears, sambhar (deer like animal),

elephants, monkeys, tigers, reptiles, deer, panthers, etc. There are many species of rare birds in this sanctuary as well.

Enjoy the peace, fresh air and simple lifestyle.

Have a great Holiday!

Cheers

A unique Wildlife Resort at Karapur, nestled in the southern fringes of the Nagarahole National Park, the Kabini River Lodge is a perfect getaway for nature lovers. The breathtaking locale with the tranquil backwaters of the River Kabini presents an ideal setting for a long-awaited vacation. Once the hunting lodge of the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore, Kabini River Lodge is today rated by the British Tatler's Travel Guide as one of the top 5 wildlife resorts in the world. Kabini is pure elephant country as one can see numerous herds at a time. However, the blaze of the elusive tiger always haunts you as you roam through the verdant jungle here. Once widely known for the mass elephant-trapping operations called 'Khedda', Kabini stands as the one of the brightest beacons for wildlife preservation in India today.

May 14, 2008 4:20 pmWARNING ON MIS- LEADING FOR TOUR#

Bikash Kumar Das
Friends, It come to my notice that some Assam settled Nepal origin people are looking to take people/foreigners for North East India tour. They might be working in good star hotels etc.But they merely know the beauty of nature or conditions. This will bring bad name to the people of the region as well to India.Kindly verify properly the person approaching for his work, base and origin etc.
We very few organizer for the NE region are doing well with the scene of the landscape/geography and the people.WE are trying to bring lot many international type systems in the NE India to explore by all.
This type of people might not be able to help at any need and will vanish with money placing you in big trouble.
This is highly important to note.Kindly travel with a good named organization.

Jun 03, 2008 12:34 pmAny contacts in Sri Lanka to book budget hotel room?#

ravi kota
Hey Guys, I am travelling to Sri Lanka on the 20th of June and returning on the 24th. I don't have any contacts in Sri Lanka and need to book a hotel room which need not be fancy and definitely not expensive. Since I am looking for low budget places I don't think they would have any websites for online booking, even if some do, I have no way of verifying whether pictures on the site are facts or fiction.

So if somebody can help me in this matter I will really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Kiran.

Planning to go to Pondi and Auro beach and looking for beach huts/ shacks on the beach to stay.

My questions are:

3. Any recommendations for any particular hut?
4. Do they have bathroom facilities attached?

Ram Sridhar
Wave Beach Guesthouse, Pondicherry
Situated very near the beach, this property offers basic huts with common facilities for guests including shared kitchen and bathrooms. A property belonging to the Auroville ashram, all Auroville rules and regulations apply [no alcohol, no smoking, no noise etc.]. The beach close to the resort is calm. There are no specified tariffs; however guests are expected to make a donation to the ashram.

Rooms & Amenities
More a guest house for the ashram than a resort there are no fancy amenities here. Basic vegetarian food is served at meal times.

Ph:0413 - 2623340

I don't have any feedback about the quality of the huts or amenities available. So, thoroughly clarify your doubts with the guesthouse before you go.

Instead of looking around for a contact, why not just walk into the Passport Office with a filled up Tatkal Application. Have a chat and figure out what's required .... failing which just file the Application with the fees .... you should be able to get the renewed passport within a week ....

Well thats the last option. Until my travel date my schedule is shockingly booked. Le concierge anyway said that for Tatkal, I'll have to run around myself.

The good news is that I was able to get hold of the Senior Immigration officer at BIAL and he cleared it. Said I could fly and that I shouldn't have any problems.

I'll decide over a sleep tonight if I should go by his words or cancel a ton of things and get busy with tatkal.

Feb 13, 2011 4:34 amLooking for travel partners for travelling abroad around the months of March-April-May#

Ria K
Hello

Looking for parents with children (esp. daughters) who are around 15-16 years of age who would like to travel with others in the same age group. (during any of these months-March/April/May depending on when the exams finish for the children)

Looking to travel to either Uttaranchal/ Sri Lanka/ Thailand/ England/ or any other suggestions welcome.
We like Historical places, ancient ruins, scenic beauty, fun and adventure, para sailing, snuba diving, flight of the gibbons, exploring new things. Not much into religious places unless they are really, really old marvels.

Can either book through a travel agent who can custom-make the holiday or plan a budget travel on our own.

Need only SERIOUS, COMMITTED people since we need to plan NOW, ahead of time for the best deals on flights and hotels, etc. and who will NOT back out at the last minute.

More people, more fun for all.

Thank you.

Mar 15, 2011 5:57 pmrejection of health travel insurance policy claim#

prabha rao
Hello all,
Please can someone advise me whom to approach when the claim for travel insurance has been rejected. My husband was diagnosed with multiple myleloma (bone marrow cancer)for the first time in the USA and was hospitalised there. My daughter paid for the drugs and lab works. What we are asking is payment of the emergency hospital bills. After the initial 3 cycles of chemotherapy and his condition being stabilised we flew back to India. Now the insurance company is rejecting the claim, after telling the hospital there to go ahead with the treatment. I heard that there is a regulatory body called IRDA which deals with these type of complaints. Does anyone know if there is an office in Bangalore whom I can approach for help.
Or do I need to consult a good lawyer to fight it out in the court.
Has anyone else experienced this type of problem and how did they go about it.
will appreciate an early advice.
Prabha.
