Pushpa Moorjani
Cross-posted on my blog on Ranting and Raving.

This week there was Sindhi art festival at National College, Bandra that was organized by ‘Nu Sindhu Art Academy’. It was the 8th Grand Sindhi Drama Festival.

On Friday, 16th November, there was a play called .Rang Rangeela Pyar Ja”, a lovable socio comedy

On Saturday, 17th November, there was “Changh Mangh 420, a comedy about two comedians

And on Sunday, 18th November, there was a play called Tension-Tension, dhammal comedy.

On Saturday, the Sindhi play was to start at about 7:30 and it was coinciding with ‘Celebrate Bandra’ Carnival Parade and the Inauguration function. I wanted to attend both. I went early to National College to investigate about the play before I could decide which one to attend. there were few people standing outside the theatre, chatting amongst themselves. I didn't want to interupt them. I went back-stage to find out about the program and the entrance. The Asranis were busy giving the final touches to the stage.

I peeped in and said. “Is Niroo in?” A man in late fifty’s came forward.

“Yes? What can I do for you?”

“Oh. I was wondering about this drama, what time will it commence?”

“Come back later, it is too early.”

“I will be interested. I could write about your play in our magazine ‘Beyond Sindh’” I said, just to start a conversation.

“Beyond Sindh? We don’t encourage these things, you know. I am giving you free-pass, but we don’t believe in giving out the invitations like that” he said as he reached inside and came back with an entrance pass.

I was taken by surprise. I had not even asked for a free pass. He glared at me and said “You better show me what you write before you print anything about me.”

“Actually, we have already been featured in this magazine” said his son, as he came forward to show me some Xerox pages of the article featuring ‘The Asranis, (Born to cheer through theatre)’ in the souvenir.

“Oh, You are Asranis?” I was surprised by his rude attitude. I was feeling like a beggar, taking a free pass. Why would I want his approval before publishing anything?

“Er! If I write anything, it will be approved by the editor of my magazine.” I said

“But still, you have to show me what you write about the play” he said as I turned to leave.

Outside, I found one more person selling tickets. “How much is the cost of the ticket?” I asked the man.

“Rupees fifty” he said

“Rupees fifty only?” All this fuss over fifty rupees?

I couldn’t sell my soul for fifty rupees! I took three hundred and sixty degrees turn, walked back to the back-stage and returned the free-pass back to Asranis. I decided to buy a ticket.

Unfortunately, my mood had changed.

The “Celebrate Bandra” inauguration function was more interesting and could be enjoyed with dignity.

It is all aby Generation GAP, Pushpa.

Elder ones are thinkin' that new generation is not listening. And younger ones are thinkin' that senior's are not understanding them.
Well, life offers more experience.

Thank you Vinod and Rajan for taking time to read my post…..

In today’s world, the generation gap is narrowed down quite a lot…the youngsters are more matured now and the senior people are more understanding and are ready to accept the youngsters, but there are some conservatives around who just refuse to change…and that usually spells danger…….

A similar situation could have been handled in different way, if only it could……

Example

I peeped in and said. “Is Niroo in?” A man in late fifty’s came forward.

“Yes? What can I do for you?”

“Oh. I was wondering about this drama, what time will it commence?”

“It will start at around 7:30, can you come in a bit later, we are busy right now?”

“I will be interested. I could write about your play in our magazine ‘Beyond Sindh’” I said, just to start a conversation.

“Beyond Sindh? Oh yes I have heard about it. We did get featured in that magazine once. Are you associated with that magazine?”

“I am, actually I am the Mumbai correspondent for that magazine. Were you covered in our magazine? That’s nice. There have been so many articles already. I might have missed yours.”

He goes and brings the Xerox copies of the article to confirm his presence. “See I have got that published.”

“Oh yes I believe you.”

“Would you like to see this play? There is a ticket of rupees fifty, would you prefer to buy it?”

“Yeah, maybe I might come back later”.

“Okay, we have to organize the set and we are quite busy, I hope you will excuse us.”

“On the second thought, why don’t I offer you a special entrance pass. Please, I would love if you could accept the invitation.”

“Oh no! You have already been featured in our magazine. This time I was thinking of writing a review of your play.”

“But still I insist that you accept our invitation.”

I hold the invitation card proudly and decide not to attend the 'Celebrate Bandra' afterall the festival is going to be there for next 15days and this is just three days..

Next day, I send them a thank-you note and a positive review on their play so that people who had missed it, would make sure that they did not miss it when the play was staged again.

What I mean to say is that ‘Nothing is free….it is only the attitude that matters..

Humility goes the long way…..

No Rajiv, I would never do that! It is unthinkable!

I don't mean to speak ill of the person. It is just my frank opinion on a situational behavior. There is no offense meant for the person concerned. Maybe he was too much stressed. I understand.

Thanks all the same......

Dear Friends,

It is not right, and totally unethical to pass comments on someone without confirming the facts from the second party involved.

