Complicated Women by Mick LaSalle is a fascinating book about fascinating women, Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, Mae West, etc. When LaSalle wrote this book he was teaching a class at University of California at Berkley on Pre-Code film. He is (or was, not sure) also the film critic for the San Francsico Chronicle. Definately recommended reading.
