Please add your comments to this thread on the ways someone can ruin their reputation while networking online.

In essence, what advice could you give to newbies so they can avoid making these mistakes as they build relationships and their credibility using online networks.

[Be nice in tone ... this should be instructional not combative or confrontational.]

==========

Here's a few snippets hopefully everyone'll find useful....distilled down to the basics for simplicity sake. From the aspect of "don't" as originally requested:

* Don't focus on you and your needs...over the person(s)/network and their needs. Business is business...but successful business is relationships. Make a new friend...grow an old friend. Listen and give first, most, and often....humbley receive later. The long term benefits far outweigh any short term gains.

* Don't be all take..and no give. True networking is win-win. Truely successful networking is over deliver and under receive. The reputation you gain with this approach over time will multiply what comes back your way as your credibility and respect grows across the community.

* Don't be who you aren't....be helpful, be honest, be yourself, and have fun. Being who you are attracts those who best connect with "you" and leads to a more rewarding experience all around. Relax and enjoy the experience with "your own face" up front.

* Don't "ask" and not give back. If you are given referals, advice, business, informative replies to your posts, etc. .... give back more than you recieved. This solidifies individual and network relationship(s), enhances your credibility, and grows your reputation. Nothing kills a networking relationship more than someone who takes and gives back little or nothing.

* Don't ignore your strengths....share what you know, experienced, have access to, etc. Posting helpful information and resources for the community's benefit (NOT overt solicitations and "look at me") related to your area of expertise brands you as a trusted and credible resource for that subject...and will bring interested parties your way. If you don't share...no one will know what you can offer. Thus no accumulated credibilty.

* Don't fake it....stick to what you know. Jumping into a "discussion" or relationship alluding to yourself as knowledgable when you're not....will kill any chance for credibility. In fact it will have the opposite affect you'll likely never recover from.

* Don't overlook opportunities to help....you may not have the answer, resources, product/service but you may know who does. Pass that along to who needs it. Unselfishly refering others gets noticed....and you'll find yourself being "refered" the same way.

* Don't attack the messenger....debate the topic. Everyone will not agree on everything. It's best to agree to disagree...and seek mutual education and understanding in that vein. Attacking an individual benefits no one and hurts everyone involved.

* Don't impose your view....no one is/has the perfect "anything". Arrogance, ego, conceit, rigidity have no place in true dialogue and real networking. It's about the community....NOT YOU. Be open and encouraging to divergent views and opinions of others. Ackowledging and even appreciating those who differ from you actually promotes a more healthy networking community.

* Don't violate network policies....whatever the expected ettiquite of the group is conduct yourself accordingly. Spamming, flamming, trolling, etc. should never be in your business tool box. Credibility instantly goes poof for anyone and everyone who brazenly overlooks this common ethic.

How To Properly Advertise On Forums Without Getting Banned

It never ceases to amaze me how many people still don't get how to properly do business on the Internet.

Spam in online forums and networks like HomeBasedBusinessForums.com abounds. It gets sickening to visit sites that are nothing but other people's marketing messages. It just turns forums like this one into nothing but interactive classified ads instead of archives full of truly useful information.

I'm all for advertising because it pays to get the word out about a really good product or service that you use yourself. And being paid to get the word out, just sweetens the pot.

Online forums that contain highly targetted traffic are very tempting for someone to just butt in and make a post about a relevant product or service.

There's just two things wrong with doing it that way. It probably won't work and you'll very likely get yourself banned if the discussion is moderated.

The reason it won't work is your ad is acting as a referral. A referral is usually wasted unless there is some trust built up with the reader of your message first. Pure hard sell advertising messages are not as effective as a referral from a helpful message poster.

The correct way to advertise in discussion forums requires a little more work, but is safe from banning and will garner A LOT more traffic and sales for you.

