Somit, YMCA is a good bargain near the Sentral KL train station. It's about US$20/night. You get your own room, bath room/shower and staff is friendly. The room rate also includes a breakfast.

All restaurants and train station and buses are in walking distance. Internet cafe's are close by.

St. George in Penang is a nice place to visit. It's an overnight journey from KL by train (you ride to Butterworth and cross the waterways to St. George). Lots of places to eat in St. George.

While in KL check out local transport by commuter trains. Ride the monorail at night, you can see the city lights, light up the city. Ride the fastest train from Sentral KL station to the KL airport, it is non-stop. Malayasians are friendly people. On Fridays, downtown is more congested because of Friday prayers and lunch after worship. Again, people are very friendly and courteous.

Happy travels!

Cheers,

Ernie

Hi Somit

1st of all, let me WELCOME you to my beloved country, the beautiful MALAYSIA :-) I stay in Kuala Lumpur which is about 60km from the Sepang International F1 Circuit. Have been there once when my Thailand friends flew in for this spectacular event.

Here are some info for your reference. Again, this is extracted from the F1 website. I am sure you have already read it. Anyway, don't mind sharing with all of you again here....

WHY GO MALAYSIA?

Malaysia offers a fascinating mix of urban sophistication and rural charm. The cities - and particularly the capital Kuala Lumpur (KL) - are developing extremely quickly, but the countryside has maintained its innocence. The people continue to farm the land and the sea, as they have for centuries.

“Malaysia is a fantastic place,” says Ferrari sporting director Jean Todt. “I love spicy food, so when I'm in Kuala Lumpur, I go and visit one of the local restaurants in Petaling Street or Chinatown. I also like to have massages in one of the traditional spas, or go shopping near the Twin Towers.”

The bulk of KL’s development has occurred since it hosted the 1998 Commonwealth Games, in accordance with the government’s ‘Vision 2020’, which is for Malaysia to be a fully-developed country by 2020.

The Sepang Circuit is in keeping with that vision. It was built in 1998 and, so good were its facilities, it became the inspiration for all of Formula One’s subsequent new tracks.

At 452 metres, Petronas Towers in the centre of Kuala Lumpur remains the world’s tallest twin-towered public building.

TRANSPORT

Over 50 international airlines fly to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which is five kilometres from Sepang Circuit and 60 kilometres south of the city.

A train service operates from the airport into Kuala Lumpur (25 minutes only), though there is no train service to the track. Hiring a car is advisable, particularly if you want to visit the coast or surrounding countryside, but a taxi from KLIA to the track is also an inexpensive option. Taxis are also the best way to get around Kuala Lumpur itself. Book a package.

USEFUL TIPS

Huge grandstand capacity at the Sepang International Circuit makes for great viewing, particularly in the double-fronted stand opposite the pits. However, general admission is a good option as well because some of the best corners on the track - Turn 5, for example - are only accessible by foot. All tickets are competitively priced in an effort to make the race as affordable as possible to local people and visitors alike.

Malaysia’s weather is generally glorious, though 70 percent humidity is not unusual, so take lots of water with you to the track. Book a race ticket

WHERE TO GO?

The Golden Triangle in the centre of KL is home to the best shops and restaurants, but to balance your experiences of the city, take the time to visit Chinatown or Little India. The bustling markets, food stalls and hawker restaurants give a colourful insight into indigenous living Malaysian-style.

You can find surprising tranquillity in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. The green square of Dataran Merdeka was once the centre of the old, colonial city and is now a place where shoppers and office workers go to relax.

WHERE TO STAY?

There is every type of accommodation available in Kuala Lumpur and hotel prices are modest by western standards. For the race, however, you could also try staying outside the city.

Most of the Formula One fraternity stays at the airport hotel for convenience, but the coast is only a 40-minute commute from the track and the luxurious resorts of Putrajaya are a short drive inland.

”There are two hotels that I recommend,” says Todt. ”The Mandarin Oriental, which is just a stone's throw from the Twin Towers, and the Carcosa Hotel, which is very exclusive and colonial-style.” Book a hotel

EXTENDED STAY

There are literally hundreds of holiday destinations available to you in Malaysia. You can stay in Kuala Lumpur, head to the beaches and temples of Penang or the island of Langkawi, or even the rain forests of the Kinabalu National Park.

“I suggest people visit the east coast of Malaysia,” says Todt. ""That area boasts some of the most pristine beaches in the whole of south-east Asia. There are also the mountains and jungles for the adventurous - again, east Malaysia is the best place to go.” Book a package

Ernie is right, YMCA is a good bargain and it is within walking distance to the transport hub of KL. 5 star Hotels like The KL Hilton and LeMeridien Hotel are located here at KL Sentral.

