Paul Finkelstein | | Hi Fit Entrepreneurs, Let me start this fitness thread for Entrepreneurs. Use this to check in and tell us what you may have done to exercise this week. I have my schedule to 5 times a week and 2 days off. I know Scott W is registered for the MSBike. How about all the rest. you must do something to stay in better shape, feel better about yourself, reduce some stress, (must have a little stress..we all drive in a car..maybe),... So report in and discuss your RESULTS what you did for the week or a particular day! I will start! Today I did 6.5 miles at 12pm on TM. Treadmill. 2 of those miles were 10 minute miles. I hope to do a 4 hour marathon this December. :) p ps your turn!!!!

Suzette Flemming | | Hi, Paul and fellow Ryzers ~
I'm glad you like to run. I am one of those people that absolutely hate to run. My kids celebrate if I race them to the barn or to the car.
My exercise is in a totally different form. Horses leave lots of piles. Too many piles mean way to many bugs. I walk the pasture (5 acres) picking up after them every morning. It usually take about an hour. So I get some cardiovascular exercise and a bit of weight lifting.
Unless it's 30 below zero or pouring rain, I get outside everyday. It's the type of exercise I can't complain my way out of nor can I ignore it. Which is good because if it wasn't for this type of exercise I wouldn't get any.

Annabelle Lin | | Hello Paul,
I've done an hour of gmying during lunch session yesterday, pumping about 10kg of wt lifting machines and only focusing on my back and arms muscle groups.
I do dragonboating once a week as well for my company and play badminton once a week as well with my partner and the company.
Later on for lunch, will continue gyming for abs this time around building up my six pecs all over again after losing 4 of them of course. Lol

I lift heavy weights at the gym a couple of times a week, for about an hour and a half. I have been weight lifting for over 20 years. Not being athletic by nature, I wanted the most intense workout for my body in the least amount of time. I superset - alternating upper and lower body routines on the same day. It provides aerobic benefit as well as the strength training.
I fast walk for about an hour outdoors several times a week for cardio. Occasionally turn it to jogging. But I find that walking up hilly streets really gets the heart going.
I believe weight lifting is very important for women - as they get older and hormones decrease, women become increasingly at risk for heart disease and bone loss. Resistance (weight) training prevents both. It's great for the circulation, great for the skin - and lifting weights has always increased my mental clarity and confidence. I really notice a difference if I get lazy and miss workouts.
Although one can weight train inexpensively at gyms or at home, I pay for a very expensive gym - Sports Club LA is like a country club - because the atmosphere inspires me to keep going and gives me a great lift in consciousness - the feeling of success produces succeess. So although they keep raising their monthly rates, I bite the bullet and stay with it. One can't put a price on health.

Rachel deHar | | Ok enough talk of all this exercise. You are making me tired......Just kidding.
I'm well aware of the fact that I need to increase my fitness activities ten fold but it's finding the motivation that gets me. I do try and get out walking as much as possible with the kids but I don't think it's enough to have any serious results.
Since having my baby 7 months ago it's been a bit of a struggle getting the energy to take up running, swimming or gym but after reading this i'm a little more motivated.
So I guess this will be my first official post on the road to a new me.....
Starting this afternoon with a light jog for 30-45 mins, aim for 50-100 sit-ups and maybe some light weights on my personal gym (been stored in the garage for the past 6 months and barely touched in that time). Will start off slowly so I don't over do it.

