URGENT - Chihuahua Rescue in North Carolina/South Carolina border areaViews: 1198

My cousin in Laurinburg, NC can no longer keep my precious Frodo Doggins. I want him back but am unable to find a way to get him from there to me in the Washington, DC area.

He is not getting along with her dogs, so what we had thought would be a good fit is not working! She wanted to post an ad in her area on Craig's List but I am fearful that he will end up as bait in a dog fight.

Please send me your suggestions ASAP so I can make a decision before cousin Alex puts my boy up on Craig's List. He is up for adoption locally if I can't get him back up here. He needs to be an only dog or be with smaller dogs (we have a German Shepherd and a Pit Bull) and he is neutered and good with cats. He walks well on a leash and does a few tricks. Loves to sleep under the covers with you or your child. Unless you lock him out of the bedroom, he will be in bed with you, like a hot water bottle on your belly. He is a sweety, but not a good fit with my cousin's two Chihuahuas or big dogs. He will make someone a very good pet.

Please help me get him back or find a loving home for this special doggy.

If you can tell me how to add a photo to a message I'll be happy to post one.

I hope your cousin isn't foolish or unkind enough to put your dog on Craig's List - all she has to do is call her vet - or any vet near her and they will take the puppy in. What is the cost of transport from your cousin to you? It should be less than $100.00...

I wouldn't begin to know where to search for pet transport, although if it is around $100 I could afford it.

We are nearly 400 miles from Laurinburg (6.5 hours of driving each way) and my other half can't take off to drive us down there and back. My cousin doesn't have a car and her husband has no weekends off for months to come. I had suggested she meet us half way, but that won't work either. My folks are even further from her in east TN and stepdad is having cataract surgery soon (so he won't be driving for a while).

Alex doesn't live near a pet store but I hadn't thought to ask her to check with the local vets.

Maybe you could see if GreyHound Bus lines could take her, or find a friend who is willing to drive and pay the gas.

Or find two friends and they can meet halfway.

Or rent a car.

Anything is better than putting the dog on Craigs List.

I found on petfinder.com a huge list of transport groups in almost every state. If you are still looking for help I would suggest checking this link out. I had no idea there were so many groups, this is awesome.

Update on Frodo

I checked with my cousin and apparently the shelter is indeed a kill shelter according to her vet.

Frodo is now owned by a twelve-year-old girl in NC. Probably being treated like the little prince he thinks he is, spoiled rotten!

Sadly, my cousin's Chihuahua, Shadow, who befriended Frodo, has died. He was the victim of a vicious Rottweiler who jumped the fence and grabbed him. He survived the attack, suffering broken ribs, a punctured lung and spinal injuries. He died a few days later (which was probably a blessing considering his injuries).

Since this was the Rottweiler's first offence, the owners were only charged $25.00! My cousin told them they would be paying all the vet bills and replacement costs for another Chihuahua.

The dog is back in his yard in an enclosure with no roof, which he could escape. He was able to clear a standard height fence to go after Shadow. Punky tried to save him, but he is a Chihuahua. Had Frodo been there, being used to big dogs (my pit and shepherd), he would not have hesitated to come to the aid of his friend Shadow. Not that a 12.5 lb. Chihuahua could do anything to a Rottweiler!

Poor Punky is still dispondent over the loss of his brother Shadow, although he is taking an interest in the new puppies. Two boys from a litter, one of which will not take any crap from the very Alpha Punky. You can't replace a beloved pet with another and my cousin is afraid to let them go outside in the backyard, which is unsafe.

The Rottweiler is a neighborhood home-bred dog (reputable breeders do not breed for aggressiveness) and comes from a line of dogs known to be agressive. My cousin and her neighborhood are outraged that the penalty was a $25 fine! They want the dog put down. There are neighbors with small children, will a two-year-old be next?

I've explained to my cousin that the person who bred the dog for aggressiveness is responsible (by virture of not being a registered breeder). This is not a dog that is protecting a junk yard behind a high fence. This is a back yard dog that has never been a pet. A pet dog is not kept outside year round or on a chain all day even in southern NC! It is the owner who is responsible for the dog and what it does (kill). I asked my cousin to get the animal control people to tell the owners that they must get the dog trained or surrender it to be put down since it has killed.

My Pit is a pet, spending most of her life indoors. CiCi is only let out in the back yard on a chain (once we saw she could clear the fence) for the safety of other animals. Lady is a submissive shepherd with no interest in jumping the fence (she went through a hole, before we fixed it) and can be let out in the back yard without being on a chain. Neither is kept outdoors. We walk them on leashes (leash laws in our area) and CiCi is aggressive toward most other dogs regardless of size (but not Frodo). We have not found a trainer to curb her aggressiveness toward other dogs, however, she likes the Pit Bull in the neighborhood (a cute male a year old) and gets along well with Lady (submissive) and Frodo. My neighbor has as sweet Rottweiler who recognizes me and comes to me for affection, Roxy knows I love dogs and is friends with Lady. However, CiCi is very aggressive toward Roxy, so we keep them apart.

Every dog is different and I think CiCi can be trained, but I think some dogs cannot benefit from training and should be put down, especially after killing a beloved pet. I can handle dead squirrels and rabbits, but not a beloved pet.
