But perhaps the reason is that it can be done online. I was also surprised that AZ is the only state offering this.
One thing that definitely needs to be changed is the voting laws for the primaries. The only reason I stay registered as a Democrat is so I can vote in the primary- and unfortunately it's still limited to ONLY the democrat nominees.
Seriously- how lame is that? I liked New Hampshire's open voting. I bet AZ would look quite different if all could vote in primaries. But then again, that could be the reason the Independents are barred from voting in primaries..

Thousands go online for voter sign-ups
Anne Ryman The Arizona Republic Jan. 9, 2008 12:00 AM Despite computer problems with online registration that frustrated voters, more than 16,000 people registered online in Monday's deadline to vote in Arizona's presidential primary Feb. 5.
If not for the technical problems, it could have been the biggest daily number ever for online registration.
Arizona is the only state in the nation that allows people to register online to vote. The highest number in a single day to register online was the deadline for the general election in 2004, when more than 21,000 registered. Monday's count was 16,573. advertisement
Hundreds of people also showed up at the state Capitol through midnight Monday to turn in registration forms.
One woman drove up at 11:58 p.m., got out of her car with the engine running and dropped off a registration form, said Kevin Tyne, deputy secretary of state.
"It was certainly a successful day," Tyne said. "It could have been the biggest day ever perhaps (without the computer problems). But we are very pleased."
The deadline for registering for the state primary is Aug. 4, and the deadline for the general election is Oct. 6.
Problems with the Web site, www.servicearizona.com, caused the system to go down for hours on Monday and then work intermittently in the evening, leaving many people scrambling to register for the presidential primary. People who tried to register online said the site slowly processed their information, then told them the service was unavailable before they could finish.
State officials said the problems originated with a national driver's license database run by AAMVAnet, which links Arizona's motor-vehicle database with its voter-registration system.
State officials became aware of the problem early Monday morning, said Cydney DeModica, media-relations director for the Arizona Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Division.
The problems left many voters frustrated.
Jack Singer of Ahwatukee spent Monday trying to change his registration from independent to one of the recognized political parties so he can vote. His registration went through at 10 p.m.
Voters must be registered as either a Republican or Democrat to vote in the presidential primary, which determines the candidates that delegates will support in each party's nomination. State law bars independents from voting in the election.
Officials with the Maricopa County Elections Department and the Arizona Secretary of State's Office spent the day advising people on other ways to register.
The Secretary of State's Office already had plans to accept registrations outside the state Capitol until midnight. Voters also were told to print out online registration forms, fill them out and mail them at the nearest post office. As long as the forms were postmarked Monday, they will be accepted, officials said.