Back to hotel accommodation, let me know if you need help. I can help you to get a 5 star hotel in KL paying only USD70 which I am currently enjoying as a corporate client.

Will update you again from time to time on the fun things to do in KL :-)

Cheers!
Michelle

Thanks Michelle...
I have been reading a bit about Malaysia and how I should plan my holiday there. KL sounds good and I hope to spend a week.
Normally I would have planned much later but I understand that hotels are packed during F1.
Iam ok with a 3-5 star...as long it is central, good and clean...and most importantly lively. Any suggestions? Someone recommended Concorde....is it any good.
Hope to continue hearing from you...

PS. I assume you are the one in the pink saree

Ashish...my bookings were done on the internet. Process was quite efficient. Let me know if you intend to be there...atleast one known face amongst the zillions...lol

Hey Somit

So you will be at the Sepang F1 2007. Great !!! I planned to be there with a friend too, but only on the final race day @ 8th April...let's see if we could meet up somewhere :-)

Concorde Hotel is fine..I have organised several company events there, good food and good service, value for money though, no complaint so far :-) Furthermore, The KL Monorail Station and Hard Rock Cafe is next to the hotel....Oh yes! Petronas Twin Towers and other food / entertainment / shopping outlets are just within walking distance. I must say it is a good choice!

However, you may want to check out other hotels nearby which are also offering very competitive rates. Check out this link for reference http://www.holidaycity.com/kualalumpurhotels/index.html

Let me know if you need further info.

Cheers!
Michelle

P/s : you are right Somit...I'm in the pink saree :-)

Thanks for your nice comments Somit :-)

Hmmmmm....back to your question "Not to be missed things" in KL......well, there are so many actually but I would only give my Top 10 list....can't speak for others though as different people might have different interests....

1. KLCC - This massive project includes the 88-storey Petronas Twin Towers and Suria KLCC Shopping Mall. A few other attractions are housed here: the Petronas Philharmonic Concert Hall, Petronas Art Gallery and Petrosains (Discovery Centre). The towers are linked by a sky bridge, which is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sundays, 8.30am-5.00pm.

2. KL Tower - Get bird's eye view of the city from this forth tallest concrete tower in the world, or dine at its stylish Revolving Restaurant.

3. Sultan Abdul Samad Building - Constructed in 1897, the building is reminiscent of London's Big Ben but with Moorish influences. It once housed the Colonial Secretariat Offices, but is now home to the Supreme and High Courts of Malaysia. Merdeka (Independence) Square is located here.

4. Genting Skyway - Take a relaxing, scenic ride up to Genting Highland on skyway cable car from the Gotong Jaya Station. The Awana Genting Skyway provide breathtaking views of the surrounding hills at a comfortable speed that will get you to the top of the hill where Genting City of Entertainment is. The cable car is claimed to be the fastest in the world and longest in South East Asia. Check this out at http://www.genting.com.my

5. Bintang Walk - This lively street, in the very heart of Kuala Lumpur's Golden Triangle is a shopper's paradise.

6. Sunway Lagoon Resort - Experience adventure and excitement all in one place. More info at http://www.sunwaylagoon.com.my

7. Chinatown - It is also called Petaling Street is a good place for fantastic bargains.

8. Central Market - you can find beautiful Malaysian arts and handicrafts here.

9. National Museum - interesting info on the history and culture of Malaysia can be found here.

10. The Heritage Street (next to Sheraton Imperial Hotel) is where the fun and trendy pubs are located. Another happening place that I would suggest is the award winning Luna Bar. Rum Jungle is a pretty cool place for a drink too.

Of course you must also sample a good variety and delicious local food here. Yong tau foo, satay, char kueh teow, roti John, rendang daging, nasi lemak are some of the local dishes not to be missed !!!

More info for places to visit in Malaysia can be found at http://www.tourism.gov.my

Cheers!

Hi friends!
We planning to go to Malaysia in July from Bombay. Stay is booked at the RCI resorts. I'd like to know if I must book air tickets now, or should wait for a while. Currently round trip tickets on Air India and Malaysian Airlines are around 45000 Rs for 2 adults. Is that a good price to pick up tickets?

Also thanks for the tips, shall be keeping a watch on this thread for more.

I booked my KL - Mumbai - KL ticket at RM1,400 (including taxes) through the travel agent yesterday. This is the MAS TRAVEL FAIR rate). Normal published rate is RM1,820 which is shown on MAS website still.

round trips are available only when originating in Malaysia, I tried tricking the system by putting in dates for KL-Mumbai later than that for Mumbai-KL, says that you cannot do that. Anyway, am enquiring with some travel agents here too...if you could enquire with your agent about 5 round trip tickets from Chennai to KL and PM me the rates inclusive of taxes, i shall be very grateful!

When are you here in Bombay'/
