Vijay Nayak | | What’s the most unusual meat (dish) you ever eaten? I have traveled many countries but being not quite adventurous about tasting different kinds of meats, have restricted myself to umpteen dishes in Chicken, Fish and Lamb in my regular eating besides veggies.
I have been to all sorts of restaurants here in India and in SEA, Gulf, Europe, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and have seen all kinds’ meats being served like Horsemeat, Deer, Rabbit, varieties of birds and strange looking seafood but have stuck only to varieties in meat that I eat always.
Do share what unusual non-veg dish you have eaten, what meat was it and also where did you eat it?
For me it was a frog leg a long time ago for me at a Chinese joint in Manipal where I did my engineering. Did not like it one bit, though. Private Reply to Vijay Nayak |

Gautam | | Guinea Pig – Unfortunately not. Veal Testicles – Oh yeah! Hell ya! Rocky Mountain Oysters is what they were called. [San Diego] Spicy Beef Penis – It wasn’t spicy. The version I ate was cold, clammy and pickled. [Singapore] Tongue Polonaise – Used to have an Anglo-Indian classmate who’d bring the best tongue sandwiches. Also available at Lusitania Cold Store. [Bangalore] Braised Smothered Chitlins – Yes. Unfortunately I have. Give me regular tripe in green peppers any day. [East Central Los Angeles] Pig Foot Milanese – Yes, but it was more knuckles and trotters. Absolutely fabulous. [New Orleans] Balut (Fertilized Duck Eggs With Embryo) – Yes. Better than you’d imagine so long as you dip in Nam Pla. Other comestibles ingested simultaneously were spiders, lizards and scorpions. [Bangkok] Les Rognons De Veau À La Moutarde (Kidneys) – Yes, but tava fried with masala. Also available at Bombay Kebabs as is brain, liver and udder. [Bangalore] Duck Tongues In Wine Sauce – Nope. Duck/Goose liver pate, yes. [Bangalore] Chicken Assholes – It’s technically the vent. And it fries very well, it’s only fat. Also yummy is chicken feet curry which is a Tamilian speciality. [Bangalore]

Mayuri Sharrma. Writer. Tarot Card Reader. | | Though eating my own spoken words would qualify as an unusual dish, I have been eating them so regularly that they are usual fare now;)
The most unusual dish I have tried so far was an excellent roast Duck with a tangy apple, walnut and something-I-don’t-remember sauce. Unusual for me because I am a strictly chicken and fish person who has only ventured as far as Oysters and Calamari so far.

Shalaka Paradkar | | The first unusual thing I was coaxed to try is the Bengali delicacy muri ghanto: rice with fish head, it's delicious. Also tried balut (once was enough) and pigs' feet (ditto). My kind Chinese neighbour made me a huge pot of chicken wine when I was sick. It had a lot of bits n parts that I didn't want to know more about, excellent curative properties though. Suman Tripathy | | Shalaka, Dittoo here 2 ! When first time, i was offered 'moori ghanto' ; i didnt feel like eating it when i was told that it is made wit fish head. But when i tasted it, i flipped 4 it. Another was 'fried blood' ! For a puja, when the goat 'balli' was done, i am told that the fresh blood that comes is collected and it coagulates. Then it is cut in2 small pieces and fried, tastes like liver fry ! Private Reply to Suman Tripathy |

in the unusual: horse sashimi (raw horse slivers served on ice) which are delicious. in a restaurant in osaka. deer brain done in fine herbs. served at a game park in mauratius. venison pickle was a regular while growing up. blue bull steaks done indian style with a tandoor. various bird meats whale meat: which is disgusting, its only blubber. octopus heads: cooked in slight batter. they are divine. chicken feet soup: it got me. meat was fine but the idea did not go down well. buffalo meat: nepali style dog: nagaland. its good. as long as you had not named it and played with it earlier. cant remember but there were few others...will add...

Vijay Nayak | | Add more, Arjun? You already had a 'whale' of an opportunity! :) Looking forward, anyways! Most things that can move around, swim or fly seem already covered here the posts up to now! But I am sure more in store which can be chronicled into an almanac! Private Reply to Vijay Nayak |

Gautam | | How about an animal fetus, balut excluded? It's apparently an Anglo-Indian delicacy.

Rhea | | the most out of the way thing I've eaten is horse meat. My sis in Law had got somethin slices of smoked horse meat from Europe... I loved it!! I had japanese preserved octopus lying in my fridge for a long time...had no clue what to do with it...a friend has taken them, will cook it for us soon.
I guess I've led a relatively 'conservative' food life :)Private Reply to Rhea |
