Video Trailers for Books?Views: 748

Hi all,
I'm mostly a lurker here, sorry about that, but I'm hoping to join in a little more, and thought that I'd start by asking a question:)

What do you think of video trailers for books? I just completed my second one and wondered if y'all do these too, or if you watch them? If you do use/watch them, where do you mostly view them or share them?

Would you think of doing one of these if you don't already have one of them? Do you think they're a waste of time? If so, why?

Thanks so much for any thoughts you can share about this with me.

Warmly,
Jenny:)

I think of video trailers as color was to B&W TV. It's a must. The problem is how to do one without ticking off the entire X-gen that will watch them. They have to be cool or you look like dirt. The video freaks will tell it is simple, just slam out a Flash file. Sure, you try to write a storyboard, hire (for beer) actors that can read, and have a $2000 Sonycam laying around to capture the images. If you get it figured out, let me know. I'll do the same. That is my goal for this summer - get something on the air.

I managed to hook up with a professional musician (Rob Anthony) over at MySpace, to do sort of a cross-promotional thing. I advertised his music, he's letting me use about 2min. of music that doesn't sound like it came out of a computer-generated accordian ;)

I know of another MySpace author who's been corresponding with some of the actress/actors/models on MySpace for a while now and is looking to use some of their photographs/voice over talent to put together a video trailer.

I think, if you do it right, you can catch very talented up-and-comers to do it for free (or very little--like you said, paid in beer ;) ) as long as you offer to promote them along with the trailer. It's all about networking, I think :)

I used Windows Movie Maker on my computer and can tell by viewing many of the other trailers on YouTube and Google that it's a popular program ;)

I don't know about pissing off the Gen-Xer technophiles out there. I think that if they're your audience, then maybe that's a concern, but there's very few of those who read the sort of thing I write, and if they do--I'd very much love their help the next time around ;)

You never know what will happen with a positive attitude, a willingness to put in some work for others, and an intention to create a win-win situation for everyone willing to get involved ;) Sometimes, those who criticize, if handled correctly, can teach us a TON of helpful tidbits and tactics to make our endeavors really shine in the end :)

At least that's the way I want to look at it :)

Thanks so much for your response!!

Warmly,
Jenny:)

You are so right about the positive approach. I will checkout the trailers you mentioned. I saw from your profile, you centered several of your books on "Knight." I have a knight tale of mine own. When I started to think about a second book, friends came up with, "If your a real writer, you'd start a story with - 'It was a dark and stormy night...'" So, I did. I wrote a chapter with the slight change-up a dark and stormy knight, and that became the title of the book. I would have changed it to "Dark Knight", but the crowd insisted on leaving the corny title. I should have never given in, but it hasn't hurt sales at all. In fact, I think is draws attention and a huge curiosity. You can checkout the synopsis on my site. Also, while your there, checkout the Fox&Quill newsletter. We are always looking for contributors and you certainly qualify. The F&Q is a place authors can vent or expound, or just deliver the goods. I showcase an author up front, and then three or four articles follow. You're welcome to join in. Right now I have about 60 readers and they are all authors. Here's the site:

I mention this because it is a great example of networking with other authors. We are all cross-linked on each other's sites and since several of us publish with Infinity, their art designer even made a logo for us. Many email back and forth to the mutual benefit of all. My next project is planned to be a mystery series. I'm in the process of character building at the moment.

Very cool site, John!! ;) Very easy to navigate and F&Q is really well done, very professional and crammed full of great information. I would be totally honored to be a part of that :)

If you'd like, you can email me at: jturner4@charter.net and we can discuss this more. I don't want to bother the list with a personal exchange from us.

For those of you reading--you should really check out the site that John linked to--and the newsletter. Both are very interesting and have a ton of useful information.

Thanks so much John, for responding and making such a wonderful offer ;)

Warmly,
Jenny:)

I enjoy book trailers. I like to watch them and I enjoy the process of making mine. I just finished my second one yesterday for my upcoming release next month.

I put a link to it on my Ryze profile if anyone wants to see it. :-)

I still have to link it in on my homepage ;) You've got a really nice website too. I liked the trailer you did for a Midnight Infatuation as well. Maybe we should do something where we all share what we've written or had published.

Thanks for sharing!

Warmly,
Jenny:)
