Have you ever been a guest on a talk radio program? If so, was the interview conducted in person or over the phone? I am interested in hearing from folks who have done talk radio interviews over-the-phone. I have done it both ways. But, I am interested in doing something a little different between now and Father's Day Weekend in June. I want to see if I can get Ryzers around the world to be interviewed on talk radio about a particular subject. That subject is "Middletown Days" in Middletown, CA. Thanks to a program like Skype, this should be a no-brainer. A Ryzer on Skype in Atlanta could just as easily be interviewed by Atlanta's WSB Radio as he could on San Francisco's KGO Radio. In fact, my Ryzer friend in Australia and New Zealand could just as easily be interviewed by both of those stations. The only possible problem is the time difference between locations. But, could people calling from Australia and New Zealand to an Atlanta radio station positively impact the turnout of a festival taking place in Northern California? I say "Yes." Why? Because today more than ever, news travels fast all over the world.

If you would like to join high school students in this extremely noble effort to power network a western festival, join Project-Middletown.

I have done a few hundred radio interviews by phone and run a service for those interested in using radio interviews for promotion.

The most important thing is to think about your audience first. Would an audience in Australia be interested in learning about an event in California? Probably not. Your topic must fill some need for that listener.

Radio producers/hosts also want to talk to experts on a topic. I'm not sure strangers worldwide could be called upon to be good interview subjects for "Middletown Days" if they've never attended.

You are doing a great thing by thinking creatively. But I don't think this particular approach would be too effective for your needs.

Good luck!

Lorilynn,

Here is what happened last year. I got 30 high school students to write letters to their favorite personality at the Fox News Channel requesting a visit to Middletown, CA for its annual western festival and parade. Of course, I wanted them to bring a camera crew. The camera crew did not come, but a Fox News correspondent did come. He even addressed the parade crowd on behalf of the network. Nothing like this had ever happened for the small town.

It took more to make this happen than just 30 students each writing a letter. How we sent the letters I think mattered as well as how we followed up. All the letters were sent in one big padded envelope to the Investor Relations Dept. of the network. Each student letter was in its own separate envelope in that padded envelope. A letter from me was also enclosed explaining the entire package. It was NOT in an envelope - so it would be read first. I requested the other letters be distributed and that an annual report on Fox News be sent to the high school.

Well, nothing happened right away due to that mailing. I then got the local county marketing association to send a press kit on the county to Roger Ailes, chairman of the Fox News Channel to show support for the student effort. Nothing happened after that, either. It was not until I requested Ryzers around the world contact the network via email or using the network's toll-free phone number that Fox actually called me.

Consequently, I am of the opinion that if Ryzers around the world can influence a network to take specific action, they can also move local radio stations as well. When I lived in Atlanta, GA I actually was able to convince San Francisco's KSFO Radio to do a phone interview with me. What did I do to make that happen? I just sent an email message.

Fred,

Yes, one person can make a difference. But, when you connect one passionate person to another passionate person to another...and so on, amazing things can really start to happen. Just suppose a hand full of Ryzers were to contact just three well-known radio stations and ask to be interviewed for a period of say 1o minutes about a small town called "Middletown, CA" which is trying to move itself forward and plans to have a festival on June 16th of this year. Do you think that a 10-minute radio interview on a radio station in San Francisco with a guy from Australia could impact the festival which is located two hours north of San Francisco? I do. In fact, if a person in New Zealand were to be interviewed by a Florida radio station I think the impact of that interview would still be felt in Middletown during its festival time. Why? Because we are more and more becoming a global village. What we say, think and feel is spread worldwide. While that is not always a good thing, I do believe there are times when it can truly be a blessing. And, helping little Middletown, CA have a success annual festival is one of those times.
