Last week I competed in a Toastmasters Table Topics contest.

Table Topics, for those who are not familiar with Toastmasters, is when you get the opportunity to think on your feet and respond to a question posed to you. Everyone at the contest is asked the same question, and in all fairness, the contestants are escorted out of the room so they do not here the question until its there turn to respond.

Well, I didn't win the contest, but I came out a winner regardless because first, I had fun talking about the habit I would like to break, namely Procrastination. Second, I was given an opportunity to reflect on my answer from a different perspective during the interview process, and finally, I learned a few things about myself in the process, and that is the best gift Toastmasters has to offer; The ability and the opportunity for personal growth. Sure you learn about speaking skills, listening skill, and leadership skills, but those are only tools that enable you to be effective in your New "growth enhanced" Self.

So what does this have to do with Marvelous Monday Motivation?

The question that I was asked during the interview process was, "Don't you think procrastination has its own benefits? Tell us about one time you actually benefited from procrastination."

I relayed the story about the time when I waited to start writing the speech until 4:30 AM when the contest was due to begin at 7:30 AM, and I won the contest, because the material was freshly organized in head. I had been working on the speech for a while, but didn't write it down until then. So procrastination did pay off, and that got me thinking, what we consider as good or bad is nothing more than the meaning we give to it.

As I recall, in the above mentioned winning speech, I had used the following words. "I had plenty of time to prepare my speech, after all, I AM good. And if there is one thing that I am good at, and I mean really, really, REALLY good at ..... it's procrastination." I realized, that even if just to create humor, I had recognized my so called vice as my strong point.

William Shakespeare said, "Nothing is good or bad, but our thoughts make it so."

What are some of the things you are not happy about with yourself? Can you look at them in a different light?

Here is what I would like to motivate you to do. First answer the question "What one habit would you like to break and why?" and then answer the question, "Tell us about a time when this habit actually turned out to be good."

Share your thoughts and experiences with us. Remember, there are no problems, obstacles or challenges. Only the Highest Good.

Decision

Accurate analysis of over 25,000 men and women who had experienced failure, disclosed the fact that lack of decision was near the head of the list of the 30 major causes of failure. This is no mere statement of a theory - it is a fact.
Procrastination, the opposite of decision, is a common enemy which practically every man must conquer.

You will have an opportunity to test your capacity to reach quick and definite decisions when you finish reading this lesson, and are ready to begin putting into action the principles which it describes.

Analysis of several hundred people who had accumulated fortunes well beyond the million dollar mark, disclosed the fact that every one of them had the habit of reaching decisions promptly, and of changing these decisions slowly, if, and when they were changed. People who fail to accumulate money, without exception, have the habit of reaching decisions, if at all, very slowly, and of changing these decisions quickly and often.

The majority of people who fail to accumulate money sufficient for their needs, are, generally, easily influenced by the "opinions" of others. They permit the newspapers and the "gossiping" neighbors to do their "thinking" for them. "Opinions" are the cheapest commodities on earth. Everyone has a flock of opinions ready to be wished upon anyone who will accept them. If you are influenced by "opinions" when you reach decisions, you will not succeed in any undertaking, much less in that of transmuting your own desire into money.

If you are influenced by the opinions of others, you will have no desire of your own.
