Does Travel Expand / Deepen Perspective?Views: 897

Does traveling expand or deepen the perspective of the traveler?

Does it constrict anything in anyway?

Between Traveling and Reading, which one is more effective to broaden the horizon? (not referring to technical or specific knowledge).

What’s your take?

Ashis

Perspective... of / about what? Life in general?

Its such a big word isn't it.

Frankly i think these cant be compared at all.
Traveling and reading. The former is a sensorial experience, the latter compels you to imagine.

Do they stimulate thinking and imagination? they both do I guess.

Every new information has the potential to manifest into a mind widening subject. Depends on each, how we decipher it. What kind of person are you? The one who takes a pause after reading a page and thinks about it. Or a traveler who just sits down and becomes a part of the setting, absorbs more richness...

so i say its both... and its personal

I think they are complementary-as you read so you travel.
If I read and pause to think and re-read and compare-so will I be when I travel
I have seen people run through a place-go anywhere and there are two kinds of travellers-those who want to say oh ya I have been there and the other who is there to see, understand, comprehend, absorb, delight and open their minds
same with reading-
fianlly they both place the world at your doorstep;they help open your mind to the universe;you 'know' it all from your soul

I agree with Usha, it would be ideal if someone can pay me for reading and travelleing...

But if one has to choose, I would prefer travelling, as that is a more complete experience as it happens in the physicak world, while reading makes me travel in mind. The adventure of travelling, the uncertainity and unpredictability when you wander in the no-wheres of the world is as high as it can get.

Next best thing of travelling is reading the material.:-)). It will also prepare to practice the future for travelling .:-)).

I recall while I was in Bombay almost 9 years ago, I got into several local commuter trains and had great time just riding them all over. I didn't even bother to read about the local trains in books or schedules. CST station was my hub. Just hop on them.:-)).

Ofcourse, I had the Indrail pass.:-)).

Cheers,

Ernie

not unless you stay at a place for a longish time and interact with locals

Does traveling expand or deepen the perspective of the traveler?

I think it does, especially if you are on your own and have to interact with locals for everything.

I think traveling expands one's perspective provided one travels with an open mind.

A completely planned itinerary leaves little to excite the senses; a loosely planned and flexible schedule allows one to experience the local culture - people, food, music, local art, lesser-known locations and traditions...that's enrichening.

As far as comparing Traveling and Reading is concerned, I feel they are complementary. You read and then you travel with a more informed mind; you travel and then when you read, your imagination runs far and deep rich from the traveling experience.

Cheers!

Rajeev Goenka.
Both go hand in hand...
If you read up before going , you enhance the experience.
And it all depends also on the kind of travelling you do.
If you just rush from place to place ,then there is no time to soak in the atmosphere.
But if you are leisurely seeing the place, then you can really enjoy.

In most cases traveling makes people more open-minded, more tolerant and respectful of differences. Reading makes them more knowledgeable but not necessarily "diversity friendly". Please don' t get me wrong though, I am not discounting the importance of reading, just insisting on the role of direct interaction in having a tolerant attitude in general.

So happy traveling :)
