Ash Joie-Lee
I was in Google webmaster tools today for one of my sites and noticed that the words from a text widget in my sidebar was what was coming up in the search engines.
This text is something I change every mojnth and is not what I want to come up in the search engines (although, it is not the worse words to come up)
Since I am using a Wordpress blog, I am unfamiliar with what words are searched and used by the 'spiders'. I guess I could change that text widget to hold different info, but it made me realize I don't know how a situation like mine (using a WP template-where I don't go in a put in meta tags myself) is changed to make sure the right words are used for the search engines.
I was wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction with info on this?

Thanks!

Ash,

Did you self install the Word Press blog yourself? If you did there is a plugin that can add the SEO for each of your post.

If you didn't you can edit your template to add the required meta tags.

When search engine spiders your website whether it is a blog, CMS or any other type of site, it will read any text that is written. This is how the search engines provide ranking for websites. Based on the algorithm the more points you receive the hire your site position or ranking within the search results in your chosen targeted keywords.

So, if you're not using targeted keywords and creating your content around those keywords, the search engines will assume your target for you based on what the search engine spiders or robots have read.

I have a Video Tutorial on this in the Business Learning Center. I think I've offered this to this group the ability to gain free access while I'm building for testimonies. So, if you want to get the definitive tutorial on everything you need to know for doing business online, you might want to consider that offer.

In any case you need to sit down and figure out who your targeted audience is going to be.

Create a list of keywords and add that to your meta tags as well as your text content.

Do not pick keywords that are too broad. For example graphic design, is a broad keyword combination. A lot of people use this keyword, your competition will be large. However, if you need to take those keywords, your added targeted keywords need to support that.

It is best to choose keyword combinations. For instance one of my sites deal directly with Direct Sales Companies. I chose Direct Sales Directory as my main target keyword. There are 422,000 websites with this keyword. My site is not part of the top search engine results yet, however, I'm putting that site in direct competition with a company I've targeted to go up against.

The rest of my targeted keywords (best to have at least 10 of them) will support my chosen main keyword along with my site content. So, getting it in the top 3 page results of the search engines won't be too hard once I relaunch the site again.

This is what I tell everyone including my clients, who comes to me for advice on search engine optimization.

Put yourself in your customers shoes. Think like your potential targeted audience.

What words would you put in the search engine to find your site?

I had a conversation with a wahm last week and asked her why she used a specific keyword combination as her main targeted keyword. When I posed the question to her she said she would use those words to find her products. Unfortunately, the words she'd chosen is not what the typical internet surfer would use to find winter wear.

Ask your friends and family or your network group. What would they use to find your website. It would entail them visiting your site to first get a feel of what you do in order for them to give you and honest opinion. Take the words they've given you and work with those.

Then look at your counter stats and see what words were used to bring visitors to your site. Your counter stats can give you great help in analyzing if your site is targeting the right people based on the results provided.

The beginning steps to creating search engine friendly websites is to figure out your targeted keywords. Build your content around that and then make sure that you've include the keywords you've listed in your meta tags a minimum of one time in your home page.

Your meta tag description should also contain your targeted keywords, in the very beginning of your sentence.

Your targeted keywords should be the first text and the last text that the search engine reads when it spiders your site. This is crucially important on your homepage.

All of your site content should compliment your targeted keywords. For Word Press if you have installed it yourself or have installed it using Fantastico, you can add the seo plugin that will allow you to add keywords for each content you put up.

There is a very long list of what you need to do to create a search engine friendly website. Lots of little techniques, but everything starts with your targeted keywords.

I can honestly tell you that even the professional seo provider won't meet all of the algorithm requirements and no one can put an existing website in the number 1 position of your chosen keyword. They claim to be able to put a site in the number one position, but it won't be the targeted keyword for the site. I've tried, fulfilling all the algorithm required. Even with the programs I have to help me, at the most if you can fulfill at least 75% of what is needed, you'll do pretty well.

You can post any questions related to search engine optimization here if you want. A really great topic one that many fail to understand, but online it is a very crucial step if you plan to make any money online. Especially since about 90% of internet users use a search engine to find the information they are looking for. Before you needed to be in the top 10 page results, now you need to be in the top 3 pages.

Sorry, for being so long winded, but this topic is huge, you have just touched base on the tip of search engine optimization.

The first being...what is the name of the WP SEO plugin?

No Problem!

It's called All in one SEO
Go here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/
You'll see it in the Most Popular category.

The URL I'm sending you to is the Word Press Plugin repository. You'll find a bunch of plugins for word press in there. Be careful though, as some of them may not work well with the new Word Press. Back up your blog first before you start adding plugins.
