Mel Taylor | | I have mixed feelings on one hand if there is a predominance of violence in one breed measures of public safety should be considered. I was bitten by a collie for no reason at all and what about vicious attacks that happen with all sorts of breeds we never hear about? Should a breed be banned?

Ann Rader | | When we look at the facts and apply logic, it’s really certain people who should be banned from having dogs at all. Government beuracrates are not very thoughtful, generally speaking, as anyone who has ever dealt with them will know. Breed bans are simply bureaucratic thinking taken to the max.

Wicked Witch of the West | | I could go into a world of detail on this since it's a good part of what I do, but here are the basics.
Breed bans are not effective in controlling dog attacks, they never have been, they never will. They do nothing more than waste taxpayer dollars trying to enforce and control unnecessary legislation. Most places have current ordinances on the books that if enforced correctly or updated just a bit would cover any dogs within their limits that are dangerous.
There is NO BREED of dog that is more dangerous than another. While some breeds were historically bred for protection, control of predatory animals and hunting, none of them were bred to kill or harm humans. What is, as Ann stated, more dangerous are the type of dog owners. Can a pitbull do more damage with one bite as compared to say a pomeranian, yes. However, there are cases on record of both breeds killing humans.

Gail Nelson | | So true, Marla et al. For people who buy into the "bad breed" myths, here's my favorite reference: Malcolm Gladwell, of "Tipping Point" and "Blink" fame, wrote an insightful, well-researched and convincing article comparing mindless "tagging" of people as terrorists and pit bulls as dangerous.
