I graduated last December 2006 with my BA in Psychology and a minor in Health Studies and after working in the hospital environment for almost a year as a Patient Family Relations Represent, I realize that I want to be in a more professional environment still with heavy interaction with people. I realized HR fits that description and all that I really want and more with so much opportunities and growth potential. I have looked in to temp agencies for employment as well as applied for permanent Administrative Assistant positions and HR assistant positions just to get my foot in the door with no avail. I have thought about just getting my PHR certification with the hope that it would make me more of a competitive candidate but a lot of companies want the experience as well. What is the best route and can some of you who are from non-traditional backgrounds in this field give me your insight as well. I would really appreciate it.

hello Sheena,

its really nice that you have identified your area of interest and what you want to do in life i believe this will make your life a lot easier.

to get in HR your few things you can do first approach smaller companies which will give you an opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities.

to improve your chances to get into an HR role try reading some stuff on HR in general, the areas it covers etc. this will help you in being well informed before your approach a companies

I would just looking for opening where you can get into a multi skilled role rather than specific. this will help you learn all facets of HR quickly. Then gradually with experience plan to move higher within the same organization and eventually you can move into another company when you feel confident of taking on major responsibilities in your area of interest

Good luck

Hey Amit,

Thanks for the response. I think narrowing down my career path has made things a litte easier but finding the right opportunity will make it a whole lot easier. I did think my best bet would be checking out larger corporations because it would be easier to move up within them but since that is not working and I definitely need the experience first hand,I will focus on smaller companies right now and also broadening my education by reading up on the field. I really appreciate the feed back.

Thank you,

Sheena

Hey Sheena,

if you want i can analyze your resume and probably identify some gaps if any and try and better position your resume.

yeah you should focus on getting into HR and only small companies will give you the opportunity to break in and learn most large corporations look for experience.

Do you use any instant messengers so that we can communicate ?

My understanding is HR can encompass different things depending on the type of firm you work for. There is general corporate hr which might be interfacing with new candidate prospects or might be involved in supporting existing employee benefits etc. There is the other side such as employment agents. And so on. I suspect you can find more by browsing the web. Good luck.

I am pretty open to the different directions this field has to offer and am willing to start in any to gain much needed experience as well as to help me pin point what direction I prefer. Thanks a lot for the links. I checked out your website and see that you have so much experience in mangagement consulting and your website career hot list, which I will definitely look into. What companies do you primarily consult with? What do you look for in entry level applicants as far as skill sets and background? What is a good avenue for entry level applicant interested in HR as well as consulting to get a start; postions/companies to look into?

Sheena,

to begin with try to get a lateral shift within the place that you are currently working.

that way you will gain an experience and also an opportunity to see whether you really want to build a career in HR.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

If you are willing to start at the bottom, there are plenty of recruitment firms that would be open to take you. While there, complete an MBA in HR (check out www.dwge.com for programs from XLRI) and try for job after 2 years. While in recruitments, you could try to get a feel of other aspects of HR, and even attempt a lateral shift there.
