Had a booking at Cherai Beach Resort. This is on Vypen Island about 34 km from Cochin. We had pick up and reached the hotel by 2.30pm. The resort is located on the backwater and very tastefully done, with the backwater coming in the resort. There are cottages on silts,on the lake n each wiht a different theme. Our cottage had an open air shower wiht a coconut tree growing in it. Good veg food ,though choice is limited and no alcohol,as it is a health resrt. We had the ayurvedic massage, good but expensive. Wondering if it is worth it. Package of 2 nights incuded a sight seeing tour and a boat ride on the back water. Fort Kochi was an interesting tour. Especailly the chinese fishing nets. We reached ther at sunset and its a photographers paradise. Right in fromt of the resort is the beach.Clean and safe for swimmming. So you have the sunrise at the backwater in formt of you and the senset at the beach just outside the hotel. What more can you ask for... Highly recommended..Much better then cochin city unless absolute necessary.
Next stop was Thekkady.. We had booked at Carmelia Heaven ,a planation resort about 25 km from Thekkady. We were in a tree house wiht glass windows all round. A real experience, though a bit scary at night!! Its a 55 acre plantation and they have about 20 rooms and cottages, spread out. They have one hour plantation tour also and seeing the trees of elaichi, cocoa, coffeee, tea and cloves was intersting. Again good food ,but limited choice. Thekkady is about an hour away. We took the 2 hour boat ride, but it was a disappointment. No sighings at all.Not even elephants. Just a lake tour. We later found ,that there is a bamboo rafting from 8 am ot 5 pm ,where they take only 20 persons nad go deep in the jungle ,so the chnaces for sightings are better nad it is an experience by itself. Bt you need prioir boookings, especilly in season. We had lunch at Spice Village, since we had heard so much about it. It is nice, but nothing extra ordinary to justify their pricing. Shopping at the town outside THekkady for spices was fun and highly recommneded,as prices there are half of that in Mumbai. We preferred the peace and quiet of the plantation then the hustle and bustle of Thekkady. Our last stop was Allepy-the backwater capital . We had booked at the Kayaloram Heritage Resort. This was on the back water. Its a small 12 cottage resort. We found Kumarakom is about 45 km away from Allepy. It has become famous for the resorts built on its lake and especially Coconut Lagoon. But that is on a lake and for backwaters, the visitors are bought to Allepy for the backwater cruise. So Allepy is cheaper than the resorts at Kumarakom and right on the backwaters..So you decide... We had the lake facing cottage and were greeted with the sunrise early morning. Truely Gods own abode. Visited the town for soem local Kerala saree shopping. THe last night was on the house boat. THis sailed the backwaters of Allepy. We were informed that there is 780 km of backwaters at Allepy wiht about 70 isalnds interconnected by the back waters. THe stay in the house boat, bought us close to life at the water edge. Here there were schools wiht school boats to ferry students across the water. There were churches, temples and houses all along the banks. A very differnt experience and worth seeing.
At the end of the 8 day trip,we felt like we had been visitors to God's home!!!
A very beautiful place and a must see for all!!!!!!