Here's how I do it:

1. Make yourself a good signature for all your messages. Just about all message forums have a user control panel that allows you to add a signature message to all your message posts. Make up a good one such as:

Best MLM Resources
http://Best-MLM-Resources.blogspot.com

Then anytime you post, your signature will be added to your message. Resist the urge to make this too salesy. The appeal should be subtle but obvious what they will be getting. Notice that the signature references a URL. This is your landing page where you can do all the selling you like. Avoid direct affiliate URLs because it's frowned upon by most forum moderators.

2. Before posting, scan the other messages and questions that are being asked by other members. If you can add a useful comment, suggestion or pose a question just reply and include your signature.

3. If the message is a very relevant and popular message , subscribe to the message so that you will be notified when the message is updated by fellow members. Then reply to the message again. This will push the message up and keep your link in front of more people and for a longer time. I've seen popular discussions get thousands of page views. Remeber to add something to the discussion though....make a beneficial contribution. Anything that doesn't advance the discussion is NOT kosher.

That's all there is to it . Simple, effective and I've never been banned for doing things this way.

Quit trying to make the fast sale. Everyone is suspicious of people trying to just make a quick buck. Try a little useful participation and use a soft sell approach. It works for me and it will work for you.

You know...it never ceases to amaze me. Do the folks that do the "drive by spamming" on networks such as this really think they get any business out it? I can't see how. It appears to me to be a terrible waste of time as in most cases it's a big turn off rather than effective advertising. The reasoning I've heard for this phenomenon is the fact that you have inexperienced marketers involved in network marketing and that is there impression of marketing.

Make it a great day!

Michael, Chris,

Thank you so much for your posts. I couldn't agree more with you guys.

I had an event last week that I wanted to advertise, and I came to the Network on Sat to post since I knew it was the ADV day. What I didn't know was the policy that in order for you to post an ADV you must have contributed twice in the preceding week.

I must tell you, I feel much better not having posted my event here and stay in integrity than to have made possibly a sale or two at $475.00 :)

Harold,

Based on your experience in traditional business, what can you tell us about starting a business (any business in general) that the members of the group can benefit from. I believe one of the most important thing that new people in MLM/NWM need to learn or realize is that they are starting or running a Business. A lot of them don't know how to do either.

I just had an inspiration about something I can do to contribute. As soon as I get it set up, I will be giving away a FREE e-course titled "A to Z of Customer Service" that I had written with the intention of someday marketing as a paid course.

Thanks for your integrity. There is a quick way to fulfill the active member requirement if you realize you haven't done that in a week (and I encourage anyone to do this if you need to fulfill it in order to post an ADV), simply surf the topics and post two meaningful replies before you post your advertisement. Requirement filled.

Make it a great day!

Michael and Chris,

Thank you very much for sharing your views in regards to networking online...It is very disturbing to see many of the spam going on here and in other forums, if people just took the time to actually build relationships, they would be successful in not only their businesses but in their lives as a whole.

The main thing I have learned is that Network Marketing is all about communication and building relationships. With these 2 important points, we create great friendships and the potential of gaining a prospect for your market...

Thanks again, I always look forward to reading your posts:)

I think it is important to note that building the relationships not only helps build our businesses, but it helps us to build 'ourselves' and enhances our lives in general. I have met some absolutely wonderful friends here on Ryze. Those who participate in drive-by spamming miss out on the real benefit of social networking, which is meeting people, learning from their strengths and experiences, sharing and enhancing life.

Thank you to everyone on this network for your meaningful comments and the incredible amounts of useful insights, thoughts and sharing that takes place!

Be consistent. With all the "social networking" going on I'm often surprised by people who "connect" with you and you never hear from them. We all get busy with life and business but don't forget about the contacts you've made. If you're on a networking site send a little note before you request a connection. Drive by spamming is a sure way to guarantee failure. If you're on the receiving end of a request remember you don't have to accept. It's your business and your life.

Don't hijack a thread in a different direction than intended....or simply "chit chat" ("chit chat should be via PM PLEASE). Stick to what the thread originator asked/shared. If they ask about A.... don't talk about B.