Kevin Barrett | | Hey Paul,
I took 3 weeks off to be part of my youngest daughters wedding in July… I did not run, bike or swim for 3 weeks… a good break but…. I also gained 14 pounds during that time….
The weight is finally come off again…
I stopped doing Marathons a little over 3 years ago…. Running and basketball were my main means for keeping fit… I rarely lifted weights, only swam when returning to the surf board…. And zero cycling….
The last marathon I did my weight was a little heavier than normal…. Around 150 lbs… I finished.. but it was the first time I hit the wall…. And the first time I did not break 3 hours…. I finished injury free… but 4 months later on a leisurely run along the beach in Australia… I felt a twinge in my left knee…. No problem…. Several weeks later it really swelled up…
I returned to the States and gained weight.. as I got older I found that I had to start off a Marathon at a weight less and less each time…. My fitness was one dimensional…
A MISTAKE…..
Last year, I started doing Triathlons… I started lifting weights… (Marilyn, mentioned to me that she did that, and she is correct it is imperative as we get older to do some weight lifting, it helps build bone density) the down side of increased bone density is that it make you work much harder when you swim…. Weight lifting also continues burning calories for around 24 hours after you stop…..
I used to suffer from lower back pain… I believe now that is was from overuse…. Doing the same exercise day in and day out…. I think Cross Training is the key to staying injury free… and helping to become stronger and more fluid, when doing endurance training.. also we must blend in “Interval Training” or “Speed Training”…. Proper food intake…. (I do not use the word diet, although that is what it is, the word diet has taken on a negative connotation) and also Hydration…..
When in balance everything moves along quite well… operative word… BALANCE…
I have a very busy work schedule…..
And I am training for a Sprint Triathlon October 27th…… ½ mile ocean swim, 10 mile Bike and 3 mile run…. Last year I did 5 Triathlons.. this year the upcoming one will be my first…. I had other priorities this year…. But still trained…. It is part of my life….
It helps me do… everything else I want to do in life…
A very old saying Paul….. in a different context but still very relevant…
“Know they Self”…. And “To your own self be true”….. this hold true for training…
Work within your limits….. gradually push your limits (intervals) and compete only against yourself…. I must admit I am competitive… but the word competition means working with others…. So preparation is important.. the measure of how well you have prepared is on the field with others…
I have augmented my training with the use of Elliptical 3.5 miles 3 times a week….
I run 5 miles a day 4 times a week…
Spin class for one hour 3 times a week
Cycle on my bike…. 3 or 4 times a week for 20 to 50 miles…
And I swim 5 times a week for .5 to 1.5 miles….
Plus I have my fun time playing competitive basketball twice a week for 1 to 2 hours…
And I still have time to for fun and family…. Did I forget work?
No… my work is also FUN….
So Paul.. all of the information you have received up to this point… is good… CROSS TRAIN…. And you will stay free from over use stress… and above all LISTEN to what your body is saying….
And if you take 3 weeks off… and gain 14 lbs… So What….. that is also part of the fun….
Kevin
P.S. Thanks for the thread Paul… I am impressed with your… thought stimulations…. Even though you are the “Master of the One Liners” , it keep things moving…. I call that exceptional “Time Management”

I'm in the low 5's at the moment. Clearly, this is one of my worst events as I am very formibidable in the other events (i.e. 10.6 sec.--100m Dash).
Any suggestions would be nice.

Tom Cellie | | Chubby Idea guy here. I am proud to say that I have been faithful to do a daily regiment of pushups, crunches, leg raises and back exercises. None of which burn many if any calories but after 6 weeks I have seen great improvements and now I'm feeling like I may actually start doing something aerobic. Remember....I have existed for 6 years in front of this box which had turned me into a pasty, portly walking middle aged statistic so even though its not much, I DO feel encouraged about the improvements I have seen as well as the way I feel. You don't care to eat as much when your stomach is tight. Heh, nothing compared to the marathons YOU guys do but I will not despise the day of small beginnings ;-)
I'm developing a social network for business people and find myself lately in the mood to type so I'll be chiming in more often.
Be blessed.

Paul Finkelstein | | Hi gang! It is so easy to loose sight of the plan to get fit and stay fit when your busy in your business. Or ARE ALL Entrepreneur folks ALWAYS focused?????? Sometimes I have to RE-FOCUS! :) You too? On my camera I just have to click the button HALF way and that is all it takes to refocus a picture. BUT, to refocus to stay fit or keep fit might I suggest takes a little more EFFORT. Anything worthwhile takes effort as we might all know. I only hope I am preaching to the choir. :) So, as I refocus regularly to stay fit, I hope you do the same. I know I have found a few runners on the networks that also run like myself. If you never have run before long distances, you might like that as your fitness. You can measure your progress each week. I started a program of running at 30 minutes for the first week. the second week I added ONLY 10 minutes and did that for 4 months straight.
You can too. Wanna run a full marathon one day with a few of us?
;)

John Stephen Veitch | | Hello Paul
I guess your marathon is just about to happen. I hope the training was injury free. I read what you wrote in April and I wondered if you weren't training too much.
Paul doesn't need to know this I'm sure, but for the rest of you.
Jogging is good exercise. Start slowly, mix running and walking. Run to the next target, a telegraph pole or the corner of something you can see. Walk until you breathing recovers: repeat. Use the total time to control how far you go each day.
Work a hard easy programme, long runs one day, short sprints and about half the time the next day. Don't forget to stretch before and after each session. You want your flexibility to increase not decrease as you get fitter.
If you are new to this, probably about 2-3 miles you'll come up against the first plateau, where you don't seem to improve even though you continue to train. This might last a month or three, but don't give up. You are re-engineering all your internal plumbing to cope with the increased exercise load. All your blood vessels, your lungs, your heart need to renew themselves for the new levels of exercise you are doing. It takes time. When that work is DONE suddenly exercise will become much easier. Running a LONG distance won't seem to be a problem any more.
If you use this process to get fit enough to run 6 miles on a regular basis, that's a good level of fitness to maintain. From there you can lift to running a marathon in three months without much trouble thought might like to try a couple of half marathons first.

