Hello Travel Lovers!

Me and a few friends planning to drive down to Coorg from Bangalore.

It would be great if you guys could suggest some must see places. And also some places/eateries that we could stop over during the drive.

We are planning to use one of the Homestays in Coorg..any suggestions on this?

When our office went on its trip to Coorg, we decided not to make it a sight-seeing trip, but to make it an experience. We stayed at a place called "Shanti Estate" this is about 12k out of Cooorg Town, atop a hill. A coffee and vanilla farm, this has two lovely cottages set in a valley with a little duck pond added to the effect. Perfect for lovely treks and coupled with a friendly old couple as hosts, this is quite an idyllic place. As I remember, it isn't very expensive either. Priced around 800 per head (a couple of years back) and negotiable quite a bit depending on the number of people traveling, this is very cost effective too. They are listed in Outlook Traveler's Getaway's from Bangalore book. Check it out.

On the food front, we had found Shanti Estate to be the best, making home cooked meals. All other places we checked were a disappointment. Try and avoid all the seemingly good hotels and definitely the ones that have an 'International' in their name. Seems to be synonymous with bad food in Coorg.

Do visit Tala Kaveri while there. Other than that, my recommendation would be to chill out and make it an experience in spending time together instead of making it a sight seeing trip. Coorg is a lovely place to relax. And relaxing too, if you let soak in the place and allow it to relax you.

Hope you have a wonderful trip

You can contact Shanti Estate on vgopal31@yahoo.co.in or call 223690 (forget the STD Code). And I made a mistake with the tariff. It used to be Rs 200 per head (not Rs 800).

Places to visit (if you want to make it a sight seeing trip) would include:

* Taka Kaveri (birth of Kaveri river. quite picturesque)
* Abbi Falls
* Madikeri fort
* Raja's Seat (also called the sunset point)
* Lots of trekking routes. Take a local guide. The people at Shanti Estate would be able to help.

Just got back from a conference from coorg. I would suggest not to miss the Tibetan monastery. Its beautiful. Taal Kaveri while it used to be picturesque has turned out to be more of a pilgrim kind of place and not nice anymore. I would recommed stopping at a town called channapatna where you get lovely wooden toys. Its on the way from bangalore to coorg. Have a good trip!!!