I was quite active on another forum until recently .... when I realised that I was spending half my time trawling through the dribble that people write.

I don't mean to sound like a kiljoy .... and I'm up for friendly banter .... but STICK TO THE TOPIC please.

Honestly I'm talking drivel, irrelevant nonsense. I frequent forums with a plan in mind, to help others and to learn and pick the brains of those more experienced than me.

Not to hunt through 30 posts on a topic I'm interested in to find that there was only one post that's relevant.

Does anyone else get this? Or am I just moaning?

The #1 way to botch your credibility .... in my opinion .... is to SPAM the message board and spam the pm.

When I see someone doing this, also known as hijacking, I immediately think they're a newbie or just plain desperate.

How could they possibly think this works?

Also, sending me a pm that is really an advert, clearly out the blue with no warning whatsoever, is the quickest way to get yourself blocked from future pm's.

Michael,
First of all you are just moaning. Someone else may have have an entirely diffenent take on the subject or thread. Remember, yhis is a forum where everyone is allowed to speak their mind and express their thoughts. If you do not want someone to express their thoughts, then you shold add a note to your post that "Comments are Not Welcome." Also I do not believe this has become a dictatorship where everyone walks in lock step and Parrots the Party Line. Just because a person does not agree with you or your vies does not mean that they should not post. I didn;t know that threads were the property of any one person. Hijack? that is laughable.

Never get into an argument about anything, as no-one can win an argument. That doesn't mean one should always agree, but there are ways of stating your point of view without arguing. I have seen many forums where arguments flare up, and people losing their credibility because of the way they answer.

Have a prosperous day :-)

Michael & Other MLM'ers,

So, what does a "spam" response look like? Is it when the sender doesn't address the subject matter and only inserts an ad?

I honestly don't think I've ever "spammed" anyone, in my short career, one-year MLM business. But, want to be sure I understand what exactly spam is....so as not to do it.

Liz,

Pretty much ... replying with no redeeming value or contribution to the thread subject. ESPECIALLY when including promotional or advertising content for your "thing" (biz or product/service).

In short ... stick to the thread topic/subject in your replies ... and add value in your contribution to the discussion of that subject/topic.

An observation: If you go to a Chamber of Commerce networking event, almost everyone you meet will politely and routinely ask you what you "do", and then proceed to hand you their business card. Most of them have no interest in you and are only there to promote their business. We know that when we go in the door and when we're approached at one of these events, we don't call the person a spammer and escort him to the exit.

If I'm out in public and someone hands me a brochure or business card, I don't report it as an assault. Yet in the online world, some people treat unsolicited emails as if they'd received a box of plutonium. (Personally, I just flag it as "junk" and roll on to the next one.)

Now, don't get me wrong: email spam and forum spam can get out of hand like kudzu growing on a fence, clogging networks and diminishing the value of everyone's work. I just wanted to share a different point of view; that accepted behavior in the "real world" can be viewed as something totally different when it makes the jump to the "online world".

Good point Tim, but we must remember those attending the event knew "up-front" what to expect.

If they are offended by someone subtly promoting they should stay home.

The bothersome thing on the Internet is it is fraught with Untrained marketers with little or no selling Expertise, or a desire to learn.

Amazing that those who do focus with a great trainer find the Internet a very easy place to attract a steady stream of eager customers

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of providing honest content with real value.

For example, on another forum I posted a simple question and the next three replies were all ads. Do you think I or anyone else would want to network and build relationships with some one who "spams" their thread with an ad?

You really can build relationships that will last and bring years of value, simply by offering to help people without asking for or expcting anything in return.

The more often you do this, people will begin to see you as a person of integrity and will trust you.

Help at least one person a day and watch your relationships build and grow.

I tend to do more ADS than info but am getting better on that front...I think. Anyway, I also notice the Networks that have become nothing but ADs. I like to just throw misc info around to see if it starts a conversation. "My job sucks" on the Direct Selling Network got some activity and there has been nothing but Ads there for over a month from what I could see.

