Hi Members,

I am thankful for your view point on intelligent video surveillance.

There is something more food for thought.

24x7x365 Automated Business Continuity Solutions with Disaster Management and Recovery - a need or a luxury. If it is a need, then what is the market size and who are the target audience. And if it is a luxury, why it is so.
Regards,
Ray

LOL, it's a luxury until you need it, then when you need it, it's too late unless you didn't consider it a luxury.
You need to ask your self, and your clients how long can you/they go with out the critical data that runs your/ their business....

Business continuity must encompass much more than the ICT aspects of a business. It begins with the core business and how to persevere in the face of catastrophic events. Manufacturers need to look to the facilities, equipment, raw materials, and personnel necessary to keep manufacturing; service providers need to think in terms of the resources required to deliver their services; transportation companies need to focus on their vehicles, depots, and terminals; and so it goes.

Automating all of this will prove to be one heck of a challenge. Many companies have failed to understand the critical paths and single points of failure, let alone planned for disasters. Moving to automated recovery - I don't see it for most of them.

ICT is probably the most prepared function for BCS/DR in any company. It is inherent in most of our training. The problem is that ICT is often not in the critical path. Resources spent on ICT DR are often better applied to other areas when the true demands of BCS are considered.

If you look at most small and medium size businesses they can't quantify how much money it costs them when their phone system goes down. Companies with 500 employees or less tend to be less sophisticated on disaster recovery and view it as a luxury. Unlike say a call center which knows how much a minute of down time costs them. At the very least every company should have services that take care of internet and phones when a disaster hits so their is no loss of business continuity.

I believe that is why VOIP is so popular right now because of the built in protection against disasters and the relatively low cost of entry.
