How to Lose Page Rank In Google Search EnginesViews: 1170
Oct 31, 2007 1:31 pmHow to Lose Page Rank In Google Search Engines#

Some of you with the Google toolbar may know that until recently the pagerank of this network page was a 3/10.

If you look now you will see that it is currently 2/10.

Why did this happen and how can you avoid having this happening to your website?

Firstly, for the benefit of newcomers, page rank is a rough measure of how important your website or web page is in the eyes of a search engine such as Google.

Having a good page rank for your site usually means that it will appear higher up in search but it has lost some of its importance in recent times. Still, as a rough estimate of how Google sees your site it still has some value.

Anyway, you do want to have a good page rank for your site if you can get it.

So losing page rank is a bad thing and something to avoid if possible.

How did this page lose rank?

Simple. I added the link to the Polar Bear central website which is a site I established to help get sign-ups for a petition to save Polar Bears. http://PolarBearCentral.blogspot.com

Adding that link caused the drop because Google has rules about placing links on websites that are unrelated to the main theme of the site that the link is placed on.

Google penalizes the site that displays the unrelated link since it assumes that the link must be a paid link (which in this case it isn't). Paid links are evil in the eyes of Google.

Anyhow, the moral of the story is to only place links to other websites on your web pages that relate to the theme of your site or web page so that Google won't lower your position on search pages.