John Stephen Veitch | | Hi Paul, Not running, my knees won't stand it, but Carolyn and I did do a bike ride of 22km this morning. (That's about half as much effort as running it.)
As I see it being able to run 10km or cycle 20km on a daily basis is a fair level of fitness for people to aspire to, regardless of age. If you can do that you'll never look at a flight of stairs or a hill and think, "I don't want to go up there". You'll always have the energy to do the normal things the bring people enjoyment.
Then, if you need to really get fit for hiking, to run a half marathon or marathon, the step-up from 10km isn't a lot of work.
On the other hand going from very little exercise to 10km is for most people very difficult, and might take you six months, perhaps if you are very overweight, even longer.

Getting back in shape for this year.
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.
Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.
Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I’m at this level.)
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

I got up at 330am to run at 430am.. Ran 20 miles in 4:45 I think thhis is my BEST time all time!!! Also, I ran 5 min and walked for 1 min and repeated for all 20. This method and timing was perfect for me and NO wall at 20 came about...(Wall Eric was referring to when you have no more left to run)
Try 3 min run and 1 min walk and build up to 5 min run and 1 min walk. You will instantly see your time improve and perhaps NO injury too... what a great technique one of the coaches gave me. :)
Next sat is 16 and then 18 the next sat then 6/27 marathon in Seattle.
See my PROFILE if you havent yet sponsored or pledged me ANY amount $1 to $25 or higher if you can for Autism and helping my team run for autism. EVERY $2, $1 goes to Autismspeaks.org a local charity doing their thing for autism.

Hi folks.
I'm no longer the invincible, bulletproof, go-go guy of a while ago and now have a sedentary lifestyle
I couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding if my life depended upon it.
Discovering that riding a bike was taking too much effort; I was open to a few ideas to regain some muscle strength.
Here's the easy, non-threatening baby steps I discovered on a local TV station. ... and they're working without having to go overboard. Here's the enchilada
Enjoy.

When I went from 30 seconds to 1 full minute of sustained excersise. .... I celebrated with a non-decaffeinated coffee and took the afternoon off.
Quite often I'll do an excercise while waiting for or going down in the elevator so distractions aren't likely.

Carrie Groff | | I exercise every morning doing some kind of video on www.exercisetv.tv I love Cindy Whitmarsh video's. I like to do the Cardio Intervals and also add in some ab videos too. Some days I do 2 or 3 videos right after another getting in about 40-60 mins every day. Plus, in the evenings my husband and I like to walk about 2-4 miles together at least 3-5 times a week.

If you struggle "going to the gym" like I did, perhaps something like karate is your answer. It is social, cardio, physical, mental and you leave with usefull skills too.

Ann Rogers | | Hi Paul,
I'm also an advocate of staying fit. I wish I had more time for more exercising! I work from home, which tends to keep me in front of the computer for very long periods of time throughout the day. Shoulder, neck, and backaches were the results! Here's how I now combat all that in short spurts.
1. A couple of times a day I go upstairs/downstairs 8 consecutive times. (This takes only about 3 minutes each time but really gets the heart pounding and blood pumping.)
2. Take a couple of minutes to lift 5 lb weights (I'm a weakling) doing approximately 3 repetitions of multiple moves. (This also takes about 5 minutes.)
3. I do cheater's push-ups. I stand back from my desk, reach to the edge of the desk, keeping heels on the floor, and then do the push-ups as many times as I can.
4. Around mid-afternoon I try to get outside for at least a 2-mile walk if time and weather allows.
Just these few things throughout the day really, really help a lot and don't cut into the productivity. In fact, I think they all help a lot to prevent fatigue.
Stay fit, stay well! Ann http://www.bizbuylink.com Private Reply to Ann Rogers |

Randy Hughes | | I would like to share my weekly routine. Monday - Friday I'm in the gym from 5 to 7 AM. Begin my day with a 3 to 5 mile run at 8:30 minute mile pace. Jump rope for 10 minutes and hit the weights. Rotate daily upper and lower body. Every 3rd Saturday run 12 miles in or out (weather) at 9 minute mile pace. My goal is to run the Austin Marathon again in Feb. 2010. It's an annual event and only missed one in the last 10 years. Now that I'm over 50 my goal is less than 4:30 hours/minutes. I'm anxious to see how a an new product I'm taking will impact my performance and recovery. Private Reply to Randy Hughes |

