Smoking ... facts and fictionViews: 479

I own up.. am a smoker and have been ON and OFF cigs for a long time now.. Started during my hostel days.. I today smoke "Ultra Light" Cigarettes.. which claim to have less than 4mg tar. I do not smoke at home, in the car or in front of my kids.

Pallavi's questionnaire and various responses therein have set me thinking about smoking once again... I am sure you will not find a single soul (except maybe the Marketing Directors of ITC, Philip Morris & the pack) who will promote smoking... but really how harmful is a few puffs today?

1) With the advent of low tar cigarettes and superior filters, is the tar deposit significant enough??

2) The Carcinogens we inhale through Industrial and Vehicular pollution is far more than those from cigarettes.

3) What if a person smokes 5 - 8 low tar cigarettes a day?? Can't our lungs keep with up this small onslaught?

4) As regards passive smoke.. developing basic courtesies like not smoking in a closed room or in car or other places where it may affect others... can this be a solution.

5) Alcohol was once considered to be equally dangerous.. but today its not in the same league.. people are more educated about quality and quantities of consumption.. is there a line we can draw about smoking?

6) As compared to smoking, working in the mines, painting shops and similar environments where the SPM count is high can cause much higher damage to your lungs.

I know its easy to condemn... but may be if you think on it a bit????
