I have a degree in HR but have never worked HR in the civilian sector. Being a supervisor in the military we do hit on the perhiperial of the HR career field. Through my MBA I am being introduced to terms that I never hear, such as COBRA. Any suggestions comments would be greatly appreciated.

Ed,

First, let me welcome you to Ryze and to this network. I hope you find it valuable.

I suggest you start by joining a professional association like SHRM, the Society for Human Resources Management. Through them you can access a wealth of information, including access to training programs on a variety of issues. There are also professional certifications of various types in Human Resources that you could pursue, and studying for those would expose you to the many laws, regulations, and operational best practices that you'll need to know.

Thanks, I have checked into SHRM and there is a local chapter in Ft Walton Beach. I will contact them and get info, thanks for the advice. For testing and certification what area of HR should I focus on first or are the test comprehensive?

Edward,
Yes the tests are comprehensive so you have to know about all areas of HR. SHRM has study aids that you can use to study for the tests. If you have any other HR questions you can PM me if you like.
