Kristin | | I saw the ad for it and I'm not sure I'm going to be able to watch it--the commercial had me in tears. But, I know it's an important show and wanted you to all know. It seems she's going to try and get us all to take some action after the show. Perhaps anyone who does see it can post what action she wants us to do as a group.

P.S. BTW - there are many different versions of puppy mills including my well intentioned neighbors who seem to have a little for sale each year and the neighbor down the street with cute little unneutered doggie that peed all over my house last week ... We can help everyday by getting the word off to them here are a couple key pieces I use:

Pamela Akkerman | | I watched and recorded the show....and yes, there were lots of tears. I lost 2 of my fuzzy children in 2007, so the Fort Worth, TX shelter story was very hard for me to watch but necessary.
I have tried to find the action items that Oprah was requesting on her website but I have had no luck in locating it.
Does anyone know what action Oprah was calling for?
Pam

Ann Rader | | I wasn't able to watch Oprah's program but did receive this from HSUS. It includes a call to action/to do list, which may or may not be exactly what Oprah calls for. It's excellent. Here it is:

Pamela Akkerman | | Thanks for the link, Ann. It was full of information and I have ordered the Proud 2 Adopt package. That is a great marketing product.
I would encourage all to read and get involved in one way or another.
Thanks again! Pam

Ann Rader | | Hi Pamela, I should order the Proud 2 Adopt package too since I am indeed proud to have adopted! Not to mention proud to have rescued stray pets from the street!

Pamela Akkerman | | Ann,
We have always adopted from a MN rescue but now that we have relocated to TX, we have become more active in the Animal Defense League (the only no-kill shelter in the Southwest region).
I have observed something recently that I would like to share. We have been driving more residenial roads to avoid traffic jams on some of the freeways around San Antonio. In driving these back ways, we have noticed a large amount of dogs running free in packs. I had heard about this on the local news but couldn't imagine it. So many dogs are hit by cars and sometimes they are not taken to an emergency clinic but are left on the streets to die. I was horrified with this possibility.
Well, this morning I witnessed 2 separate packs of dogs running free and ripping open trash on the street corners. Mondays are trash days in most neighborhood in the northwest side of town.
My mind wondered some while watching these dogs and I seemed to associate them with groups of teenagers walking down the street. I felt that they were doing things that maybe a lone dog (or teenager) would not have done but in a pack, they did with the safety of the pack.
I am not sure why I was mesmerized by these dogs but I am having a hard time adjusting to this. Why do some parts of society treat their dogs as part of their family and others treat them like a commodity? Is it the way they were raised that makes the difference?
Thanks for listening. Pam

Ann Rader | | Dear Pamela,
Yes, I guess it's family background that plays a big role in whether people love animals and whether they are responsible individuals in general. However, each individual is ultimately responsible for themselves and their actions ...
I've heard about feral dogs living in packs in urban areas just as you describe. It's so sad and at least cats are a more effective predator in an urban situation than a dog can be. Though for both dogs and cats my heart breaks when I think of their very difficult lives as strays.
I have even heard of people who spay/neuter and return the dogs to their environment, just like we do with feral cats.
???? I don't quite know what I think of that in the case of dogs.
Sadly, Ann
