I intend to make it a budget travel. Travel bases will be New York / San Fransisco / Minneapolis (friends staying here). The trip duration can be 20-22 days. i want to be in New York for the new year celebrations. Can you please help with an itinery covering major destinations, travel tips? I dont want to make the trip very hectic and should be able to throw in a couple of camping etc. Private Reply to jvyas | Nov 20, 2006 7:08 pm | | re: Trip to USA | # | Devil's Trill | | make sure you book your flight tickets for travel within US right now - as you get closer to the date, the prices go up by as much as 300%.
Also make sufficient allowance for flights getting cancelled due to bad weather. But in order to get a good view of everything you must get there very early like around 12:00 noon. you will have a long wait but it will be worth it. Take it from a New Yorker and make sure you wear sneakers!!!

If you were to land in NY city, spend about 4 days. Take in some landmarks such as Empire state Bldg, UN, maybe a broadway show, Central Park, few rides on the subway (commuter trains), Statue of Liberty, even a cruise around the Island of Manhattan.
Ellis Island, maybe open, but check it out. Ellis Island was the place where early immigrants from Europe arrived and settled in other states. Great museum there and history of the immigrants arriving. You can buy a 4 day unlimited pass for transportation pass (for subways and buses). Spend another 3 days before you return home.
Unfortunately, accomodations are very high priced in the city. Hotels are very high priced. Maybe try to stay in a hostel, away from Manhattan. It's easy to commute by subway miles away and they are very frequest.
For a hostel check out: www.hostelworld.com
Minneapolis is even more colder than NY city in winter.:-)). So, bundle up. No winter camping there.:-)). Even the great lakes are frozen that time of the year. I never been to Minneapolis. Good, you have friends in the city to stay.
No snow in San Francisco in winter! But, it does get cold at night, is manageble with a jacket. Downtown and Fishermens Wharf, Pier 39, China Town, are good place to hang out. San Francisco has an excellent public transportation with BART rail, light rail, buses, cable cars, city cars(trams). You can buy a three day pass for transportation in the city. There are plenty of ethnic restaurant places with moderate prices and affordable.
The downside is accomodations. Hotels are high priced. Check out hostel accomodations. Check out the above site for hostels for economic rates.
For camping, you may want to google "Bay Area" in California. You may need a car to drive. Instead of camping, I suggest taking a bus or flight to Los Angeles for couple or three days. Look around Hollywood, maybe Disneyland in Anaheim (Orange county)for a day. Perhaps, it may be too much to visit Los Angeles. Or go furthur north of San Francisco for camping. There are wonderful green trees furthur north of "Bay Area". It's a pleasant spreadout area and less crowded.
Welcome to America!
Happy travels!
Cheers,
Ernie

Make sure you do a lot of layering for keeping warm - am not sure if you can get anything good in India for protection from the blizzards - I bought most of my warm clothing after reaching here. but buy thermal wear - they're cheaper in India.
In NY I'll advice you to get comfortable with travelling on the subway asap after your arrival. Its a lot of info for starters :) Will sure keep bugging you folks as the plans become more concrete :) Private Reply to jvyas | Nov 22, 2006 1:21 pm | | re: Trip to USA | # | X Y | | I lived and worked 3 years in New York City, and I will confidently say I have seen, tasted and experienced less than 10% the city has to offer in spite of my active outdoor lifestyle. Some people live their entire lives there and still manage to cover only half.
If you are just looking for major tourist attractions in a checklist style, any website on New York City will give you the run-down.
I could tell you secret special places, but cannot without knowing what your interests are (heritage? arts? food? museums? broadway theater? clubs/nightlife? parks? shopping? tall buildings?).

I am more of a traveller / wanderer and less of a tourist. I like to experience a place. Problem with the USA is its such a large place..its difficult to decide what to see what to skip! I enjoy more of natural beauty but I believe NY has a lot to offer on the art front as well..so would certainly like to experience that. America might be huge but I dont think its packed-you know what I mean? There are pockets you dont want to miss A litle like India?-
