Robert Taylor Book Will Hit The Market!Views: 7931

Linda J. Alexander http://www.lindajalexander.net

Hello All:

I started this network based on my conviction that Hollywood & politics walk hand in hand, & have done so for about as long as we've been a society obsessed w/not only films but the "movie royalty" that make them.

That conviction came about as a result of years of intense research for my newest book, RELUCTANT WITNESS: ROBERT TAYLOR, HOLLYWOOD, & COMMUNISM, which was put under contract in late '06. Finally, after many years of digging into the topic & lives of Hollywood stars of yesteryear, I've been rewarded w/a publication date:

January 18, 2008!!

I didn't make the '07 holiday selling season, but I will be able to promote the book based on the next presidential election . . . Taylor had the same political connections as his best friend, Ronald Reagan. It's going to be a wild ride & I can't wait! I've already started sorting out promo options & now that I have a delivery date--it's like having a baby!--I can go full-force. FINALLY. I'm ready to roll!

Now I'm scurrying for a cover photo. Robert Taylor was the "George Clooney" of Hollywood in the Golden Era of movies; there's even a slight resemblance between the men. Despite thousands of pictures of him, almost all are owned by photo distribution services & will cost a great deal of money to secure rights to use. It's a happy problem, though!! ; >

If anyone has suggestions on how to get such rights w/o taking out a 2nd mortgage on my home, I'd appreciate your thoughts. This part of the process is the author's responsibility . . . considered part of the manuscript package, so it's my job to secure needed photos.

Blessings, all -- Linda

Linda,

I like this picture of Robert Taylor.

Best for you and your new book!

Ronald Reagan eulogized his friend, correct?

Ron

Ron:

I LOVE that photo. It's fantastic & really embodies Taylor's spirit. Something like it would be a good cover shot . . . still shares that socio-political aspect of his persona while showing him to be a Hollywood type.

It, however, has much the same issues as others of the same ilk. It's owned by a photo service that requires a sizeable chunk of change to buy rights to use it. That's the problem I'm up against. I found another (in a newspaper article) of him strolling down Constitution Ave. after he testified in front of the HUAC in 1947. He's flanked by policeman & a horde of people following him. The Capitol dome shows prominently in the background. It's perfect for what the book portrays of him but so far I've not found a quality copy, or been able to learn who owns rights. It was taken by a long-defunct news service, but their photos are supposedly now owned by a big conglomerate. I'm working on trying to find this one.

GOOD news, though, came yesterday via e-mail. Taylor's son, Terry, offered to send me a family photo album, in which there are many shots worthy of a book cover. He's packaging it up this weekend to send to me. I'll make copies of all photos that could work--I'll need inside-the-book shots, as well--& then send the album back to Terry.

And yes, Ron, Reagan gave Taylor's eulogy. Before he started his speech, he was crying & told Nancy that he didn't think he could go through w/it. He did, stopping periodically to quell his emotions. His daughter said it was one of the only times he'd been known to cry in public.

Wow, what a great gift; an album of his photos to select from. How did you meet his son? Does he look like Robert Taylor?

Christina:

I met Taylor's son & daughter when I started research in 1993. I've been at this nearly 15 yrs! Way-back-then, I went to Los Angeles to do interviews & Tessa invited me to a birthday party for Terry given by their mother. It was a real thrill to visit their house overlooking L.A., near the Reagan home. Beautiful.

I've done 2 conferences in Robert Taylor's hometown of Beatrice, NE, one as a featured speaker & one as the keynote speaker. Terry & his mother were there for the 1st, & both kids & their mother attended the 2nd. They were wonderful experiences & included some of Taylor's extended family members & a few college friends who've, sadly, since passed away. I'm fortunate to have met them early on.

Does Terry look like his dad? Strikingly so. Actually, Tessa probably looks more like him. Both are extremely attractive. Taylor was called "The Man With the Perfect Face." The mother of his children, Ursula Thiess who was brought over from Germany by Howard Hughes, was dubbed "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World" before she ever met Taylor.

They had no choice but to have 2 gorgeous offspring!

Linda,

I would wish you the best of luck, but somehow I feel you won't need that wish. This book has bestseller written all over it.

15 years is a long time. I am getting to know the feeling. One of the books that I thought I would do in 9 months has snowballed into a three year project and still going strong. But, the ride is fun as I am sure your 15 years of doing this book has been.

Now the time is approaching to let this baby go out into the world and shine.

Remember us little people when you are on the bestseller list.

I had no idea wh Robert Taylor was even though I have watched his movies as a little kid. Now I am learning more about him and Hollywood and Politis!
If not for Linda, I would have gone on my merry way as an artist painting pictures not knowing that once, America was in danger of being 'attacked' by Communism! Horrible if it took over your magnificent country!

I have a new respect for the late Ronald Reagan.

I hope I can get your books here in little ole New Zealand!

How exciting that you are getting the photos from Terry... Kinda a Woweee and a Zoweee is called for, don't you think?
:P

Fred:

Thx for the kind words. I'm repeating that mantra, "Reluctant Witness is a NYT Bestseller. . . ." over & over & over. The words you use tend to be the words that come back to you, & the more I fill my mind this way, the better it becomes!

Don't EVER worry about how long it takes to get a project born, so to speak. The timing, if you're truly working at it, tends to work itself out. When it's right -- it's right. And yes, I agree, the ride to getting there is a great part of the process. I'm going to miss this not being a part of my everyday life, but then the promo work will take over FT. Yet another aspect.

Tell us about your next project, Fred.

Thx for your note, & for joining our network. Robert Taylor IS one of those faces . . . you don't necessarily know the name (not yet, anywho!) but after you see his face, you know you've seen him in the movies for many years. That's how I came to be aware of who he was.

I have the pictures now from Terry. Wonderful! I'm up to my ears in scanning. Each one is more beautiful than the next.