So what are some ideas for web sites like My space or Face Book? Do you do the "this is me thing" or do you make it look like a business card?

Being too pushy and focusing on sales rather than on cultivating meaningful relationships is the biggest No-No I can think of. Stay away from hype at all cost. Connect with people on a human level. Share info, tips, opinions just as you would if meeting someone new in person. Never beat anyone over the head with your Business Op. Too many make this mistake and ruin it for the good ones. That kind of conduct will cheapen even the most legit of opportunities. So many entrepreneurs are pitching so many things it's impossible to keep track and moreover know who is for real and who's a total scambag. If you brand yourself and a knowledgeable leader people will be attracted to what you have to say and what you could possibly offer them of value. Then you have a great opening to engage an interested person in a conversation about your Business. You'll have a much higher chance of recruiting a new partner in success that way. Relax and have fun!

Jeff-
There has been a great video put out (although it is an advertisement to buy into the "course" they are putting on) about effectively using social networks to expand your circle and in turn imporove your business.

Check it out here...

I thought just these videos had quite a bit of information in and of themselves.

Make it a great day!

Great info. New to Ryze so just a little clarification and food for thought.

Who decides if it was a "drive by spamming" or appropriate info?

If a question is posed in a post and someone posts a link to a product is it appropriate if they don't stand to profit by it but impolite if they do?

Is it okay to have 1 link in your signature but more than 3 is too much?

Actually there are times when driveby spamming has worked.
It's called timing. The right offer, at the right time to the right person. Is it acceptable? Maybe not, but I always find it's better to lead by example rather than ridicule.

And more often than not the reason is not due to desparation but rather excitement over the fire of hope that's been lit in there belly.

Our 2 cents...

Great post and very true.

If you engage in proper conduct your name and business will gain tremendous exposure without you ever having to pitch anyone on anything. This is the essence of ''Attraction Marketing''.

People will be drawn to you and then your business by extension. They will do so because you have proven yourself to be intelligent, personable, and most of all trustworthy.

Honour and integrity are everything in business and in life, so put your best foot forward and treat others as you wish to be treated. This is a recipe for success and you will reap the benefits with time. Success!

Live up to your word, it is Golden.

If you say you are going to do something, do it, no matter how small it may seem. If you say you are going to call someone at 5 p.m., then call them at 5 p.m. If for some reason you cannot have the discussion at that time, have the courtesy to call and reschedule.

If a customer pays you for a product, keep them informed as to the delivery of the product. Don't only acknowledge receipt of the payment, post updates such as ship date and tracking number. If the item cannot be shipped within two business days for whatever reason, notify the customer. There is nothing worse than wondering when, or if, you are going to receive your purchase.

If you are building a team, then those people should mean more to you than a number on your pyramid. Take the time to listen to them and teach them. If not, you will not have them for long, and they will have wasted money not to mention become discouraged and feeling like a failure.

Remember that word of mouth is a powerful thing. It can make or break your business very quickly.

Treat others the way you would like to be treated!

I do have a question---what bothers everyone with what they call spamming....

I do look at almost everything that is sent to me...I just never know what will interest me, otherwise I just delete it. What bothers most people about this???

Another way to "bungle, flop, or botch your crdibility" is to post in a thread with a spam reply like Shiv Rajput just did.

Perfect example of unprofessional, unethical, and STUPID conduct.

Especially with the subject of this thread. How dumb can you get Shiv!!

7 WAYS TO LOSE CUSTOMERS

1) Ignore emails or take too long to respond.
2) Responding to email, but giving no information.
3) Being rude because they were rude to you.
4) Taking too long to send the item a customer ordered.
5) Having a slow downloading hard to navigate website.
6) Using annoying pop up windows
7) Not posting your return policy and not guaranteeing your service or products 100%.

I would add this one, not staying in touch with your downline or if you're building a list, those people might expect to hear from you as well. If your followers start to consider you to be aloof, then maybe network marketing isn't the right choice for you. Try affiliate marketing or sell something off click bank.
