dear fellow travel lovers :)

i just wanted to share photos from my recent trip to kashmir india! :-)

when people told us that kashmir is beautiful, we didn't really expect to see what we did. beautiful is an understatement! they don't call kashmir the asian
switzerland for nothing! in fact, we found out lotsa european championship skiers love to go there for skiing in the mountains during winter. and they have pony rides in the countryside during other seasons. the nagin and dal lakes are absolutely stunning and crystal clear! :-)

anyway, these photos are taken by my husband, alex and they have been uploaded into his personal photo-gallery. you can view them here:

http://www.alexmoi.net/travel/kashmir/

hope you enjoy viewing them! :-)

by the way, you need macromedia flash player in order to view the photo slideshow.

if you don't have it installed in your browser yet, you can download it from here:

http://www.soft32.com/download_500.html

cheers and happy viewin. let me know what you think of the photos ok...

julie :-)

Lovely pictures of the lakes and Himalaya mountains Julie. Also, the Shikara (boats)are very artistic. It give me found memories when I visited Srinagar some 8 years ago.

The weather is lovely!

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Ernie

thanks, VA! i'm sure you won't be disappointed. :)

i heard from our guide that in spring/summer, the gardens are full of flowers, and the nagin and dal lakes are full of waterlilies and lotus. it will be a different view indeed.

if u need any contacts for houseboat accommodation or the tour guide, just private message me and i'd be glad to pass mine on to you as their service was excellent. :)

our trip to kashmir was wonderful. the only part that we were disappointed with was the airlines and the airport. as there is no international airport in kashmir, we flew to delhi international airport, and then on to kashmir domestic airport the next day.

we took indian airlines (different from air india) there and jet airways back.

jet airways was very professional but i don't recommend indian airlines though, especially for first time visitors, cos they were delayed for 3 hours without any announcements, and also, they combined 2 flights without announcements, and there were quite a few passengers who were left stranded as a result. seems that the airline was overbooked as well, that's why. appalling!! :(

so make sure you choose a reliable airline for your trip.

VA Abraham
This is the information I have about the seasons in Kashmir.....

Months Season Weather

2nd March to 21st June Spring Very pleasant with rains in the

city between March and May.

Snowfall sometimes on Mountains

21st June to 21st Sept Summer Pleasant, sometimes slight rainfall.

21st Sept to 21st Dec Autumn Pleasant, sometime it rains.

21st Dec to 2nd March Winter Coolest weather with heavy

snowfalls

SEASON:

Best season for visiting Kashmir is May – July and again September – October. Winter tourism begins with the first snowfall generally by mid December and lasts till March during which skiing and other snow sports are possible at Gulmarg.

hi karthik

i have been there during winter. unless you wanna go skiing or sleighing, i would recommend end spring or summer... like maybe may onwards... cos the gardens will be full of flowers, the countryside saffron fields, and both nageen and dal lakes will be full of waterlilies and lotus! it will be a beautiful sight! :)

cheers

hi there... yup, winter is nice if you want to see the snow and enjoy skiing or sleing. i went to gulmarg in february. it is absolutely beautiful during that time. and very cold too!! ;-P

the only drawback is there are no flowers out during that time... and it may be a bit cold for pony rides in the countryside. that's why the next time i go to kashmir, i will try summer. haha... :-)

hi again fellow travel lovers :)

anyway, since quite a lot of people have messaged me requesting for the houseboat details, i might as well post it up here as well instead of replying individually.

hope that is ok...

we stayed at new mavis houseboat. it is on nageen lake, and not dal lake.

personally, i prefer nageen to dal as it's less crowded and the houseboats are newer and in better condition. dal lake is closer to the road, hence, may be noisier also.

the owner of the houseboat is abdul, the elderly guy in the photos. anyways, if you wanna stay there, you can contact his son:

rauf jan
tel: 91.194.2423685
email: rshangloo@hotmail.com or rshangloo@rediffmail.com

i would like to rate them (lonely planet style... haha ;p) as follows (10 being maximum):

accommodation - 9.5/10
ambience - 10/10
scenery - 10/10
location - 9/10
cleanliness - 8.5/10
service - 9/10
food - 8.5/10

overall very good - excellent. :)

i've also posted more kashmir photos (these ones taken by me instead of my husband) at a photography forum. you can view them here:

http://www.lensamalaysia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3932

there are 6 pages of photos altogether so you would need to click on the subsequent pages as well in order to get to view all of them.

my husband's photos are at his personal website in case you missed them amongst all the postings:

http://www.alexmoi.net/travel/kashmir/

cheers
julie :)
