Kristin | | Hey Leslie!
I'm in America's Hometown--Plymouth, Massachusetts. Skies are blue, nary a cloud, and temperature is 76. It's a beautiful day!
We have a population of 55,000 and are the largest town land mass wise in the country. We have many forests here still. My property abuts a 200 acre and that abuts a 3,034 acre park. And I'm right on the water---a pretty wonderful place to live!
There are many great restaurants here since it's a tourist community and they represent many different nationalities. In addition to Plimoth Plantation, which is a recreation of the life the Pilgrims lived, we also have museums, kayaking, whale watches, deep sea fishing, jazz cruises, a philharmonic, theaters with wonderful productions, the 81 foot forefather's monument which the French used to design the Statue of Liberty, and we are home to our native people, the Wampanoags who helped the Pilgrims survive the first few winters.
And can I add that in our shout outs if you could add info about your town that would be great! Any photos???

Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | Ladies,
Thanks for sharing and the challenge. If you would like to see some pictures of Middletown, I invite you to click ShopMiddletown.com.
Now, I just found out today that the owner of the local coffee shop in Middletown, Shelly Masengeri, is open to singing the "Star-Spangled Banner" prior to the start of Saturday's downtown parade. As most of you know, that is not a very easy song to sing, period. To do a good job singing that song is quite a challenge - even for a professional singer. Well, Shelly retired as a professional singer. Before she retired from her professional singing career, she sang the "Star-Spangled Banner" in Las Angeles at a rally for none other than General Norman Schwartzkoff. The general liked her singing so much that he vowed the next time he came to Las Angeles for a rally, he wanted Shelly to sing that song. Well, now the good people of Middletown, CA have Shelly as the owner of the Crave Coffee House.
Shelly told me today she is available and willing to come to the parade and sing the national anthem. Realtor David Neft of Neft & Neft Realty will be providing the public address system. He knows how outstanding Shelly's voice is. David happens to be a well-known musical entertainer in his own right in addition to being a real estate broker. In fact, he will be providing background music for the parade this year. Nevertheless, he is eager to have Shelly sing our nation's National Anthem. The questions is - will the organizers of the parade allow her to do it?

Kristin | | Plymouth, Massachusetts
Here's The Rock that started it all...
And here's my favorite local hunk--Chief Massasoit of the Wampanoags...a wonderful friend to the Pilgrims. Then they took all the native people's food that had been stored for the winter.
Our Forefather's Monument--erected in 1859.
In the fall we do wet harvesting of our cranberries.
Yes, we still have Pilgrims walking around...
Here's a small part of my 1/2 mile driveway.
One of my favorite neighbors.
And we have glorious sunrises and sunsets over pristine white sand beaches and nature preserves...
Hope you enjoyed America's Hometown!

Scott Wolpow | | Kristin,
You do know that is not the real Rock. It was chosen years ago. The real rock was further out and is under water these days.

Kristin | | Hi Scott--
That is PART of the real rock. If there ever WAS a rock. The first place they landed was actually on Provincetown but they found no fresh water so then came down the coast and landed on Clark's Island, in Plymouth Harbor, where they held a prayer service and spent the first night. The next morning they took small boats in to explore the harbor making sure it was safe and could accomodate the Mayflower. And several men came ashore looking for freshwater. Plymouth has 356 lakes so they struck the jackpot here! Once freshwater was found they came ashore.
William Bradford had made no reference in his diaries of a rock but John Billington, one of the Strangers, had in his writings. John was the first person hung for murder in this country and his grandsons found his diaries and went looking for the rock. The only rock that was deemed appropriately above the water line was a glacial rock that they surmised MUST be where they actually first step foot on land. Eventually, the town tried to move the rock to its present site but it broke in transit. What you see is a small chunk of that rock. By the way, it didn't say 1620 on it when the Pilgrims landed... :-)
And yes, folks, it is just a rock and it always amuses me to hear tourists say, "That's it? It's a rock" totally missing the significance of that rock. But when it is surrounded by immigrants waiting to be sworn in as citizens next to that rock I challenge any one to have a dry eye. Or I love remembering back on the Thanksgiving morning when the Commadant's Own Marine Corps band played our national anthem next to the rock while we unfurled the flag that had been flying over The Arizona and put the flag into retirement--a very glorious day for that rock. And a few years ago, during the International Year of Thanksgiving, 8 Native American Chiefs stood by that rock and welcomed the people of the world to our shores. We had flags from 200 nations surrounding that special rock and it was an amazing sight to witness.
So yup, it's just a chunk of rock. But I love it dearly.

Kristin | | Yes, Reg---it is our pet rock--we even keep it caged--and it has a steady diet of coins.
We're certain that this is the rock the Pilgrims stepped on when they first landed here because on the other side it says, "Pilgrims, Watch Ye Step!"

Scott Wolpow | | My building complex has 1,200 apartments. Forest Hills has about 80K population including the only female Vice Presidential Candidate. We are also home to Ray Ramano and David Caruso, who were real life neighbors. They area also freinds of our own Walter Berbian.
I sign off around 1:00 am. The Big Apple came from an ad campaign, but its' roots are from the Jazz world.
Forest Hills is just over 100 years old. The Forest Hills Gardens is based on a scaled down version of a town in England. It was Americas first planned community, designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead.
The US Open started in Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, less than a block away.
Alfred Hichcock's Two on a Train was filmed here, as were many episodes of Law and Order. During the early days of film Forest Hills was the Beverly Hills of it's time.
We also gave birth to Jerry Springer. The Forest Hills Jewish Center is often a stop on campaign trails.

Lamar Morgan 954-603-7901 | | Scott,
Moving to the Middletown area from Atlanta, GA, I found a town having a one-chair barber shop somewhat novel. While I know Manhattan is famous for its "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants (that is to say small, family-owned restaurants), are there such things as one-chair barber shops where you or anyone else on this network live? Middletown's one-chair barbershop expanded to two chairs about two years ago.

Kristin | | Neat stuff Scott! And I am a big Ray Romano fan--the embarrassing truth is I probably can quote the next line from any of the episodes of Everyone Loves Raymond. One of the best comedy shows ever to air. Maybe I just have a photographic memory...ya, that must be it. I couldn't possibly have watched that much of that show, could I?
And Forest Hills is a really nice area of NYC for those of you who don't know the city.

Scott Wolpow | | One seat Barber shops, no. But we have an increase in Barber Shops again. Most have less than 5 seats. But we now have 6 of them. If you watch GoodFella's you will see one. The scene in teh Barber shop. And look through the window to my building. That is not the real Barber shop from what happened in real life. That is down the street next to the fire house. BTW that block burned down twice, with the fire department next door. Ironically at Barber shop where they filmed the movie was where real life Mafia people got tehir hair cut. The "Pizza Connection" [Big time Heroin importers] Pizza place is on the next block. Though my dog would attest to their good nature, they gave her cheese when I ate there.
Now I know why the health department never bothered them.

Reg Charie | | 55,000 in all of Canada is a tad low. I think our population is around 33,400,000 However only some 0.00119% are smart enough to live here in the Comox Valley.
