Lesson 17 - Moderated Networks
have recently had to place one of my networks under moderation and oh, my..... what an outcry this created!
First of all, what IS a moderated network?
Most networks are not moderated and members can see their post within a couple of minutes. If a network is moderated, the moderator or network leader (NL) must proof the content before airing the post.
The biggest objection that I received from my network members was that of censorship. Moderating is not censorship! It is merely a method for keeping the network on track and 'clean'.
I have had my network for over 3 years and in that 3 years we have seen almost 2000 members. Some have joined and stayed while others have moved on. Sometimes, personalities clash or there is a misinterpretation of meaning and then tempers flare. Recently on my network, this was happening too often and in order to curb language and insults, I felt it safer to place the network under moderation.
Now, I will admit that this is a pain in the proverbial you-know-what, because it means that the poster is sitting there, waiting for me to proof read his/her post and because I am employed elsewhere (read: this is not my full-time job) it can be a few hours before I get to reading through all the posts! Oh, well.............. ?????
I have some pretty strong feeling about censorship and Freedom of Speech, and believe that everyone should have the right to speak their mind AS LONG AS they do so with respect.
So what caused me to switch my network to moderated status? Simple name-calling! Just because a member does not agree with one's point of view does not make them an 'idiot' or any other derogitory term - it just makes them of a different view point.
You know, you can sit there and cuss all you like, but the written word should ALWAYS be respectful!
My advice is to NOT shie away from a network simply because it is moderated. On my moderated network, we have had 14 different topics going simultaneously today, so don't be deterred..... jump in and start networking with others, but always do so respectfully.
My best to you all for a happy and safe 4th of July! :)
