Hey Gang,

I just developed a new blog on writing and posted some business writing tips that I thought would be useful for members looking to improve their business communication skills.

Since this is a new test blog, would appreciate any feedback, leads/referrals, or suggestions for improvement.

Sharif,

Your blog is boring. A couple ideas to punch it up:

  1. Add Subheads
A little formatting goes a long way. You are already using a list, now draw attention to where one ends and the next begins.
  2. Emphasize Key Points
People don't want to read blogs as much as skim them. Because of this, you need to draw attention to important ideas. Make use of formatting options guide your reader's eye.

I hope this helps!

Sharif:

You do need to pump-up this blog quite a bit.

You're using an essay style that's more suitable for a book than a blog.

Blogs are more about opinions and personal experiences than facts. People can get those anywhere.

My advice would be to write in the first person and relate something that really happened to you during your time as a writer. It would make for a much more interesting read.

Also you need lots more content... if you're a writer you need to check out http://QualityContent.net

BTW, how are you going to get traffic?

You'll have a harder time getting it being on a free wordpress host than if you had it on your own domain.

Kurt, Steve,

Thanks so much for these EXCELLENT tips! You're both right, I really DO have to pump-it up a lot.

Originally I just wanted a place I could post my writing portfolio at no cost and wordpress came up as a no-nonsense, no cost solution for uploading my PDF portfolio and also start generating some organic traffic.

I will now be coming up with much shorter news bytes and tips mostly in the first person and will need to start learning the highlighting and formatting features to break up the text.

I think you're on the right track if you make those changes.

I'm a writer and researcher myself and someone that really hepled me out with my own writing is an author I came across one day named Steve Manning.

He's selling a writing course online that covers all the aspects of writing and publishing including things like improving your style. I signed up for the course and it dramtically improved my own writing results by about 1000 percent. He even made me realize that I'm a way better writer than I thought I was. This gave me the confidence to really get going and complete some writing projects I was sitting on. The results have been great and I just can't say enough about it.

To promote his "How To Write A Book In 14 Days" course he gives away Free tips on his email newsletter.

I highly recommend you sign up and check it out because he gives away dozens of great tips that will allow you to make dramatic improvements before you even sign up for the course.

The only thing about Steve is that I think he's an over-zealous marketer. He really believes in what he's teaching and it shows in how he promotes himself relentlessly. His stuff is really great, so is that a bad thing? I don't think so but if you find yourself being overwhelmed, just unsubscribe.

Anyway, give it a shot and good luck!

Oh, forgot to mention that the course is a bit pricey but if you're really serious about your writing, you should consider it as an investment in yourself that could have fantastic financial rewards.

That's how I thought of it and it's paid for itself hundreds of times over not only money-wise but also in terms of the amount I can write, the quality of my writing, my confidence in dealing with publishers and a renewed sense of confidence I have about my own stuff.

It's really revived my writing career and put it back on track after sputtering for a few years..
