AT&T and Qualcomm has entered into a very lucrative agreement. They are going to use Qualcomms MediaFlow to deliver mobile TV to subscribers. this can be a good boon for Qualcomm with a boost to their services.

Verizon was working on this as well. Do you think AT&T has a one up on Verizon using this technology? The article is

Neat stuff, looks like Jacobs and his boys have been busy...

It's interesting because as you know Qualcomm & Dr Viterbi created CDMA and Verizon is a CDMA service provider while ATT/Cingular is a GSM house.

The utilization of the 700 Mhz frequency is also the UHF TV channel 55, I'm curiuos to see how this will shake out.

One-up? If I recall, Verizon is going to roll their service out several months before AT&T.

Yes, perhaps Verizon will roll out in some markets faster but AT&T has the strength of Qualcomm on their side now. Not to mention that just becuase you are first to market does not mean that your position will be strongest. So in actuality AT&T will have a good advantage over Verizon. It will be interesting as John said to see how this all plays out.

Am I just getting old, is it a generation thing, or is there anybody else out there who just doesn't see why people would want to see their favorite TV show on a 2-inch square screen? As a fad, yeah sure, but to actually watch content, day after day, hour after hour, long term, on such a small display...I just don't buy it.

Naaaahhhhhhhh you are not getting old at all Ira. However there is a market for such content. Those who travel business class especially international would find it handy. Especially when the movie on the flight is very boring

Doing VoD on a flight isn't difficult - it won't be too long before you can pick your films and content in departures from a very large menu. All the necessary technology works, it just takes a while in the airline world for these things to get approved.

There was a poll recently reported in New Scientist which said that the demand for video on mobile phones in the US was only about 4% of users. So no, like Ira, I don't believe that will drive the 3G market. A big part of that is because the operators are greedy - they want to pocket a huge chunk of the revenues from content which makes it expensive for consumers and unattractive for content providers. Docomo's i-mode is a much better model - they provide the infrastructure and take 10% of the revenues for any services, which makes it very attractive for service providers.
