ADD Consulting was commissioned by one of its clients to isolate those Behaviour / Generic Competencies that, according to research, best predict superior work performance. To this end we embarked on a Benchmarking exercise, comparing the Competency Models / Frameworks of leading International HR Consulting Firms, who have conducted thorough Competency Research (PDI, Lominger, Hay, DDI, SHL, etc.).

After comparing the Competency research and Frameworks of these organisations, a correlation was drawn between their Competency Frameworks to isolate those competencies proven by all the organisations to be predictive of superior performance. The results of this comparative study revealed approximately 30 competencies.

A further study was then undertaken to identify which of these 30 competencies were most frequently applied in the Competency Frameworks of Fortune 500 companies in the ITC, FMCG and Pharmaceutical Industries. These results revealed approximately 10 Competencies.

Interesting trends that emerged are:
1. Most leading Organisations researched, tends to apply different Competencies to different levels of Management (Individual contributors, Managers, Senior Leaders, etc), as opposed to applying one Competency Model to the whole organisation; and
2. There appears to be a reduction in the number of Competencies applied and considered by most (in some cases from 20 competencies to 8)

As the scope of the study was limited to only a small number of leading international organisations, within a few Industries, further investigation and research is required. However the results thus far are encouraging, as it could assist all practitioners in the Human Resource field (and particularly those of us involved in Assessment, Recruitment, Staffing and Hiring)to isolate those behaviour / generic competencies that best predict superior work performance.

To continue with this research, further information as to the Competency frameworks / Models applied in other leading organisations and Industies are required. Should you wish to contribute to this research (and ultimately benefit from the results), kindly make contact with me in this regard.
