Problem of the Taxi wala's in MumbaiViews: 577
Jun 12, 2007 5:28 pmProblem of the Taxi wala's in Mumbai#

Tushar
Some time back while travelling on my scooter from VT to Metro via the POLICE COMMISSIONER's office, right in front of the commissioner's office, I was stuck in a sort of Jam.

The taxi wala's were busy trying to pick up passengers standing right in the middle of the road. After a lot of hassles some how I reached the point of action for the taxi wala's and tried to argue with them to at least not block the road. To which they simply ignored and went about their business.

When complained to the Traffic Cops standing 10mts away from the spot, got a shameless answer "If the others are not complaining why are you doing so?"

Can some things be done to such arrogance of the taxi wala'a and the equally arogant and shameless cops.

I have twice lodged complaints for refusal to ply by the cab.The traffic police took action once and a copy of the letter was hand delivered by a traffic constable at my residence !
Visit trafficpolicemumbai.org and lodge your grievance.

Can we as a collective community stop plying by taxis?
Let us make a list of Do's and Dont's for the taxi drivers, and if they agree to accept them it is fine or else...

As a community can we take the BEST bus or take a train to nearest destination and then walk - how many are willing to shun away from the taxi-wallahs. Make them feel the pinch, for them to understand.
I feel sad for them as it is their only means of livelihood - but they should also understand the ways and means on this city and the traffic discipline which is required in Mumbai, Delhi and other metros. Bangalore has intorduced this to some extent and we can see the changes in that city.

Become a responsible citizen and know your rights.

1. There should be a meter on every taxi
2. The name and address of the taxi driver should be visible to every commuter
3. There should be a helpline number for taxi complaints.
4. Taxi men union number should be listed as well.
5. All Taxi drivers should be trained on the road map of the city ( this is compulsory in Europe and the test for knowing your city well is a must - unlike in India the taxi driver will say - yeh jagah kahan par hai, aap raasta batao, and then he will start asking for left or right turns and confuse the hell out of a new traveler - typical scene in Delhi)

add on....or remove one of my suggestions if you have a reason to with explanation.

cheers
Lalit

Good thoughs Lalit.

If you have or can get names and addresses of people who have submitted specific written complaints then do let me know. If the complaints have not been addressed it may be possible to get attention refocussed for redressal.

Dear All,

One of my friends took a cabbie wala to the police station. To his surprise even before the Traffic Cop , Taxi wala and the friend could reach the police station a Lawyer from the Taxi Union was waiting on the behest of the Taxi wala.

Looking at the lawyer the cop as usual changed sides and requested the friend that he drops the idea of compliant.

Today my friend, has initiated a direct action plan, he gets the taxi wala out of the seat beats him up to the heart full.

He says that the taxi walas come from a place where they are treated like this, the cops in their "region" are not interested in law and order that idea is transfered to the hapless citizens and when these very citizens of the so called state where (law and order) crime is less and its neighbour state of the Railway minister come to cities like Mumbai & Delhi they will cry out that they are poor people, bribe the cop with a few small Gandhi papers and go scot free.

We cannot do this kind of tactics, but one such way I have done it is block the entire traffic so as the cops take the matter LITTLE seriously.

Your suggetions.

A week ago, when i went to pick up my relative comingfrom chennai at the airport, i was watching the way the taxi fellows were behaving to pick up passengers.

a lady who had to catch a bus to pune a was told in front of me to pay 500 rupees

the foreigner was told that it would cost him 150 dollars to go to nariman point.

the airport taxis are the worst lot. No uniforms, No badges, all Paan spitting guys, and worst is one guys finalise a deal and the driver is different for that vehicle.

autos are no execption either. few yeares ago, in mumbai it was easy to pick up a taxi or a auto to any near or far destination and the drivers were decent, wearing uniforms and badges and had the right fare card.

today, it is different. Maya Memsaab and Lallu land have tken over mumbai auto and taxi and the police can do nothing to change them. the auto fellas want lamba bada

i remeber an incidence in Pune. it was most probably 1988 or 1989, late may or early June. I reached pune by maharashtra express (5.45 am). As a habit rang my friend's place that i had arrived and would reach university guest house where i had booking done by my guide. my friend asked me to wait outside the gate and said hewould pick me from there. i told him, no need, i would take an autorikshaw and reach, and there was no need for him to travel 10 km from home to railway station and to university another 7 km, and back home. the phone got disconnected on its own , somehow, and since i had said what i wanted to, i didnt call back again.

i came out and realised that there were several autorikshaws waiting for passengers but no body was hiring them. instead there were members of a huge group asking each passenger or groups of passengers as to where they wanted to go. They would drop them at their desired destination free of cost. some members of the crowd were renowned citezen of Pune, i learnt later. when i enquired,i was told that autorikshawwalas of pune had goen on strike for no legitimate demands on previous day and public had to face lot of problems as they didnt allow PMT buses to run either. within 24 hrs punaits united and decided that they wouldnt allow any autorikshaw wala to take any 'bhaada'.instead right from one midnight to another, the citizens flocked railway and bus stations and otehr major transport destinations, and took resposnsibilty of reaching people/travellers to their destinations. Since then , my friend tells me, the autorikshaw walas of pune never went on such a kind of strike.
they didnt care how much petrol they spent that day, that they had to do so much of driving, and that they had to take the entire day off from work/ family. Such are people of pune. Other maharashtrians might make fun of them for their kinks, but this is what they proved- united we stand- no tantrums please!
i dont know whether such a thing can happen in mumbai, or for that matter, in any other city..i still wonder how did they do such a huge and strong network for a cause within a day..(ther were no cellphones that time..)
if any ryzer was a member of that team, i would love to hear from him/her.

Just to add a qualifier to the first point -

1. There should be a correct meter on every taxi.

Yesterday, I have paid Rs 100 to travel from domestic airport arrival to the end of the first flyover at Vakola, where I got off when I noticed the meter running faster than the National Gold Winner at the 100 meter dash!!!

Hi Anish,

I know, and I wish I had had enough wits to notice the number. But we arrived at 230 in the morning and we were really tired after a delayed flight and we just wanted to get rid of him!

Hence now beyond ranting, there is little option here.

Just to give you some background, it was the traffic cop at the airport who led us to this cab. Before getting in, we even asked the traffic guy and the driver of the cab, if the meter was ok. Both of them told us it was.
(I know, that is no guarantee, but there is no other way to let them know you are aware/going to be watching their meter).

They are all in this together... whom do you complain to?

Dear Amita
Yes I agree with you.We tend to forget when we have some more imp. matters on hand.I feel whatever their combination try to register a protest or else even this right we will have to forego. As for arguing with the taxi man I feel it is simply waste of time.I always remember a saying posted by one of our ryzers."Never argue with fools ,they take you down to their level and then beat you with experience "

I faced a similar problem when I recently visited mumbai from Chennai. I was surprised to see that there were no pre-paid taxis. I was told that the taxis will run by meter and to hop on to the first taxi in the queue. I did so. The driver tried to tell me that he has to go a long distance to my destination and would cost me 300 or more. But I had a rought direction from the office I was going to (Jacobs), and stopped the taxi just past the turning I was supposed to take (though he was telling me the turning point was a few more kilometers away), asked a paanwala and got the right direction. The taxiwala grudgingly took me to my destination. I paid by the meter and before he could start protesting, gave him 20 rupees more and told him in bihari hindi to get going. He took the hint.