I present below the reply I have sent to Ms Pushpa Moorjani. Go through it carefully and learn and analyse the facts yourself.

I have put in 30 years of my life in service of Sindhi language through my theatre group. I would not allow some opportunist like her to harm my well earned reputation for no fault of mine.

God bless you

Pushpa or whoever u r,

I dare to confront and correct you. You r a lier of first order.

# Tell me, if you just wanted to report about our programme, where was the question of u coming and informing me about the same. And if u r inviting me to get involved with it then I have a right to know what is being written about me.

# You claim to be a reporter of a reputed magazine which has already written about us and "U R NOT AWARE OF IT", great,

# As u say u never asked me for a complementry pass so where is the question of me offerign u a free pass.

# The fact is that "U ASKED FOR A FREE PASS AND WANTED TO SHOW ME A LOLLYPOP THAT YOU WILL GIVE US A COVERAGE IN BEYOND SINDH.

# But with due respect I inform u that we do not encourage this business of free passes, as we have been handling people like you for decades, and still looking at ur initiative I gave u a free pass.

# Now u got scared, that God forbid I contact the authorities at Beyond Sindh and informed them about the incidence, they may pull u up for the same, so u thought it fit to return me the free invite and vanish from the scene.

# And last but not the least, the ticket selling counter was right outside the stage entrance, so in all probabilities u must have enquired about the procedure for entrance to the performance from the same person. so if 50 Rs was not a big amount for u, in first place u should have bought a entry card and seen the performance without approaching me or informing me. Secondly, if u were intrested in reporting for our plays, u should have come on inaugural day as well as on other two days also, and thirdly, whatever be the reason, u preffered to go for Bandra Festival leaving behind a programe in your mother tongue. This itself explains ur inclination to ur own language and ur dedication to Beyond Sindh.

# I did not know u before we met on that particular day and I do not wish to remember u in rest of my life, but please do not malign somebody's reputation just for ur ulterior motive.

" VALUE YOUR OWN CULTURE IF YOU WANT IT TO LAST FOREVER "

GOD BLESS YOU

I've to believe him now.
Why we are pulling legs and takin' out clown from the closet?

Dear Mr. Manwani

I m not quarelling if I m making true side of story known 2 people like u, Mr. Rajan, or some Mr. Lulla, b cos u all have passed comments on me without knowing the truth, and it is highly unethical and immoral to do so.

And if u hv read my note carefully, I hv clearly written that I did not know her before I met her on that particular day and I do not wish to know her for rest of my life, so with whome am I quarelling? I would rather concentrate on my services to my mother tongue through culture which I hv been doing for thirty years.

I don't really look for freebees....it was a gesture to get acquinted with you which blew out of propotion...... rest be assured, no body really has the powers to malign anybody reputation..so relax.....Sorry to have upset you with my frankness. please go through both my post to get the gist of what I am trying to say...... I value my culture and am quite proud of it and I have no wish to get into any kind of squabble.

I agree with Niroo, we all passed comments without knowing the other side of the story.

Not that anyone doubts what Pushpa says, however this seems to be a simples of mis-constructed comments being taken tooo seriously by either parties....

would req all concerned to meet, have coffee and make peace..!!

also the comment by our learned brother about Sindhis being quarreling crabs is totally irresponsible, it is because of comments like this, by Sindhis themselves which is the cause of our culture and heritage being slowly eroded. These things happen in all cultures and castes, what is the big deal??
If you dislike being a Sindhi, than maybe you should convert to some other religion or caste instead of self depreciating comments which do no service to our culture at all..!!

I did not mean you Manwani Bhaoo, I meant the 'gentleman' who made this comment..!!
In fact I am glad the comment was brought to the notice of this network...we know what some prominent Sindhis feel about themselves..!!
And please for god's sake don't shut up, request you to kindly continue to give out more nuggets of information...!

We cannot ostracize people from the community just because they make comments on observed facts.

If Sri Harilela, a prominent business tycoon from HK told media, that "Sindhi's are quarrelling crabs" then it is his comment on his observations. Everybody has right to his opinion and there is nothing depreciating in factual expressions.

Why do we lack the power of tolerance, our tolerance to face the truth?

Irresponsibility is of the person who cannot control his ego or anger and his cover up to distort the facts. It is not on the person who is the victim of his emotions, and he has every right to expose it.

Hi Pushpa,
I agree that you cannot ostracize people on the basis of their opinion.
However, washing dirty linen in public is something which is not only, well, dirty, but also does not say a lot about the person indulging in it.
You said "lack...to face the truth" is the above comment a truth..?? or a single person's opinion..??
is it also a "factual expression.." as you put it or an act of irresponsibility by a prominent person who could have very well used the forum to paint a positive picture..??

This thread is becoming a slinging match, it started from somewhere and is going somewhere else....

There is no slinging match…it is only the matter of opinion, which is nothing personal.
