What are your views on dog wearing clothes and halloween costume? | Views: 762 |

Mel Taylor | | I never dressed my dog up for Halloween but I attached my dad's clip on bow tie to his collar as a joke. This was in the 80's and everyone flipped. If I had known that today's dog owner would anthropomorphosize their dogs I'd be a rich bitch. Some of my dog food customers would come in with sweaters and jackets on their pooches and then I'd remember the bow tie and wonder if we humans have gone nuts? What's up with us turning dogs into "mini-mees"?

Cathy Markowich | | I've never dressed any of my dogs. They have a Christmas collar which is simple, that's as far as I would go.

Trisha Anderson | | Well, I never dressed my dog up either! However, my daughter Julia did recently for a party in CA and she laughed and laughed about it as she told me what fun they had that night. The dogs were judged on how they looked in their outfits. Hers did not win, but they enjoyed it so much.
My other daughter, Vanessa, has a dog also. They dress her up in sweaters and boots for the colder weather.
I think if there is light and laughter in someone's life, however it comes, is ok. I am so happy my children enjoy dressing their "babies" up. Trisha

Shannon Hill | | So the people enjoyed the costumes...did the dogs? I have seen some dogs that seem to get a kick out of wearing clothes. Mine do not. When Pookie was younger, I tried dressing her. She would go rigid and fall over and refuse to get up til the clothes came off. Lesson learned - my dogs do not wear clothes. Private Reply to Shannon Hill |

Tom Gillispie writer/editor | | My dog Lady hates to be dressed up. She tries to shake them off, like she's shaking off water.
By the way, I saw a Clydesdale on TV that someone had dressed up to look like a 2,000-pound poodle. I felt sorry for the animal.

Mel Taylor | | I truly believe when pets are dressed up and don't pull it off they're tolerating us. When I clipped the bow tie to Bernie's collar I'm never forget his face. I know he was thinking "Why I 'oudda . . ." He tried despreately to pull it off but he couldn't. I smiled triumphantly. Eventually he got over it and wore it. When I'd bathe him the bow tie got hand washed. Soon it became part of his personna until he came home without it. He got his wish in the end:o)

Christopher Aust | | Personally, I don't dress my dogs unless we are going to the snow and then it is mandatory for their welfare. A plain hoodie and snow boots. Nothing fancy. I don't do fancy dress or costumes.
I look at it like this...
For hundreds of years we have been dressing dogs for one reason or another. Whether it was for battle, cold weather or to identify an animal as a service or working animal, it's nothing new.
Quite honestly, a leash and collar could be considered dressing up the dog. If you have ever seen a dog wear a leash and collar for the first time, you know they generally flip out over that at first too.
Does it torture or humiliate the dog? Not if they are a well adjusted and confident dog that has been introduced to it properly. What I find funny is how people (not those of us here) will sit and talk about the cruelty of dressing a dog while their own dog is sitting there with a halti or pinch/shock collar on or left all day in the yard.
People who regularly dress their dogs are definitely a unique lot of people. In over 30 years in the business, I have never seen a dog that had behavioral issues related to being dressed up. I've seen hundred that were screwed up by the devices I mentioned though.
Just my two cents.

Tara | | well my 100+lb dobie would look silly in a costume and my DD's 4 lb mini chihuahua wants nothing to do with clothes or costumes, he doesnt even wear a leash or collar!
but I have friends and clients who their dogs are dressed to the hilt :)
it's a dog and owners personal preference :)

Angela Mager | | I'm new here....or new to posting! Hi!
I think a doggie shirt is fun as long as they are comfortable in it. My dog does fine in a sweater or shirt in the winter. Mostly I'd just go with the box tie clip on the collar! That is a fun way to "dress" them up without making the dog uncomfortable.

Kristin | | I never dressed up my big boy. He was a Golden but did wear his 'therapy' vest when we went to the pediatric nursing home. As soon as he saw the vest he knew where we were headed and he loved to 'work' so he was all excited! I also always put a life vest on him when we went out in the boat. He wasn't so crazy about that but it wasn't negotiable.
At Christmas he would wear his reindeer ears to the pediatric nursing home. The kids always enjoyed seeing him and no matter what he wore or did, he always made them, and me, very happy.
But I will admit, I do love the Halloween outfits on some of the dogs. Just makes me laugh out loud!