Shyam Kumar Mangayil | | Hi everybody, Since everybody out here is talking fitness , I will get into what I do in a week : 100 press ups * 5 days 10 head down-foot up pressups * 4 days : Dont know what you call it - reclining push up , suspended/dismissed pushup :) The hands of a baby would be broader than mine so dont laugh : I just manage 1 finger push up . Tummy Crunches : 2 sets of 20-20 crunches * 3 days And the most boring : cycle on the spot for 10 minutes * 4 days
When I have access to weights and dumbells / barbells , 3 sets of each.
Looking forward to any powerful anti-tummy stuff and any improvements / suggestions . Private Reply to Shyam Kumar Mangayil |

Akira Hirai | | Fitness is a disciplined balance of diet and exercise.
For most people, food intake affects body fat more than exercise does. The Texas Cheese Fries at Chili's has 1920 calories and 147 grams of fat. That's almost a day's worth of calories and more than a day's worth of fat in just an APPETIZER.
Replacing simple carbs (e.g., sugars and bleached flour) with complex carbs (whole grains and veggies), minimizing saturated and trans fats and increasing healthy fats (fish oils, olive oils), and eating smaller portions but more frequently are all good places to start.
On the exercise side, for the past 5+ years, I've been getting 30-90 minutes per day of cardio 3-6 times a week. Depending on my mood, the weather, and how my knees and other body parts feel that day, this can be anything from a rapid hike, a hard trail run, a hilly mountain bike ride, or just putting in time on the elliptical. Over the past two years, it's been more trail running than anything else.
Since muscle tissue burns fat, strength training is an essential component of a fitness routine. I've always known this, but I've always had a hard time forcing myself to hit the weights. About 3.5 months ago, I started the P90X program (Google it - it's also available at Costco). It's a pretty intensive program combining diet, strength training, ab routines, yoga, martial arts, plyometrics, and core work. I completed the first 90 days, and just started a second round. P90X requires discipline - it's about an hour of work six days per week (the seventh day is either off or doing a relatively easy stretching routine). This, in addition to the cardio, takes a lot of time out of my day, so I had to make cuts elsewhere (like less tv time). So far, I've been very happy with the results.
I find it helpful to subscribe to a magazine like Men's Fitness. It's a monthly reminder of fitness goals, and is full of great ideas for both nutrition and exercise.
Finally, never underestimate the power of a good workout mix on your iPod. I absolutely hated to run before I figured this out. Now, I love to hit the trails.
(By the way, I noticed a few people in this discussion asking about how to burn belly fat. Doing crunches won't burn belly fat - it'll build your abdominal muscles. You really can't "spot reduce" fat in any one location. You need to drop the fat composition of your entire body. And for most people, belly fat is usually the most persistent. Sorry - that's just the way it is. If you don't like it, go get liposuction.) Private Reply to Akira Hirai |

Good morning and thank you for your recent welcome to RYZE. I'm a runner as well and took on the fit program over 3 years ago. 1/2 and a full marathon later, I'm on a new training program called the Core Performance Endurance by Mark Verstegan. Keep up the training--better bodies better minds.

Good for all those that do run. Keep on running.

 Nritarutya | | Hi,
AM a dancer by profession, so my fitness mantra is to workout atleast 1 1/2 hrs everyday that includes a combination of cardio, stretches, weights and flexibity/agility exercises. I also combine a lot of alignment exercises to help me get through the other routines easily. This done, I move on to dancing which takes about 2 hours minimum to a maximum of 5 hours a day.. Keeps me fit needless to say!! :)
Cheers Geetha

Sharron Williams | | So, I have spent the last 7 months walking. Lost about 5-7 lbs. Then I decided to start jogging. Boy, what did I do that for? I messed up my left knee. Don't ask me what I did. Too embarassed to go to the doctor. How would I explain this injury to the doctor? As a RN, I decided to "heal myself". So, my left knee has been wrapped with ace for 4 weeks now. The swelling has come down tremendously. I can start walking on it now. My husband and son has stopped laughing(lol), believe me, you would have too, if you were living here with me. I even break out laughing at my clummsy self at times. I take Ibuprofen once every other day, if that. Now the weight is back on, and then some. My husband suggested yoga, he thinks, maybe I won't hurt myself doing yoga. In the past I have fallen down stairs and sidewalks. And injured my right knee. Is there anyone else out there as clummsy as me? Private Reply to Sharron Williams |
